Shame,

I think its biggest problem was that it was never as good as World of Warcraft its main competitor. I really wanted this game to do well in fact I switched from WOW to AOR when it came out but within a months I was back on WOW as it's far superior in many ways :(

Going free to play with a cash store for fun stuff would've saved it easily. My wife and I play Guild Wars 2 at the moment and I swear she spends more money on a free to play game than any other subscription based mmo we've ever played.

But, it looks like GW pulled the plug and EA Mythic had no choice really.

It's problem was that it didn't know what it was. Was it a PvP game? Then why did you need to get the gear from PVE? It clearly wasn't supposed to be a PvE game so why did they bother trying to cater to PvE players. They needed to have the balls to stick to what they wanted (a PvP RvR game) rather than trying to make big money trying to appeal to a broader selection of fickle gamers.

Another mistake I think they made was rehashing the DAOC engine. In an era when graphics are one of the first things that folks look at they used an engine that made it look old. I enjoyed playing the game during the time I did, it really was a lot of fun doing the various warzones but it just never actually felt all that Warhammery to me. If you'd have taken the IP away but left the game as it was it could have been any number of games, nothing really (other than obviously using art assets) made it really stand out as being a part of the Warhammer universe, it should have been so much more, sadly, we've yet to see a real GW MMO.

I loved this game. was great, just wish I had a computer that can run the full graphics.
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.

And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

i dont know why, but for me the game got boring quite fast. i got it and did not even play the complete free time, that i had.
you cant compare WHo to WoW, as WoW is much older and they had years to fix all bugs, fix game-flow, quests, characters, etc.
maybe i was just dissappointed by the game, after seeing all the great videos all the time. i dont know...

as with free-to-play stuff startrek online or starwars: the old republic or lord of the rings is also nice. the point is, its not warhammer. :(

Well, the WAR has finally ended, 5 years after it began.

Personally I lasted 2.5 years of that time in the game. Weathered buggy glitches, imbalanced classes, billing fiascos, and impossibly grindy content forcing me to play aspects of the game I didn't want to play. The final straw for me was finally getting to Renown Rank 80 and achieving the top gear in the game (looking forward to finally competing with other players on equal footing), only for them to move the finish line and introduce a new grind of 20 more Renown Ranks and yet even more powerful weapons and armour. My heart and wallet just weren't in it any more.

Loved my time in the game though. The large scale PvP was magnificent, and the whole art design of the creatures and landscapes was so distinctly Warhammer (just a shame that the overall design of the game wasn't). When the game went free for the last month, I couldn't get back in fast enough to take one last nostalgic trek through the landscapes and take as many screenshots as I could of the magnificent structures Mythic designed. Sad to think that most of that design work Mythic put into the game is now lost forever. Granted there are private servers out there now trying to preserve the game, but I imagine they won't last long once GW notices and cracks down on them.

So long Warhammer Online. Thanks for the Waaagh!
