Re: Nyeave's plog - Noble on Griffon. I need your comments.
Looks good. Can I suggest graveyard earth base sides rather than the reddish brown shade. Bestial/vermin?
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.
And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

It looks reder than it is. It's Calthan Brown for reference.
I agree it would look better with Graveyard Earth, but I prefer painting the sides in a color that I can get as spray primer. That way I can paint movement trays in a jiffy. On the other hand I have an old Revell spray gun in the shed. Maybe I could use that one to paint the trays in true Graveyeard Earth. I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.

Oh calthan brown is fine. It does like redder than that yes.

It's alive! It turns out if you are getting married and your sister decides to have a wedding 2 weeks later you wont get much hobbying done... But after nearly 2 months of no or at least very little painting done I got it going again - yay for me!
Instead of painting more dolls I started on my own gaming table and matching terrain. So far the table is nearly done and 2 homemade hills just need some grass on top aswell - pictures will follow when I am finished. However I found the Citadel Walls and Fences set for cheap and desided to add it to my small but fast growing collection of terrain. Its a simple but amazing little set of terrain that I had lots of fun painting. Pictures below and lets hope I can keep the pace up again.
Some of the details are just great like this little bugger hiding under the tree, the tombstone imbedded in the wall or the broken wagon wheel.

Great job! This is indeed a great kit - I've got one painted and another waiting in line. Now use the obstacles to protect your griffon rider!

Re: Nyeave's plog - Man the "fences"!
Finally!
We managed at last to have a free sunday at the same time and proceeded to finish our gaming table. It actually took no time to glue the mat on, trim it and make the finishing touches so in no time at all the models were on the table and a game was in progress:
The pictures above are taken at the end of turn one. A ton of drops from the High Elves, meant my cousins grandmaster bus was left all alone on his right flank with nothing but a few hundred points in core in front of them. As can be seen the rest of his forces are in dire circumstances and when his canon misfired the first turn, his bus failed a rerollable swiftreform at ld9 and my reavers (after having overrun into the flank of the halbardiers) made a ld4 breaktest and continued to pin him in place, the game was pretty much over. Much fun was had up to the point where it was pretty clear it was going to be a massacre to the elves
As for what else I have been doing. Basicly terrain. Appart from the fences above I have also been working on these to hills. The one one the right just needs 2 holes drilled in the top so i can attach that little rocky outcrop lying on top.

Yep. My Local game store has some doityourself trees that I just need to find a way to make detachable. Then we should have some decent forests as well.

You have no idea how awesome I find it to see that Loremaster in the middle of a battle!
It's a really nice table, especially with everything painted up.

Re: Nyeave's plog - Noble on Griffon. I need your comments.
Over the month i managed to finish 5 shadow warriors as well. God they are gorgeous models, but a little annoying as the torsos don't fit the legs very well and the heads cant be angled much either. Just makes me feel like the set doesn't live up to it's full potential. Wonderful minis though! A 6th will be added later when I invest in another box but for now I just assembled 5 of each.
I even managed to get a few more games in on the new table. The poor empire army has been trashed every time so far without me loosing more than a few 100 points (I think we need to take a long hard look at the army) but yesterday I got a game against a 2000 point skaven list from another friend. It was murder I tell you. I won by about 1000 points in the end but with only a few models left on the table and only after a very tight game with lots of crazy things happening. 15 archers hitting on 6's and wunding on 5's did 7 wounds to a unit of sensor bearers wiping them from the table in one shooting phase. My mounted BSB took 7 str 6 impact hits from a doomwheel and shrugged them all off with a 4+/6++. His screaming bell with its unit dead around it and the grey seer dead too stood alone for 5 rounds of combat against 20 swordmasters, a noble on griffon and 3 SH's with BSB - it even won one round of combat despite having only 3 attacks from the rat ogre to win by... I simply couldn't get through toughness 6 and 4++ and even when I one it was still unbreakable
Any ways I won and think I am up to 7 games total now and still undefeated

Re: Nyeave's plog - Shadow Warriors
So, the Holidays are over and it's time to start work again and to start swinging some brushes in the spare time as well. Seeing as those few people I can actually play with prefer to stay at 2000 points at the moment, I can see that I have all the models I need for quite a few different lists. Thus I can now paint exactly what I want instead of what I think I need for to actually play. Great!
So far I have managed to win the local painting competition a fair few times (with Tyrion, my Savage Orc and a unit of Dragon Princes (although due to holidays there was no real competition for the DP's) and Tyrion is also doing rather well in the Golden Bat competition over at Carpe Noctem (not winning or anything but as I was moved from apprentice to master category - a big thumbs up in itself - I hadn't really expected to get a single vote). Also I keep getting wonderful criticism from you guys and girls. Especially my Shadow Warriors received unexpectedly high appraisal in the monthly painting challenge thread - thanks a lot for that!
All in all this is what really keeps me motivated and drives me to try new things. I have started working on a model I have dreaded for some time now and compared to my former work it's a big one! I am currently working on the base (did I mention I love constructing bases?) and will of cause post a pic as soon as it is done.
Again - thanks for all your comments and criticism.

