FAQ: compilation of observed organized-play rulings

#1 Post by Eirik »

This thread was inspired by Lordy's topic.
This is a list of FAQs about our Army Book and their rulings in organized/tournament play. The point is not to answer rules questions definitively, but instead to show how tournaments and organizations are approaching the rules. Everything is cited, no original reasoning or speculation.

The questions are listed below. Please post any information regarding how a tournament/organization handles a specific question. Feel free to post your disagreements about which events 'count'.
Generally bigger Tournies and well known players are likely to be taken at their word, but anyone can post. The list will be maintained by me. Feel free to list questions I have missed.

I will also post FAQs with clear/obvious RAW answers for reference.

Post:
-Your experience at organized events (playing or planning or watching) regarding how the listed rules were handled
-Where/when/who you made the observation (examples: ETC 2015, a 30-player tourny at my FLGS in Seattle this February, etc)
-Links to FAQs of organized events
Do Not Post:
-Opinions/Interpretations/Reasoning
-An FAQ not associated with a tournament
-Rules discussions on forums

I've included rulings from the following tournament documents: Feel free to mention if I missed one

FAQs with definite answers
These answers are generally accepted by the community.

Q: May a Drakemaster (Dragon Prince champion) take the Star Lance?
A: By RAW no, although it has been allowed at several events and many assume that this was an oversight rather than an intentional ruling.
Allowed at Crossroads GT 2014 (from FAQ)
"Allowed at Australian Masters 2013, Dubbo 2014 and I believe CanCon 2014" -Swordmaster
"Allowed at most NE US tournaments" -John Rainbow
"No" -ETC FAQ 2015
Q: How does the Star Lance work with other weapons?
A: According to our army book, you use it in any combat round in which you charged and are mounted. When one of these conditions is not met, you pull out 'another weapon'. According to the rule book a character unable to use their magic weapon first attempts to use any special weapon they have (greatweapon, halberd), or a handweapon if they can't use a special weapon. A character can select both the Star Lance and a special weapon.

Q: Can I target a unit with Drain Magic if it isn't currently being affected by a spell?
A: Yes, as per the targeting requirements of the spell.

Q: When a spell with multiple targets (such as several from the Lore of Light) targets a unit carrying the Banner of Averlorn and several other units, does it still gain the bonus to cast?
A: Yes, since this situation fulfills the condition "Target a unit containing the banner of Averlorn"

Q: Can you place a 'phoenix reborn' counter for your bird if it's removed by effects that do not cause wounds, such as being caught while fleeing or 'removed as casualty' by purple sun?
A: No, only if it has it's last wound removed. While this does include killing blow and multiple wound effects, it doesn't include effects that simply remove it as a casualty.

Moved to rules questions
Loremaster remark: anyone is free to post in this topic as long as they feel that their post meets the scope of the topic. So a remark on a ruling at a competative event.

One of my friend attended at local small tournament in Tampere Finland november 2013 (8 player playoffs elimination style) Two of your question were judged by TO.

Q: Can a chariot with the Fly special rule (such as the Skycutter) march when it makes a fly movement?
no

Q: When a model with ASF attacks a model with both ASF and ASL, can they re-reroll to hit?
yes

--------

I would suggest that you would add few questions more.

- Does lileath blessing stack?
- Double having multidutes of asf or asl.
- walk between the worlds reform / enter buildings
- If you have ward save say ironcurse icon for example and get shield of saphery proc, do you only get +1 to ward saves you allready have and no 6+ ward save.?
- Forbidden rod magical attack (mainly for the purpose of banner of the world dragon)
- Banner of avelorn + bubble spells
- Arcane unforging vs. magic banners (does unit lose +1 to cr) vs dwarf runes, vs bsb (does bsb stop working)
- drain magic vs. plague of rust / skaven wither
- book of hoeth & bound spell
- Flamespire phoenix and fly-by with walk between the wordls
High Elves since Aug 2010: Tot /W / L / D - 100 / 75 / 23 / 2
Tomb Kings since Sep 2013:Tot / W / L / D - 31 / 18 / 12 / 1

Could you please clarify if the 5+ ward save vs WM is as well as or instead of a general 6+ ward (in your experience)?

Does it get played so that you have a 6++ vs all attacks and a 5++ vs war machines or or just the 5++ vs war machines (and no ward vs other wounds)?

