Wamphyri101's Squiggy Stardust and the Shroooms

#1 Post by wamphyri101 »

So...I might have picked up a load of Gloomspite gitz to create a Squig army for local gaming.

DOK will stay my tournament army, and LRL my high elves from the past. But I wanted something fun and amusing to play vs newer players/non hardcore tournament players.

Pics to come...

Yeah! Bring it on! I'd love to see a squig army. It would look epic. And I think it will be a fun / casual army to play with. Looking forward to those pics. :)

Wow, that looks impressive already. It should be an epic (and fun!) army. And the bad moon shrine looks fun and characterful. Please share your progress on this army :)

I do have to ask. Why is one model yellow?

So some where half assed base sprayed, not sure why the person I got half the army off did that. The yellow one is its from the Underworlds game (Zarbags something or other)

Basically for some reason GW did the underworlds models in different colour plastics. They seem to be doing that more and more now (like stormcast stuff is gold plastic)

So had my 1st game on Saturday and I actually won! Did not expect to.

Was vs Night Haunt and we played focal points

He was running night haunt, so my rend did nothing

Emerald Host
Tomb Banshee, Soulcage, Midnight tome

Lady Olynder, Shademist

Guardian of Souls, Lightshard of the harvest moon, Spectral tether

Knight of Shrouds, lord of the host, the traitor knights blade

Spirit of torment

10 Hexwraiths

5 Hexwraitgs

20 ChainRasps horde

Shrieker host

The sorrowmourn choir

3 x 5 Dreadscythe Harridans

4 x 4 Myrmourn Banshees

Image

Image

Image

Image

Basically I went 1st, threw myself forwards to cap obj early (took both left, center and bottom right) I also had 2 monsters within 6 of 2 obj so I capped 8pts. I got Squig lure off...but forgot it was D3 units (READ THE RULES DALE) and just had it on the solo mangler. I threw him forwards and he bounced really, the nighhaunt etheral just soaked it up.

We went next and got the double. He got in deep behind me and had both my shamens in combat (and pretty much dead) and surrounded the mangler while engaging some other units. He got a spell off on the mangler that makes it fight at the end (soul cage?) and that meant even with spending a CP to allow it to fight as if full wounds, he took it down before I could attack. Luckily, he only actually managed to cap 2VP's as he didnt have enough to push me off the objs.

This meant in my turn I managed to throw 10 bounders into his 10 Hexwraiths and Lady Olynder, and them position the 2nd Squig heard into a position to invade the right flank. Combat saw the bounders did some good damage on the hexwraiths and got some hits in on the Lady (she has a 2+ shrug to another unit). Main thing was he attacked back with the hexwraiths 1st, and not his 2 units on the right which were not in with the squigs due to a big charge. This meant the squigs wiped those units out, giving me another flank. the Loonboss on Mangler got mental and rolled 5,6,6 for damage with his maw and wiped out the chainrasps.

This meant I got another 7vps, putting me on 15 vs 3, then I got the double.

This meant the loonboss joined the bottom combat and then the squig herd assault the top. Pretty much left my Loonboss on 2W but only his Banshee was left on the table (5 returned Bounders got a high charge into one of his heroes also and killed him off)

So fun game. Squigs reeeaaallly dont like being charged, so I need to work on my screening with the herds to protect the bounders. And remember to read my rules lol

Man, that reads like one wild battle. It's sort of what I expected from this army, except that it dealt way more damage than I thought it would. Well done on the win!

And yes, knowing the rules helps ;) Though you can be forgiven, since it's your first match with them.

Game 2 of my Gitz!

I played shifting obj vs Cities:

Hammerhal:
Freeguild General on Griffon, twinstones

Freeguild general, general, acadamae prodigy

Freeguild general

Calestial Hurricanium with Celestial Battlemage, Wings of fire

Knight incantor, adjutant, twin tailed comet

3 demigryphs
5 outriders
10 shadow warriors
10 shadow warriors
30 Hand gunners
10 hand gunners
10 hand gunners
10 freeguild guard with halberds

(Writing this up I just noticed he didnt deploy the outriders lol. Poor dude. Sent him a message)

Image

Start of round 1 combat....
Image

End of round 1 combat....
Image

Image

So it was a very very tight game.

Main mistakes I made was:

1: forgetting the 4+ on fungoid turn 1 for CP
2: forgetting...this is bad...to add the 1d6 for my run rolls....which I had 3 units with squig lure...ffs lol so only squigs hit combat and not the mangler support.
3: forgot boingrots mw ability on charge...twice...

Duh...I will strive to be better next game!

He got the double turn 1 and I got the double turn 3.

Was a fun time and ended 22 vs 21 to gitz. Nothing hugely tactical lol.