Re: Nyeave's plog - Shadow Warriors
I think the main reason for such high appraisal of these shadow warriors (and everything else), is due to the fact that you're doing such neat and clean work. The care you take is very easily noticed.
It may only be a minor detail, but i like your skirmish tray blocks. What did you use to make them?

Re: Nyeave's plog - Shadow Warriors
Its just a 3mm MDF board that was cut to size (now that I see the pictures I can see what a sloppy work I did...). I then mounted 2 magnets under it to keep it in place.NexS wrote:It may only be a minor detail, but i like your skirmish tray blocks. What did you use to make them?
And a few pictures for further explanation - because a picture says more than a 1000 words and so on.

Re: Nyeave's plog - Shadow Warriors
It's a dragon! I have owned this model since I started painting a few years ago and haven't yet had the courage to paint it. It's about time now.
I assembled the base and painted it up and used the left leg attached to the rock (it's a dragon drumstick - anyone hungry?) as a color test for the skin and scales. I am rather pleased with how it came out and the best thing is it wasn't that difficult. I experimented with the metals and it was so not worth it - I'll have to rethink my technique yet again...
As for the base. I like bases that tell a little story. Ever since reading some of the dragonlance series a long time a go I have had this notion that dragonsfire simply melts the flesh from the bone. To try and incorperate this, I made part of a blast crater and a hapless burned victim in it. The only way I could make sense of the dragons "lift off" stance was to have it lift off after finishing it's job (burning someone to crisp). Hope it comes through
And now for some pictures!

Re: Nyeave's plog - Here be dragons
Lovely start to the dragon's base! If I were to offer anything to it, it'd be that it might be worthwhile tapering some minor-ly scortched earth/grass on the outer area of the crater. Surely, the flames would spill over a little?
Also, thanks for sharing the skirmish tray concept, that's great! They might work well for my Chameleon Skinks.....

Good idea with the singed grass - I'll see what I can do. If any of you have other ideas they are deeply appreciated as I am not all together happy with how the base came out. It just feels a little less spectacular than intended
The bitsbox include lots of HE, WoC and VC parts and I can probably get my hands on Empire bits aswell.

Thanks. This got me on track again (I must admit I am a little intimidated by the size of the model). I have now base coated and washed the body. Pictures will be up when it looks a little less like crapMireadur wrote:umm dont leave it,.. Its looking very promising :/
Decided there was plenty of time to experiment with new paints later on

maybey you can add some orange/other fire colours to the black? the black looks a bit it less... intimidating? otherwise, great idea with the burned part! great use for the extra skeleton torso, mine just end up as ioN skeletonsNyeave wrote:Good idea with the singed grass - I'll see what I can do. Re: Nyeave's plog - Here be dragons
Would it be worth dropping a few of the large grain sand over it and painting the whole lot gray, then running a really really watered down orange over it, then blacken the top again.
My thought was that it might make the ground look smouldering.
just a thought

Re: Nyeave's plog - Here be dragons
I am in serious need of assistance guys - I am tearing my hair (what's left of it anyway) out over this!
Some pages ago I showed you pictures of a skeleton test model. I was actually rather happy with it but I thought the black was a little too meh, so I decided on a very dark green highlighted up to a "magical green". I really like this color it adds a magical feel to the model and I think I can do some great things tying the look of the rank and file guys together with the look of the etherials and so forth.
Now the problem is. Suddenly I just don't like the overall look of the model anymore - it's as if the colors just don't work any more and this is where I need your opinions. Is the green and red that doesn't work together? Is it the base? Is the green tone of the eyes? I can't really tell why but overall I am just not as happy with the model as I was. I really want the colors to work though.
First a pic of the old scheme and then a few of the model in it's current state:
This one was before I added the green to the eyes and weapon.

Re: Nyeave's plog - Help needed
Honestly I think it's just that the red is rather bright/vibrant. Sometimes that's good, but in this case it might help to "dirty" it up a bit.
Re: Nyeave's plog - Help needed
It's the gold on the helmet.
The black, red, green, and silver work really well with the white of the Skeleton, and the colors of the base, and the model has a really nice balance. The gold throws off the eye a bit, and makes it harder to look directly at the model. You could either get rid of the green, and put some gold on the weapon or keep the green and ditch the gold.
Still is an awesome paint job, either way. My two cents.

Another test model. This time for the ethereal parts of the army. I didn't think it would get that green, but I like it an it fits well with the green color on the clothes.

Re: Nyeave's plog - Help needed
I like it. An improvement perhaps could be an extra color between the green and the white highlight. Having that extra light layer in between would take the ethereal feeling a bit further I think.
As for the base. You could turn it into a graveyard kind of thing. Or add more dead bits to it. Or, something swampy (high grass, flock etc). Or, since this is GW after all, MORE SKULZ!