Cheers

that would 5+ ward save vs war machine attacks, 6+ ward save for other kind of attacks.

Crossroads GT FAQ:

General Qs

Q: How is Spirit Leech played with “Unmodified Leadership”?
A: A unit’s “Unmodified Leadership” per the GW FAQ is the highest leadership characteristic in the unit. The GW FAQ also states that the only exception to this is when effected by Okkam’s Mindrazor and Spirit Leech, units may benefit from Inspiring Presence when only these spells are used.

As an additional clarification, if a Ld9 General is in a unit with the Standard of Discipline, then units within range of the General will get Ld10 for the effects of these spells. However, the unit with the General will only get the Ld9 as it cannot benefit from Inspiring Presence.

Q: How is Line of Sight calculated? 90, 180, 360 degree or something else?
A: LoS is calculated using the 90 degree front arc of a model

Q: If a unit contains multiple characters, can those characters declare separate charges to leave the unit.
A: No, only a single character may declare a charge out of a unit. Any remaining characters may not declare a charge after the first character has already done so.

Q: After one challenge is resolved, can another challenge be declared for the same ongoing combat?
A: Yes

Q: How are models with Random Movement moved and what options do they have when close to being blocked by other models and the 1"rule?
A. Random movers may not end their initial pivot within 1" of other units, unless the direction they choose to pivot in would bring them into contact with that unit (either with the pivot or a 1" move forward), in which case they charge/hit it. Fudge/charge the random mover into combat, maximizing combatants as usual.

Q: When do Bretonnians with the "Impetuous" rule test to see if they are compelled to charge.
A: They must test if an enemy unit is within their maximum possible charge range.

Q: For Monsters and Handlers targeted by Spirit Leech, which Ld value do you use
A: The Handlers

Q: For Warmchines targeted by Spirit Leech, which Ld value do you use
A: The Crew

Q: Do counter charges take away impact hits of chariots?
A: No

Lizardmen:

Q: Does the Predatory Fighter rule allow for an additional attack from models making Supporting Attacks beyond their single Attack (for non-monstrous models) or three Attacks for Kroxigor?
A: No, only models in base contact get to make additional attacks from predatory fighter.

Q: Can characters on Terradons or Ripperdactyls join other flying units? Can Tiktaq'To join other Terradon Riders units?
A: No

Q: Does Drain Magic work against wounds regained from invocation and armor save penalty from plague of rust?
A: No. Drain Magic only affects spells that have a duration. An instant effect that stays for the rest of the game is not removed by Drain Magic.

High Elves:

Q: Does the -1 Str. to units in base contact with a Frost Phoenix stack if they are in contact with more than one of them?
A: No, only -1S.

Q: Can a Dragon Prince champion take the Star Lance?
A: Yes.

Dark Elves

Q: Do the re-rolls to wound granted from the Strength of Khaine rule from the Cauldron of Blood only apply to Close Combat attacks?
A: No, The re-rolls apply to any roles to wound. This included magic and shooting attacks

Q: Do shots fired from Reaper Bolt Throwers gain re-rolls to would from the Strength of Khaine rule?
A: No, it does not, the Reaper Bolt Thrower does not have the Martial Prowess rule. Only the crew have the rule.

Q: Are Chariots allowed to re-roll 1's to wound from impact hits due to the Martial Prowess rule.
A: Yes, Chariots themselves have the Martial Prowess rule.

Q: How does Witchbrew work with a unit that is not already frenzied, due to the fact that the character which carries the Witchbrew is already frenzied? Does the unit take its Bezerker Rage test at a -3 Ld?
A: No, if a Death Hag has the Witchbrew in a unit that is not already frenzied, then the unit will test on it's normal Ld value, without the -3 modifier due to the Witchbrew.

Could you add few more questions.

- After starlance can you elect special weapon (mainly thinking about great weapon, halberd). And follow up, if you can what happends when you have shield. Can you use shield for the first round, or is shield removed right after starlance is used. In addition can you use shield against ASF model if you otherwise needs to remove shield from lower initiative model

- Crown of Atrazar. Before or after armor save. If after armor save, is the crown still used because you allready suffered the "first wounding hit"

- Are you allowed to cast drain magic without any real effect (or spells in general) ? (for the sake of shield of saphery)

- Does drain magic work against lore attribute (for example against shield of saphery)

- Can you choose the lores which allarielle will take when she is deployed or do you need to choose them on your list.

