Thanks Olthannon! Looking forward to a game against those dastardly Skaven something next week. I'm starting to get curious about the White Lion Chariot I've got assembled but unpainted... don't think I've ever heard the best things about High Elf chariots in 8th, but if I've got one, might as well paint and run one!

Sounds fun!

The White Lion Chariot isn't bad by any means. But they (and all High elf chariots) have a few issues. The main one probably is that there are better choices out there. SH perform the same sort of mobile role, but they're cheaper, core, and more mobile because they can march.

The chariots are also a bit flimsy. With just 4 wounds they don't like being stuck in a prolongued fight, and as a single model they really don't like cannons. This is made worse by the fact that you only get impact hits on impact (surprisingly enough...). So they lose a lot of oomph after the first round. And with the larger units you tend to see in 8th edition this means that chariots are usually not the optimal choice.

However, if you keep that in mind I do think they can be a fun support unit. I've taken it and the other chariots a few times. The WLC is by far the best choice of the bunch. The S6 of the charioteers and S5 of the Lions makes all the difference, and I find that bows on chariots rarely do anything. And don't forget about the fear tests. Even a LD9 rerollable test can fail at times, and it makes a big difference in combat. They also synergise well with infantry focussed lists. They move at about the same speed (a bit slower, but they charge further on average), and the infantry unit can help break steadfast to deal with the issue of being stuck in combat for a long time. And if you roll decently, then they can pack a good punch into a small frontal area on the charge.

It's proven to be a lot more difficult to find opponents in the Seattle area of Washington state, so I've gone back to painting some models/units I've got assembled and sitting around in my display case. I've also been slowly working on adding eyes and finishing up gems on units that are painted, but I won't bore you with repeats of stuff I've already posted. I've added five more Shadow Warriors, and a terribly recast Alarielle (seriously, that Finecast model is too stupid expensive) to the army. Since I couldn't trust the resin used for the recast, and I don't have a proper respirator, I didn't do any sanding or too much fixing, so she's in really rough shape. But I painted her up any way and hope that The Old World sees her in a plastics kit version so I can retire this one.

I know pretty well the pain of having to work with finecast recasts but also with true finecast models. My brother bought me Gordbad ironclaw and a savage orc on boar and the material is just so bad and the surface full of imperfections. The orc shaman even falls on itself due to its weight and the softness of the boars legs.

I see what you mean Tyrren but your paint job is terrific. In particular that flesh tone goes much better next to white than a paler option often does.

Thanks SpellArcher, I appreciate it. She'll have to do unless I manage to find an original that isn't an arm and a leg. I'll never know what possessed GW to make Finecast in the first place. Probably some very misguided directive to increase profit yield. My buddy has a Finecast Queek, and he had to really work it to make it look good, and ultimately, the seam down his face still didn't line up 100%. I really hope The Old World model line sticks to plastics in its entirety.

I found my originall Allarielle on https://www.whtreasury.com/. They've got a lot of great vintage models for reasonable prices. Keep an eye on them if you're looking for something (or ebay of course...).

As for Finecast, I think it was a material that could be used in the moulds for the metal models, which allowed them to get rid of all the metal models in their range. Which made their models more beginner friendly to work with (since metal was a pain in the ass as well, even if they gave detailed models). I just think GW underestimated the quality issues Finecast gave.

Hot damn, that site is great, thanks, Prince of Spires! Gonna keep that bookmarked and check back regularly.

I used them once, and it was a good experience. And, as you saw, they've got loads of interesting stuff at pretty reasonable prices, and from what I can tell, they get new models all the time. So keep an eye on them.

I've been using The Troll Trader, but recently, they've started listing things for eBay prices, which is really disappointing, but not surprising. I really hope The Old World brings back some of the newer High Elf plastics like White Lions, and Lothern Skycutters.

I'm in the process of painting up the Skaven half of an Island of Blood set so I can hopefully rope my partner into playing Warhammer since it's been difficult to find consistent opponents. But yesterday I took a break from those to paint up a model that's been primed and sitting on my desk for way too long: The Anointed of Asuryan.

Yeah, they look great. Except for the shield of the red guy in the back row second from the right. His shield looks grey, though I guess it might just be the photo / lighting.

Thanks, the definition is all thanks to liberal washes of Agrax Earthshade. I painted these with a speed paint technique so I can do their massive rat blocks in a reasonable time. So very different than painting High Elves. The shield in the back definitely looks grey in that photo, but it is indeed the lighting!

And some of my favorite models in the entire Island of Blood set, the Rat Ogres. I really wish there were a third model with this sculpt style so they wouldn't look so repetitive if you want to do units bigger than 2 ogres.

I would have loved to paint these two models, but I managed to sell them unpainted for a very nice price, so I won't complain.
Yours are very nice, they should look good on the battlefield.

I love what you did with the Skavens. I think you found the right balance of dirtyness that says "we're filthy skavens but we're still taking care of what we need to kill you".
Great job with the Rat Ogres !

Done with the characters for the set, now I just have 20 more clanrats and the two weapons teams and I'll have a fully painted Island of Blood skaven set ready for battle!

I've done a couple of test models to figure out how I want to do the traditional High Elf "fans" on their armor and uniforms. Once again, regretting leaving these little details all for the end. Along with the eyes and gems, this is going to be slow going, but at least they're starting from a table ready paint job.

Even at this stage they'd look quite striking as a unit Tyrren.

The skaven look great. You've really captured the nastyness of the little buggers.

Painting HE, especially the more recent models, always feel like "hunt the gems" at the end. They've got so many little, finneky details on them everywhere that there's a lot of space between "feels acceptable and almost done" and "done".

Since I'm going to be participating in the Warhammer Fantasy Battle/ The Old World Discord army painting challenge, I've set aside my Skaven until July. In the meantime, I've magnetized and starting working on this Frostheart Phoenix. I've got a lot of snowflakes to finish on the top surface, along with some more color blending, and the underside is pretty much just primed. Caradryan is currently just primed as well.

He's starting to look good. With some more blending and finishing off the details he should look amazing I think. I found that it's actually a fairly fast model to get painted.

Yeah, I think the biggest problem I had (that I didn't really solve) was how to hold it for painting lol I started with just holding it in my hand, but I have fairly oily skin, so I wore off some of the Chaos Black basecoat on the bottom. I tried just laying it on my cutting mat, but that moved around too much. So I finally fixed it to the clear pole and the base so I'd have something to hold, but that's still not the most stable. I'll probably pick up some gloves so I don't ruin the current paint while I do the rest.

Yeah, holding it can be a bit of a pain. I often see better / more professional painters either temporarilly glue the model to something (or use something like blue-tack) or clamp it in some kind of vice. I always remind myself I should get something like that and then don't...

Agreed, the head armour in particular looks pretty striking already.

If anything needs a bit of enhancing I feel it's that large dark area. Big C should set that off very nicely.
