Cavalry Prince

#1 Post by sparkytrypod »

Like many of us on this forum I have been inspired by the Cav prince playstyle.

Here is where I am at the minute, 50 or so points to spare. I think the razor standard on the cav bus makes the characters really choppy.

Interesting list! I'd probably swap out the giant blade on the bsb for something else, unless I'm mistaken the armour bane doesn't stack, I think a lance or great weapon is probably better tbh then take some defensive or utility items instead.

Does the archmage go with the spearmen? Warden of saphery is a nice idea, I hadn't considered it on him but it's so cheap and makes him a handy combatant in a s3 unit like spearmen. Otherwise I'd mount him as spell ranges are so short now. I'd consider annulian crystal or the silver wand instead of lore familiar. Ability to swap out spells is really powerful.

Hi lelthan,

Armour bane is specifically noted in the rule book as cumulative/stacking, so it makes the characters very choppy.

I picked the lore familiar over the wand or crystal as I want walk between worlds, fury of khaine and shield of saphery every game, this guarantees that.

Archmage goes with the swordmasters, not much point having killing blow if you aren't up in the action. 😀

What I should do is give the armour of Caledor to the the archmage and buy regular plate armour and the talisman of Protection for the Prince.

That gives the archmage 4+, 5++, 5+++, and potentially etheral.

However, I would lose the dawnstone on the Prince, hmm, not sure if that is worth it.

Wow I didn't know that about armour bane! Razor standard BSB with reaver bow in big unit of sisters would be very scary! Yeah your ideas sound good, that archmage will surprise a lot of people. Dawnstone is great, but how many models will there be left to hit back, and would they really target the prince over the rank and file?

I think this item selection isn't legal. Armour of Caledor and Dragonhelm are both magical armour, and neither of them is common, so you can only take one of them.

Other points: Give your Archmage a Sword of Hoeth. It comes for free with the Warden honour, and doesn't have a downside. With WS4, S5, AP2, Killing blow attacks, the Archmage can suddenly fight pretty well.

I'm curious if the small SH unit contributes enough or if it could be changed to Reavers, with the extra points used to buff the other SH unit. I guess it's a test and see kind of thing.

Overall I like the list though. It's flexible and seems balanced across the different phases of the game.

Hi Rod,

With regard to the Dragon Helm, the rule for it says it can be worn with other armour. Do you think that excludes magical armour?

Yes, the wizard has the sword of hoeth. It didn't come out in the list formatting.

The idea behind the small Silver Helms is to run down light/chaff units before they get to me. I am trading off movement for survivability.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes. The Can be worn with other armour means that you can take Light Armour or Heavy Armour or Full plate with it, unlike the armour of Caledor for instance, which is full plate armour and thus can't be combined with mundane armour

The SH to hunt chaff makes sense. I'm curious how they'll play out in practice. Let us know.

Ah thank you, I understand now.

This means I will have to shuffle a few items around, but the good news is now the wizard can take the Armour of Caledor!

Sparky this is a great list! It looks like a lot of fun to play. You may find that your helms make a good screen for the swordmasters, too, against shooting lists. More robust than reavers. Against armies that outshoot you that'll be clutch! A lion chariot is a nice unit to slot between the cavalry and elite infantry, too. Noice.

I second Prince's helpful comments above!

Armour on mages. So good.

I'm still umming and aahing on The Giant Blade / Ogre Blade weapons vs great weapons. In the name of investing in defence, I've gone with the latter. I'm keen to see how you get on with the magic blades. Let us know!

Cheers,

Thanks S,

The ogre blade is just so expensive, you have to lose the regen to take it.
I am anticipating alot of tough single characters and monster characters. Therefore, as you used to maxim, the Prince needs to be able to tackle the toughest enemies!
Note: I believe thunderstomp works against amcavalry now too.

You nailed the purpose of the Chariot, a good attacking wing👍
This is my updated list, mostly equipment shiffles, and squeezed in a unit of reavers.