Looks like a fun battle. The pictures leave me wondering if your opponent made a smart move in splitting up his forces. It looks like you managed to engage with his left flank first with your full force. Which should have given you an upper hand there. Though that could just be me favouring tight deployments.

Mistakes always happen. It's only your second battle with this army (I think). An with all the rules floating around you're bound to forget some. A good thing you recognized them. Which helps avoid them for future battles.

Where are the barricades from? They look interesting (and useful).

Yeah I woulda had the Griffon and Cav ready to counter charge not head to the middle.

The scenery is from the Game of thrones miniatures games. Was at my friends so using his stuff (kinda wish I had bought some scenery with me lol, next time)

And yeah, learning curve. will get it down lol

Also, on a completely unrelated (and not even gaming related) note, it looks like you're having great weather. All I've seen this year is rain and I don't think we've had temperatures over 15 degrees yet. The joy of the Netherlands I guess...

Sorry your weather has been bad!

Ours has been a mix of warm clear/cloudy days and rain. This week its rained all week but then Sat-Wed should be nice.

We are going to try and do a 1 day 3 game outside event in June since our groups had 1st shots now so we are aiming for 8-10 people I think. Cant wait!

With a little rain added in after turn 1 lol

He ran:
Hammerhal:

Freeguild General on Griffon, Aemour of Mallus

Freeguild general, general, acadamae prodigy

Freeguild general, acadamae prodigy

Knight incantor, adjutant, twin tailed comet

3 demigryphs
10 shadow warriors
10 shadow warriors
20 Hand gunners
20 hand gunners
10 hand gunners
10 Hand gunners
10 freeguild guard with halberds
10 freeguild guard with halberds
20 Crossbowmen

Turn 1 went alright for me, I got some great charges in but my Mangaler bounced on his attacks meaning the generals were wasted clearing the rest of the chaff. I also should have used a CP to keep the squigs around chose to lose the roll to do MW on a 4+ (which I got 2 out of 7...waste of bodies lol)

As the game went on and I failed to bring units back turn 1 and 2 he whittled me down enough that on turn 4 we were on even points and it went to priorety. He rolled a 5 and I rolled a 1...so he got the double and I would have been able to get the points back from what he got that round (If i went 1st I could do enough damage and bring a unit back to cap an obj for extra points)

I was happy enough as the obj shifted in his favour 4/5 turns

Points were:

7-0
13-7
16-11
17-17
21-25

I blame the fact I had to put Jareth in a box to stop him getting wet

It looks like an interesting battle with a lot of back and forth. I get the impression that his right flank was stronger than his left. And that the battle shifted when he got that flank involved in the fight.

I also like the water-effect you managed on your objective markers. Looks very natural... ;) The goblins are crying out for some paint on them though ;)

Game 5 vs Blades of Khorne
Not sure what his full list was, but he had 3 battalions also.
Roughly
Daemon prince
2 Slaughter priests
2 Blood secretors
3 x10 Blood reavers
3 x 5 Blood Warriors
10 Skull reapers
hex skulls
Bleeding Icon
Skull altar
Gore Pilgrims
maybe dark feast?

We used some of the new rules also with some deployment edits for smaller board:

Image

Image

So we both had 3 drops, so I made him go 1st as he had no shooting/magic in range. I only got to move 1 unit with my battalion so I moved up my right unit of Squigs

He ran down the middle, surprisingly not surrounding his shrine or trying to tag the side obj. I think he wanted to throw overwhelming force in my face. He tagged 4pts

My turn I failed to cast hand of gork and got 1 unit with Squiglure which I put on 10 boingrots.

I moved up with my force, using the hoppers to grab the left obj and my squigs to tag the right while still being able to hit combat.

Lots got in (both manglers, both squigs, 10 boingrots) and a lot of damage was done, inc the right mangler destroying his alter on the 3+

I capped 8vps

Obj moved to the left with the moon hitting the same area

He got turn 2, so got more stuff into combat and that turn was pretty brutal, losing the Loonboss on Mangler and half the boingrots but manageing to do some more back with the squigs and other mangler. He only got the center obj so got 2pts. He has also summoned 5 blood letters on the right that did nothing all game lol

In my turn, he used his blood tithe points to charge his skullreapers into my squighoppers to try and steal the point.

I threw my boingrots left into them (5) with the other unit of 10 going for his last big unit with priest/secretor

Secrator died from boingrots impact hits, and over the turn I wiped out most his army bar 1 skullreaper, a prist and I think that was it.

He called the game there as it was now 16vs6. He wont priority but there wasnt anything he could really do

He made a number of bad combat selections, choosing units that didnt need to fight yet which meant he lost ones that could actually have saved them being killed

Man, your army is a collection of bouncing madness... I love it :D

With the pure combat focus of his list I would have expected more from it in combat. Maybe that was what he was thinking as well, which made him a bit too reckless with his troops. Of course, you impact hits helped as well here and there.