- When do you choose spells for teclis. Right when he is deployed or in army list

- Griffon / great eagle mount shredding talons and swooping strike. Does it effect the rider.

- Does fireborn effect mount? (griffon / dragon / chariots)

- Cloak of beards vs. runes, runic warmachine etc.

- How is dragon mage spell selection done? Do you roll two dices and choose one to be flaming sword ?

- How many shots skycutter with eygle eye boltthrower makes? is it 2 x str 3 + 1 str 5 bt or 1 str 3 and 1 str 5 bt?

Thanks Loriel. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the following ones seem to be solvable
*Starlance: the book entry specifies that you use it during the round you charge and then switch to another weapon, which seems fairly unambiguous. When you're forced to put it away you pull out your special weapon, or a handweapon if you don't have one
*Crown: I think the consensus is that RAW the crown is wasted when the wound is inflicted, even if you make the armor save (thus the order of saves isn't important)
*Drain Magic: This is certainly allowed by RAW
*Alarielle spells: this is answered in the book "Declare how many spells she will use from each lore before spells are generated."
*Talons/swooping: are these ones actually ambiguous, or do you just think they're something that might confuse people?
*Skycutter shots: I think it has a definite RAW answer
I'll probably post those with a definite answer, except alarielle because it's mostly straitforward in the book.

These ones do seem ambiguous
*Fireborn affecting mounts: i've heard this one argued both ways
*Teclis and his spells: the right answer is probably "check with your TO and agree with your friends beforehand"
*Dragon mage spell selection: wow, never realized how poorly written this was

Eirik wrote:Thanks Loriel. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the following ones seem to be solvable
Everything is solvable either with reason or blood. ;)

Il try to keep reasoning to minimum (it might be hard for me ;)) And while some question might have definite raw answer or very likely to have raw answer they might not be ruled that way. Perhaps some tournament has rules that fits the fluff (according to organizer) perhaps some wants to have some comp things.
Eirik wrote: *Starlance: the book entry specifies that you use it during the round you charge and then switch to another weapon, which seems fairly unambiguous. When you're forced to put it away you pull out your special weapon, or a handweapon if you don't have one
I actually first time realized that it isn't a lance, as it were in the old book. Since lance allows you to draw hand weapon. It was generally approved during old 7th book that you could draw great weapon after star lance, which was imo wrong. Anyhow I can see this question to raise a lot of discussion when two huge nerds collides in some eerie basement. Thus some tournaments may rule it is a lance ;) This is the reason why I think it should be answered by this faq.
Eirik wrote: *Crown: I think the consensus is that RAW the crown is wasted when the wound is inflicted, even if you make the armor save (thus the order of saves isn't important)
crown is a question that might arouse lot of emotion (IMO in raw it is easy to solved). This is same as any other "first" thing. for example gleaming pennant.
Eirik wrote: *Drain Magic: This is certainly allowed by RAW

that griffon / great eagle / fireborn / (was it skullcrushers or what a hell demon / warriors of chaos dudes with frenzy) is same argument. As it was not intended that we talk about reason, but some people think that since the whole model of ridden monster is considered a "model" thus anything that effects the whole model effects both. Some might be solved with fluff. having for example devastating charge on griffon could easily be considered to effect rider. But having something like sharpened talons is hard to justify ;)

Skycutter question about shooting isn't as obvious as it might seem. I think it is 1 shot str 3 and 1 str 5 or 2 shot str 3, if player wishes. Still might cause some confusion.

When do you choose spells for teclis. Right when he is deployed or in army list
His rule allows you to choose spells instead of rolling for them, so it seems to me that RAW, it still happens at the same time any other mage would roll for his spells. Then again, the wording of his rules is unfortunate: "He does not generate spells following the normal rules... ".

