Rob Lane's High Elves

#1 Post by Ielthan »

Hey guys, I've been looking for years for photos of Rob Lane's seaguard army from the back end of 5th edition and the beginning of 6th. His all conquering all cav army from 6th is pretty well documented and the photos are on CMON, and I've managed to find a page on the seaguard army using the wayback machine but I can't find photos. I have this distant memory of seeing it on the old GW website years and years ago and loving it, really want to find some pictures. It was called "Lord Alassar's Revenge" if that helps, would really appreciate it if anyone could help, thanks!

I saw this in the flesh, really nice.

Me too. He ran the LSG army before the 6th Edition HE book didn’t he? I remember him being severely unimpressed with the loss of second rank shooting in there!

Your cav army photo is not showing up for me. Oh and I’ll PM you.

Did it work this time?

Thanks for the PM man :)

Oh cool that must have been great! Were you in the tourney scene back then? I heard he sold it years ago, so I'm guessing it's still in circulation somewhere. Yeah I think he ran it using the ravening hordes list, maybe the back end of 5th too I'm not sure. Losing the 2nd rank of shooting really sucked...was a strange decision as it was hardly op.

The 2nd rank of shooting wasn't really OP, but High Elves in 5th edition were (severely) so when they moved to 6th they just took every thing away.

You’re welcome.

My first Warhammer tournament was the 2001 Pompey Pillage which was won by this army. My first game (8-12 loss to VC’s!) was vs a clubmate of Rob Lane’s, he was playing next to us.

The Ravening Hordes 2 list was interesting. I guess it still had double-rank shooting for the LSG and it must have been the official list for several months. I used the equivalent Wood Elf list for a year or two until they updated it in White Dwarf. I was not pleased to see my converted chariot become illegal!

What is the story behind Rob Lane's seaguard army? Is it a tournament army or a more lore oriented one? I've tried searching for any info, but didn't really find anything.

It would be nice to find any info as I'm shaping my own maritime list.

He was an extremely successful tournament player so arguably that came first Bie. But he was also obviously a fine painter and each of his armies had a backstory, the units and characters all had identities.

If you can get hold of White Dwarf 287, that has a report where he uses most of the army with lots of pics and an army list with the names etc.. I have it so could help out with pics etc. if you can’t find a copy.

I've had a look online, but can't seem to find any source for pictures or download. Can you send me a couple of pics of the report SpellArcher?

I’ll try to get some off, though the quality may not be fantastic Bie. I’ll see what I can do.

US or UK 287? I just had a quick scroll though the UK one and didn't see anything (but maybe I missed it, or maybe my file isn't complete)

One of his Sea Guard units can be found here:

Btw if I remember correctly Rob Lane also run the Sea Guard list during 6th Ravening Hordes (before the 6th HE book was released), and left it later since HE lost their Shoot in Two Ranks special rule :(

Edit: I have just realized that all these things have already been mentioned, sorry #-o #-o

It’s the thought that counts guys!

:)

Please see PM Bie.

I believe the tournament list had three units of LSG and 2 x 10 Archers. Somewhere between 2 and 4 RBT. A Silver Helm unit run in three ranks of four, maybe some other stuff.

Thanks for the replies,

That army looks realy nice. In the report he is fielding spearmen, but using Sea Guard miniatures. Seems like he is taking the same approach to the Sea Guard themed list as I am: all characters are on foot and no heavy cavalry (and in his case infantry for that matter)

In the report he was specifically trying to represent a force defending a town in the coast from a Druchii raiding party, so he chose units he thought would be available in that situation :)

Thanks for that. It actually lets you click throught o his CMON profile from there: http://www.coolminiornot.com/artist/Rob+Lane. He doesn't have a lot of pictures on there, but there's a couple more HE and other assorted minis.