I kinda feel sorry for Blades of Khorne. They need a rewrite or something.

Their summoning is lame vs Slaanesh/Tzeentch
They dont have really any rend
They can throw out a good number of attacks, but tbh not as many as they should being worshipers of combat

They are just "meh"

So 3.0 and Gitz is not the greatest mix. They got hit hard by a number of rules changes that made them competitive. Main ones are:

Stacking of -1 to hit
losing battalion abilities like +1D on charge for jaws of mork
losing additional bravery per 10 models in a unit

So thats fine, only the middle effected me. Rumours are a new book this year so happy to wait while I paint the army (which I have started!) maybe doomdivers will come back as they are iconic

For now I have printed a large "Gobbla" from Wfb to be my Squignos (using kragnos rules) and am adding green stuff to repair atm.

I played my 1st game with him vs my 1st game against Kharadron Overlords

He was running:
Barak Zilfin
Triumph (Inspired)
Endrinmaster in dirigible suit (General) Grudgebearer, Phosphorite Bomlets
Endrinmaster in dirigible suit
Aether Khemist, Staff of Ocular
Aether kehmist
Aetheric Navigator
10 Arkonaught company
3 Endrinriggers
5 Thunderers
Gunhauler (Torpedoes)
Frigate
Ironclad
Warlord, Hunters of the Hinterland

Image

Image

Image

Image

I went 1st, knowing I would probably get shot off so needed to glad the objectives as soon as possible as KO wouldnt have the numbers to grab any early. I chose to run 3 units together and sped in capping the 3 points and earning 6vp

His turn he flew his armada to my right flank and targeted my right squigs for the battle tactic. For some reason he didnt go after Kragnos, which I was fine with. I redeployed my right Boingrots to help keep the point if he tried to charge and steal it. He killed all but 2 Squigs, but his gunhauler torpedoes failed when he charged, and it meant he failed his tactic, and also didnt steal the point, so got 0vp

He got the double, and took it, pushing my right flank in. He stole the right obj and targetted my general for the battle tactic and shot him off, as well as the rest of the boingrots on the right and most of the unit on the middle also. For some reason he charged his ironclad and gunhauler into my loonshrine (hiding my 2 fungoids) and remaining boingrots and middle squigs. He did some wounds to the fungoids and killed the squigs, but failed to kill the last 2 boingrots, because I had piled them in to they were 3" in the ironclad but out of reach of its weapons. He capped 4vps

In my 2 it now meant I could charge Squignos into the ironclad and due to the boingrots he couldnt stand and shoot. This meant a very dead ironclad just from his 1st set of attacks with all out attack on...ouch he hits hard.

End of my turn I got 5 boingrots back and they sat to threaten his right units. I capped 5vps

He won round 3, and moved his right flank to engage kragnos at range and use his bomlets to kill/really hurt Kragnos (you shoot in 6" and take a MW on a 2+ and keep rolling until you fail...) However...I redepolyed out of 6 inches so he couldnt do this, and with all out defense Kragnos only took 5 wounds total and failed to steal the middle obj as Kragnos is a monster and worth 5 bodies for objectives, so ended up with just the 1vp again

This meant my turn 3 I squig lured my left flank squigs into this frigate, charged kragnos into his general and endrinmaster (I took slay the general for my battletactics) and the 5 boingrots into his arkanaughts. Squigs and boingrots fluffed, only doing a few wounds to his units, but Kragnos took off both heroes. I scored 5vps

I then won turn 4 roll off, and he conceeded. Kragnos would now charge the frigate without being shot and would take it off, or just finish off his right flank. I was well ahead on VPs at this point and his list was out of steam

So all in all it was good. Kragnos is baller and I need to find a way of getting lifeswarm into the list lol. I might drop the cauldron, as though it is good I works better in a list with more bodies to do fun stuff with and I cannot garrison in the shrine and still use its power. Cogs is probably worth keeping for 45pts as means they can cast mystic shield on Kragnos as well as their normal spells/lifeswarm

Kragnos is baller vs non mortal wounds. He has a ton of attacks that work well with all out attack as he wounds wounds on 2+ anyway

Should have hid my general as losing him turn 2 meant losing his ability that lets me roll twice for bringing units back

He is weak to mortal wounds and if you screen him as hes a big ass base (130mm) and doesnt fly

But otherwise yet he is

I love the psychedelic paint scheme you have going on with your squigs. It suits them :) and it really adds to their mad bouncy look.

Sounds interesting. Printed as in using a 3D printer? I'd love to know more since I think 3D printing will end up being the future of wargaming
