A new painting blog - OK Army project: Last two Maneaters

#1 Post by MasterOfNone »

I am painting some HE new models (to me, returning to WHFB after about 25 years) and I thought I'd share the progress, together with some recently finished stuff.
I have also been busy painting additional things for my other two armies (O&G's and Dwarfs) and I'll get to those as well, eventually.
Hopefully there will be a steady release of images even when I have nothing newly painted.

I'll start with the most recent, finished yesterday but not based yet:
(new links - hope these work)

and the crew to four RBT's. 2 of them are repurposed from other roles in the High Elf army ;)

For some reason the white balance to the above two images is too cold - the bases are bluish and should be pure white

Hi buddy, as for the images issue. I use imgur and crop the photos down to size in the editing tool. Then you can copy paste the image urls in here.

Thanks, I figured out what I was doing wrong in the first place and have now found out how to use my Google Pictures account.

Some recent Silver Helms, built from scraps of models from different editions (and a few DE bits too!).
The banner is from Gamezone.
Recently painted, still to be based.

I can see the images in this last post. Looking good! I like how you painted your horses. Mine somehow always look terrible and they take a long time somehow. Thanks for sharing. Perhaps the one thing I would change for your models is to give the edge of the base a (neutral) color. Black or brown work best for me. It sort of makes the base edge 'disappear' when looking at the model.

When I undercoated the miniatures only, the base remained black and I left it like that. I agree that the way they are does not look good.
I have been lazy and should paint them some drab, dark colour for the reason you mentioned.

I'll give you some Swordmasters:

I just got my hands on a new Island of Blood box and are painting another 10 swordmasters, the Sea Guard and the archmage.
I will sell off the skaven, and perhaps the prince on griffon (I already have metal mounted Eltharion waiting in the painting queue).

I had another look from the top of the thread - bright and tidy, just right for HE colours, in my view. :)

Real moss on the bases? Looks good too.

An intact IoB box set must have set you back. You could probably recoup most of it from selling those skaven, though!

Yep. Plus it's super cheap ;)

That was my reasoning for the substantial outlay.

A couple of eagles.
I am not too happy with the paintwork I achieved here, but with so many miniatures I have to do, these will have to do.

To finish off, my hero on eagle. It was converted and painted about 25 years ago, so really, not a recent piece of work....

Very nicely done on the replacement stands. I'm not sure how I feel about the beheading of Jess Goodwin goodness, but since you did it back then and it looks fine so it's ok haha.

Back then it made sense and it was not a special piece in any way.
I still have lots of miniatures from the late 80's early 90's that now are probably collectable.

This one is a weird one.
I bought 4 knights of Dol Amroth thinking they would serve well as Silver Helms and indeed they don't look bad. I thought they could be made into a unit of 5 as shown.
However they are really tiny compared to the other miniatures, even compared to the bunch of Silver Helms from the 80's that I have. For this reason I have not completed the switch to 25x50 bases.
Maybe I should put them up for sale?

In general LotR models are much smaller (although The Dark Sheep’s fantastic converted spearelves are actually slightly taller than the ‘official’ models), but they’d probably look fine as long as you make a unit exclusively of those models.

They are indeed some fantastic conversions. Difficult to make a large number of them though.
Going back to my Dol Amroth knights, it could work only if I got a fifth off eBay, the silver helm making up the current fifth does not fit in.
Still undecided... with a decent base I could probably sell them at a decent price and "reinvest" the profit in something else.

Nice! Great model.

I always wish HE chariots were better so it would make more sense to include them in my army list. I haven't really managed to get them to work for me, but maybe it's a case of bring a lot or don't bring any.

What kind of army lists do you have in mind?

Thanks Rod.
About the army list, it's a bit academic since I have no opportunity to play right now... although I could play against myself ( HE vs O&G or Dwarfs).
I read how some army lists evolved in a few of the glorious blogs pre-End of Times (Seredain, Curu Olannon, Swordmaster to name the longest running ones).
They were fascinating, quite inspiring. I have a couple of lists on my spreadsheet that draw from those blogs:

Army #1

14 archers, musician 150
14 archers, musician 150
13 Silver Helms, shields, full command 329
Tot core 629
6 Dragon Princes, champion, banner of Eternal Flame 204
20 Swordmasters full command, BoTWD 340
Tot special 544
2 RBT 140
Frostheart phoenix 240
1 Eagle 50
Tot rare 430
Mounted prince, heavy armour, shield, barded steed, Giant Blade, Dragon helm, Dawnstone 271
Lvl 4 Wizard Book of Hoeth, Ironcurse Icon, Amulet of Endurance 310
Total Lords 581
BSB dragon armour, barded steed, OTS, Enchanted shield, sword of might Golden crown 170
Lvl 2 wizard dispel scroll 145
Total Heroes 315
GRAND TOTAL 2499

Army #2 Similar to 1 without Phoenix

24 archers, musician 250
5 Silver Helms, shields 115
11 Silver Helms, shields, full command 283
Tot core 648
6 Dragon Princes, champion, banner of Eternal Flame 204
20 Swordmasters full command, BoTWD 340
Tot special 544
3 RBT 140
6 Sisters of Avelorn 84
2 Eagles 100
Tot rare 394
Mounted prince, heavy armour, shield, barded steed, Ogre Blade, Dragon helm, Dawnstone, Potion of Fooldhardiness 276
Lvl 4 Wizard Book of Hoeth, Ironcurse Icon, Amulet of Endurance 310
Total Lords 586
BSB dragon armour, barded steed, OTS, Enchanted shield, sword of might Golden crown 170
Lvl 2 wizard dispel scroll 145
Total Heroes 315
GRAND TOTAL 2487

Army #3
24 Spearelves, musician 226
5 Silver Helms, shields, musician 125
11 Silver Helms, shields, full command 283
Tot core 634
5 Dragon Princes, champion, banner of Eternal Flame 175
20 Swordmasters full command, 290
Tot special 465
3 RBT 210
Frostheart phoenix 240
1 Eagle 50
Tot rare 500
Mounted prince, heavy armour, shield, barded steed, Giant Blade, Dragon helm, Dawnstone, 271
Lvl 4 Wizard Book of Hoeth, Ironcurse Icon, Amulet of Endurance 310
Total Lords 581
BSB dragon armour, barded steed, OTS, Enchanted shield, sword of might Golden crown 170
Lvl 2 wizard dispel scroll 145
Total Heroes 315
GRAND TOTAL 2495

There is some tweaking possible. All these armies are quite similar, based on SM and Helms, what varies is Phoenix yes/no.
I am curious about other builds too, perhaps with less cavalry and some WL's, or maybe with more flyers (I can have up to 3 eagles + a hero on eagle, phoenix and dragon). Also using a Loremaster instead of a Lvl 4 sounds interesting, either of them would probably go with the Swordmasters. It's difficult to say without having played any of them

I love your eagle rider. I can appreciate Shannar's point of view but my High Elf army is of those models and is about 75% converted.
