A little tournament

#1 Post by Botjer »

So we had a tournament at the club this weekend.

I fielded.

1 Seawarden with pennant, fearless bubble skill, and charm that gives enemies -1 to hit him for 1 turn.

40 spearmen
5 silverhelms
20 archers
2 great eagles
1 RBT

1st game, the prize, both were deploying in the centre, 1" from each other. Twist: lashing rain, -1 to hit with ranged weapons, -1 to run and charge.

Opponent skaven.

Skaven warlord with fearless bubble
40 clanrats
40 clanrats
2 mortars
1 hellpit abomination
1 doomwheel

Game was bloody as hell, cramped fighting from turn 1. I lost because i couldn't find a good way to use eagles and silverhelms.

Game number 2
Enemy was brettonia
1 damsel with fearless bubble
40+something peasants with halberds
20 bowmen
8 knights dont know what kind
5 yeomen

Objective controlling 4 objectives on the table receiveing points at the end of your own turn.

Peasants and spearmen just ended up standing within charge range from each other.

Eagles silverhelms clashed on one flank, losing the flank i withdrew 1 eagle and sent it after the objective his bowmen had held.

In the end, victory to me.

Game number 3
Enemy: chaos warriors
1 chaoslord on steed.
10 man warrior squad
10 man warrior squad
5 man knights
chariot
chimera

objective, the prize again.
In a city.

He had first turn, moved up, took the prize.
And sent his chimera into my spearmen.

there was a twist giving all melee weapons +1 attack.

In my turn the spearmen totally wrecked the chimera.

And I had a plan, I focussed everything on the chaos warriors holding the prize. reducing them to 1 before charging with both eagles.

They just barely managed to kill him, I took the prize and swooped away. Not far enough though, the chariot caught the eagle in the midst of my lines after some offroad mountainclimbing (it was a kid and i didnt want to start a discussion about what a chariot can reasonably travers :P )

He charged with everything smashing my spearmen who held on thanks to fearless.

My silverhelms moved in from the flank and actually did some damage.

In the end i rolled an enormous amount of 5+ like it was 2+ and that carried the day.

Another victory to me.

Game number 4

Enemy Sylvaneth
Spirit of Durthu
treelord
20 dryads
20 dryads
1 some caster dryad
3 forests

Turn 1 opponent rolled a 6 on both the Treelord and the spirit of Durthu.

They went to town on my spearmen.

I attacked back, doing a total of 5 wounds... and shook hands, understanding i didnt have enough Rend in my army to dent his trees.

Game number 5

Beastmen
some warlord
ghorgon
20 gors
20 gors
40 ungor raiders
pig-thingy
10 dogs

Objective: burn and plunder 3 objectives on the opponents side.

My opponent tried to be sneaky, so set up in a corner while i set up in the middle with a standard (spearmen-archer-artillery formation).

But quickly he realised that I could just stand the and shoot at him... so he now had to move from the corner to the table, delaying himself... and giving me the victory.

I did alot of shennanigans with my eagles and silver helms in this battle. Stopping him from outflanking my army, not fighting his gorgon... swooping in behind his army to burn his objectives... felt for the guy, bit it let me try alot of things with my army.

I had forced myself to only use units from the High elf compendium.

And when everything was counted up I ended up in third place.

This seems popular, is it a good pick for most armies Botjer?

I take it this handicapped you somewhat?

Well played! Game 4 sounded a bit rough but otherwise it looked like good tactics paid off.

Congrats on reaching third place. It reads like a fun tournament :) with some pretty diverse armies in there.

I think your army is a nice combination of combat and ranged damage. Did you miss not having any magic in your list?

I liked reading how your spearmen managed to take out a chimera. It's always nice to see them perform.

Also, this:

for me, this is the essence of the game in the end. It's taking your opponent into consideration and aiming to both have a good time. How you achieve that is different vs a kid then vs an adult. But this for me is the whole point of the game :) So kudos to you.

Any chance for some pictures of the event?

If you have an army with lots of individual soldiers it is a must, boringly much so.
But if you have an army with msu or just units with few models then it is not as important, see it as a sliding scale.

Yes, the army has a real problem with high save units like the treelords, they had 3+ with rerolls on 1's. I had a hard time even scratching them.
Silver helms are sub-par. They are more of a speedbump than a cavalry unit.

Well I could have played better, probably could tweak the army better.

Yes I would have loved some magic, but at 100 points for a mage its really expensive at 1000. Also we didnt use the malign sorcery book.

About the spearmen, I really like in this edition how basic troops, our archers and spearmen can actually do something(unless two treelords teleport into them....)

Many of the large monsters have quite bad saves, it makes the game alot more fun.

My mobile phones camera is damaged, but ill see if i can put up some of other guys photos.

These are obviously take by the bretonnia player :P

You can see my spearmen on the third pic, havnt finished the shields yet.

And yes we multibase(larger bases with more minis) stuff to speed up gameplay.

Thanks for the pictures. The battlefields look epic. A great selection of terrain on there. It reminds me that I really need to get the terrain I have lying around painted :)