Just make sure you make a agreement with your opponent(s) about this, before making your list, It will save a lot of discussion.
Griffon / great eagle mount shredding talons and swooping strike. Does it effect the rider.
No.
Does fireborn effect mount? (griffon / dragon / chariots)
No, mounts never benefit from the special rules of the rider, fireborn is a special rule. Note that warbeast and mounstrous beast mounts will benefit by default, since they cannot be targeted seperately. But monsters and chariots will definately not.
How is dragon mage spell selection done? Do you roll two dices and choose one to be flaming sword ?
A very poorly worded rule indeed. Like with Teclis, make an agreement with your opponents. In my circle, I just roll one dice for magic selection (if I'm lvl 2) and I automatically get flaming sword.
How many shots skycutter with eygle eye boltthrower makes? is it 2 x str 3 + 1 str 5 bt or 1 str 3 and 1 str 5 bt?
If you choose to fire with the boltthrower, then 1 str3 + 1 str5. This is how everyone I know plays it, but I can understand how you can make a discussion out of this, in fact the rulebook entry of Bolt throwers begins with "A crew of two or more is required to wind..." which means you could even argue you would only get the str5 shot

The reasoning behind my answer though, is that you need to use the BS of at least one of your crew to fire, which means he can't fire his bow, since you're not allowed to fire with 2 missle weapons in the same turn. Looking at p.38, in the first paragraph of the shooting phase it says "During the shooting phase, a model armed with a missle weapon can use it to make a single shooting attack".

Re: FAQ: compilation of observed organized-play rulings

#13 Post by Prince of Spires »

@Bashtrigger and Loriel: please note, the aim of this topic is not to discuss the rules as such. It is to collect and list the different rulings tournaments have made on these things (which can be very different from the actual rules).

Feel free to create a new topic to discuss the different rules mentioned here though.

Thanks to everyone for posting. While I don't want this thread to devolve into rules debates, I don't mind debating whether a rule is debatable. For example, if you say "it's not very well agreed upon whether fireborn affects mounts." You can post something you know to be true simply because you understand the rules very well or because you've seen it discussed thoroughly, but of course evidence is best. "At every club/tourny I attended, everyone agree that the rule was straightforward and didn't need clarification." is a good example.

I'm going to take some liberties with which questions I post in the 'with answers' section and leave it to you guys to let me know if I'm out. I'll begin updating it now.

On the Star Lance for Drakemaster:

It was allowed on Australian Masters 2013, Dubbo 2014 and I believe CanCon 2014 TO's also gave a green light to it.

I`m stickying this as it`s a useful compilation to players looking to participate in or organize tournaments :)

Another question suggestion:

- Can you place Phoenix Reborn counter, if phoenix is fleeing and caught or other slain outright effect such as purple sun, dwellers
High Elves since Aug 2010: Tot /W / L / D - 100 / 75 / 23 / 2
Tomb Kings since Sep 2013:Tot / W / L / D - 31 / 18 / 12 / 1

Updated, thanks for waiting.

I took the liberty of adding the 'phoenix reborn' counter ruling to the 'known for sure' section rather than the 'controversial' section. Feel free to reprimand me if you think I've overstepped :P
Here's to hoping GW releases a new FAQ soon and invalidates this entire article (though the chances that they would actually answer every question are pretty slim).

It should be noted that ETC has reversed their prior (and silly in my opinion) ruling regarding the Golden crown. It no longer activates if the wound is saved via armor, and it therefore takes a wound making it through armor saves to proc the golden crown.

Another question:

- Does Drain Magic remove shield of saphery and other similar lore attributes (like welf lore attribute etc)
High Elves since Aug 2010: Tot /W / L / D - 100 / 75 / 23 / 2

I've been away forever, but I'll do some updating.

P.S. My first game back in about half a year was vs Manfred von Carstein. Screw that 'Master of the Black Arts' rule...

Can Walk Between World be used on fleeing units or units that failed charge?

Updated some previously referenced FAQs
Cleaned up some over-wordiness in the post
Added Independent WHFB FAQ document (seems quite popular at European tournies)
Added some questions including
- Dragon armor affecting mounts
- Walk between units on fleeing/failed charge as suggested by Loriel
- Hatred against HE affecting non-elf models in our army list

PS

Still taking any tournament rulings that people have personally witnessed, or linked documents to tourny FAQs. It would be nice to fill out some of these questions with something other than ETC.

unfortunately ETC is one of the most detailed FAQ's in the community. You should look at the thread....third year (or fourth?) into ETC under 8th Ed and people are still FAQ stuff.

Yup,

And many tournaments either use ETC pack, or have their own pack that has 90% of content copy/pasted from ETC
