RBT vs lance formation, how do u fire yours?
hey all, found a new player to our store on the weekend with brettonia, i happened to play with him against DE and im glad i did so because i didnt realise how cheap their knights were and how many u can see on a table in 1k pts. (we had 1k each vs a 2k DE force)
so to my question....single shot or multi shot vs lance formation???
now normally other armies have calvary in a single line so that single shot can only kill the one unless from the flank...BUT with lance formations they have 3 able to kill on a 2,2,3 and ignoring their 2+AS altogether wheras the multi is wouding on 3's but they still have 50% chance to survive with a 4+AS still
i realise hitting on a 3 for my single shot i kinda risky too but hell i like a good game changing gamble now and again lol and believe me one RBT ended up drawing a game for me it was amazing but thats a totally different topic lol
im leaning into chancing single shots but how about you out there?
just wondering opinions cos i pretty much always take 1 RBT even at 1k pts
thanks for reading

I haven't played at this level, but what you want is to force cavalry to expose their flanks for either a single shot, or a pre-emptive charge. A lance with a depth of at least three ranks qualifies for a shot either on the flanks or in front. Ideally you want as many shots as possible, so you'll have to sacrifice at least one unit to march block him, and keep your forces at least 33" away from his.
Another way is to force him to manoeuvre around some obstacle, preferably a wood with a unit (WLs or SWs); even a lance with two ranks is a worthwhile target for a single shot, because at the end of the day, your objective is not to destroy the Lances but decimate them sufficiently that your elite troops can deal with them, preferably denying them the charge.
At a little magic backup won't go amiss, that will either deal direct damage, or Curse them with being attractive to airborne sharp objects.

The advantage of multi-shot is that he gets a 6+ Ward rather than 5+ as the shot is under S5.

Re: RBT vs lance formation, how do u fire yours?
Here is some maths
2/3 to hit times 5/6 chance to wound then 5/6 chance to wound again, then 2/3... multiply those out 100/324 ~ 30% chance to do 3 wounds with no AS, but since they have a 5+ ward, you are looking at 2 wounds on average with a single shot.
2/3 to hit with 6 shots is 4 hits. wound on 3's, 2.66 wounds... after armor its 1.33 after ward its 1.10
So yes its better to shoot with the single shot, just like you would if your RBT sees right down a cavalry flank. I only did the maths because Brettonians have a 5+ ward vs the single shot and a 6+ ward vs the 6 shots.
Curse of Arrow Attraction supporting the multiple shots gives you 1.48 wounds after saves and provides a 41% chance of doing 2 wounds.
Its a toss up in my opinion. The single shot seems better on average, but my probability is flaw because once you fail a roll, its done. So If you miss, 0 wounds, if you fail to wound, 0 wounds, if the first knight pass his 5+ save, 0 wounds. Single shot is riskier, and its max potential of wounds is 3 if its a 3x3 big knight bus. Multi has a higher potential, 6 wounds, and is more consistent and reliable.

Wow... All that hurt my head
I'd go with single shot because you could end up with a Knight-Kebab...
Its pretty funny to rub their nose in that!

It's the Schrodinger's Cat of rules. Until the FAQ, the interpretation can be inferred as both true and false correctly

If the first rank stops the single bolt with its ward save, the bolt stops completely.

The only reason to fire singles into 2+ save knights is in the flank when you need to do 4-5 wounds in one round, toherwise burn off the multi's.

Yeah, knowing Bretonnians and their Lady Luck, I would recommend against the single shot up the front strategy. Multi shot is much less riskier and, on average, more likely to get you more kills.
Some old has-been.

repeater, almost always, unless perhaps theres a good chance to randomize on a character and I want a chance to skewer him.
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.
And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"
