Feedback on High elves 1000 pts. army

#1 Post by sion997 »

Hi,

I´m a returning player from 6th edition.

At my local game store, I´m going to participate in a friendly 1000 pts. tournament 8th edition version 1.8 (Lords < 25 % and Heroes < 25 %).
In the tournament no magic items are allow.

I have just learned the rules for 8th edition and I’m looking for some feedback on my 1000 pts. High elf list.
I´m considering the following:

-----
Lords:
Loremaster of Hoeth – 230 pts.

Core:
14x Archers full command – 170 pts. (loremaster go in here)
5x Ellyrian Reavers (Spear) – 80 pts.

Special:
16x Phoenix Guards, Standard Bearer – 250 pts.
10x Sword Masters of Hoeth, Standard Bearer and Musician – 150 pts.

Rare:
Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower – 70 pts.
Great Eagle – 50 pts.

Total: 1000 pts.
-----

I got this for consideration:
- Instead of Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower take another Great Eagle – then use the rest of the points on the special slot – then perhaps also switch the Ellyrian Reavers out for more archers?
- Instead of Sword Masters (150 pts.) use White Lions (150 pts.) – but are they a good enough hammer-unit?
- Instead of one Sword Masters of Hoeth-unit use 2x 5 Sword Masters with standard bearer (2x 75 pts. = 150 pts.) – but are multi small units (MSU) good in 8th edition low points?
- Instead of Loremaster of Hoeth use an archmage? But I like the loremaster for his toolbox spell selection. In that chase what lore should I use for the archmage?

Sincerely,
Sion997

I think the list is good enough for a returning player playing in a friendly tournament.

One thing to note is that the game isn't really designed for 1.000 pts. Games can get a bit unbalanced, especially if people try to push their list to the limit. I would say, go with this one. There's nothing wrong with it and you should have some fun games with the list.

A few more specific comments:
- The Loremaster is a beast at this points level, especially with no magic items allowed. With his spell selection he can do something useful in all phases, he has multiple options of the same kinds of spells, which means that if your opponent dispells one spell, just try the next. And spells like magic missiles are a lot more potent because their damage output remains the same (as does the number of power dice you get), but units get a lot smaller at 1.000 pts. With no magic items he's probably better than the archmage.
- Your core is fine. It does the job. Reavers for redirecting your opponent, archers for some shooting. Keep in mind that the loremaster doesn't have to go in there. You can decide the moment you put him on the table, and you can move him during the battle. He's fine in combat, though you do want to be a bit careful since he's your general.

- Phoenix guard are a beast. They just don't die, and they are a great target for magic buffs. Wildform turns them into combat mosters.
- Swordmasters are fine. I think if you go by the numbers White Lions usually perform slightly better because of their higher S. Consider running them 7 wide. Only the front rank gets 2 attacks, and at 7 wide they can all fight against a unit which is 5 wide. I would move the musician to the archers, since they benefit from it more. They can still shoot with a musician after a swift reform for instance.

Rare, again, is fine. The eagle is not necessary. 2 redirectors at 1.000 points can be a bit overkill. (I usually take 1 per 1.000 pts-ish). Then again, I wouldn't know what to bring for the 50 pts. Maybe drop 2 SM and bring a second RBT, or see if you can make room for a chariot by dropping 2 SM. They're not great, but are a nice force multiplier at 1.000 pts.

Thank you so much for your thoughtfully feedback, Prince of Spires 😊

It was very nice of you to walk through each of the units!

I am now considering:

- 3x sword masters, a musician (sword master) and a Great eagle (39+10+50 = 99 pts.)
+ a champion (sword master), a Phoenix Guard and a Tiranoc chariot (10+15+70 = 95 pts.)

I have to ask what is a “force multiplier”? – I tried google it, but didn´t find anything, I understood.

And just to be clear, when you talk about chariot, are you talking about Lion- or Tiranoc-? 😊

It's something that increases the effectiveness of what you already have, beyond what you might expect from the unit alone.

Indeed, SpellArcher is correct with the definition of force multiplier. Chariots by themselves aren't amazing. They're relatively slow and squishy. However, they're great to combine with a different unit, especially infantry, at lower points. The impact hits can be very deadly with an average roll. They move slow (since they can't march they're about as fast as infantry), but they have long charges on average.

The Lion chariot is much better than the Tiranoc chariot. It has more attacks and higher S attack, and are a bit more durable. On the other hand, they're also more expensive. I would prefer the Lion Chariot if you can afford it, but I think at 1.000 pts the Tiranoc chariot is fine.

It's true, hard to keep track of them sometimes because with Swiftstride they also pursue and flee pretty fast. They're less dangerous after the initial impact but if you break the enemy in one round and overrun into another say, that's less of a problem.
