Nature of high elf ships.
now i know elven ships are made of liveing trees, but how tree like are they?
for example could you cut an elven ship apart (say a dragon) plant the peices and entice them to grow into a new stand of trees in there place?
can you 'graft' two diffrent ships together to make repars in an emergency?
Do the ships have growing seasons? get bigger over time? flower? (or cone, or what ever type of tree they use does) do they 'heal' over time as they ships regrow damage?

I think there was another post on here somewhere where you might find some info. IIRC it related to the Man'o'War game which actually had High Elf Dragon Ships and the like in it. Looking for that post and some info relating to that game might be a good place to start?

The magical trees give up their lives in the making of the ship, otherwise the torture of being shaped would destroy them.
All of the repairs would be done using magic.

everything i've read on the subject (including the man O war manual) says the trees are still alive when they turned into shipsElessehta of Yvresse wrote:The magical trees give up their lives in the making of the ship, otherwise the torture of being shaped would destroy them.

so that goes back to my first question about how tree like they are.Man O war rulebook PG48 wrote:once each tree is uprooted, spells are used to keep the plant alive and the masts are actually branches grown out of the hull.

Re: Nature of high elf ships.
Each of the different types of War ships are made from different types of trees.
The Dragonships are so few that destroying one to replant a tree would damage the Navy's power too much.
Anything that would force you to 'graft' two ship together for repairs would be too much damage to get the two ships, and then it would require powerful magic.
Repairs are routinely done at the many ship yards around the south and east coasts.
If the ships could grow, couldn't we just water the Eagleships until they were as big as Dragonships?

Who's to say we don't? It would just take a long time.Elessehta of Yvresse wrote: If the ships could grow, couldn't we just water the Eagleships until they were as big as Dragonships?

I would disagree with that, sure in the short term you would lose one, but you could gain more in the long term but the point i made was could it be done at all. The dragon was exaple take a eagle ship, leave it on a abanded breach for a few hundard years away from the elves who tended it would it go 'wild' and just gow every which way as the magic that made it ship like broke down?
actully that alone implys they can do grafts with there ships unless they take a peice of dead wood to there ships like a (shivers) human carpenter would, they would have to find a source of live wood they can put into place to fix any damage and they just let them grow back together. With magic should not take longer then a few weeks or less. the other option would be ships can grow and they just let the ship heal back up.Repairs are routinely done at the many ship yards around the south and east coasts.
this is intresting. Take a look at Athel Loren, we could draw simlar analog between how the wood elves shape there buildings and the high elves there ships. If the ships could grow, couldn't we just water the Eagleships until they were as big as Dragonships
From what I understand it the wood elves have to 'inhibt' the growth of a tree other wise the forest would grow all over the place. so by that logic the elven mages are just preventing the natural growth of the tree when they turn it into a ship other wise it start sprouting leaves along the mast. Course I could be 200% wrong here.

If the ships were alive, they would have a regenerative function, which would mean that if damaged in combat, the navy policy would be to break contact, wait and start attritioning an enemy that can't get to a dry dock.
However, the Tenchi Muyo option would certainly be interesting.

it would depend how fast they grow back, if it's fast enough then yes that's an option, if it's slower then it's not.Musashi wrote:If the ships were alive, they would have a regenerative function, which would mean that if damaged in combat, the navy policy would be to break contact, wait and start attritioning an enemy that can't get to a dry dock.

He's referring to the Juraian ships in the Tenchi Muyo anime.dragonkingofthestars wrote:it would depend how fast they grow back, if it's fast enough then yes that's an option, if it's slower then it's not.Musashi wrote:If the ships were alive, they would have a regenerative function, which would mean that if damaged in combat, the navy policy would be to break contact, wait and start attritioning an enemy that can't get to a dry dock.

Re: Nature of high elf ships.
On the ships, yes they are alive (reference man of war) no they do not grow every which way (reference common sense and the nature of sea travel) and no only a special brand of starwood trees (huge) can be used to make a dragon ship so a hawk ship or eagle ship could not grow into a dragon ship.
In other news the elves were for a time unable to build more dragon ships due to the the fact that no starwood trees grew to the needed size, however a shadow warrior patrol found a lost grove early in Finubar's reign and these are now looked after by the white tower and actively bred in Saphery, as a result dragonships are becoming more common again.
Ps: Please don't ask me for references for the last one, I honestly can't remember where I read it...
