I'm a big fan of this thread, even when it's random.

Random Thought

Warhammer 40K and Humour

40K sucks because it lacks humour.

Why does it lack humour?

Because it lacks Dwarves.

Wings Over Caledor

Why are the Dragon Princes Groundbound?

We know why Dragon Princes stopped flying Drakes, they grew up, decided they wanted a career before settling down and raising another clutch of hatchlings. The problem with dragons is that they don't hear the biological clock ticking until millenia later.

In the meantime, Caledorian aristocracy find themselves without wheels, and aren't disposed towards public transportation. Yet, the logical step would seem to acquire a mode of transportation that was fairly similar to what they are used to, basically, another flying creature. That's where the Great Eagles come in.

Instead of horses, Dragon Princes should have remounted themselves on GEs, or even Pegasi (which seems strange that they haven't bothered to do this, considering that the Bretonnians managed to). While the wider space that an extended wing area requires means that less combat force can be applied in the same frontage, however, the increased mobility would allow them to hit the enemy where and when they wanted, coordinating their attacks to hit both flanks simultaneously, and a more effective way to use their lower numbers. Plus, they'd be better able to support the big Kahunas.

This also makes more sense in mountain country, where heavy cavalry can be bottlenecked in narrow valleys. It also eliminates the need for light cavalry to serve as reconnaissance and screening. Besides the fact that it keeps the DPs in practice, when the time comes to go walkies after adopting a larger pet.

I was wondering about this when I decided I wanted DPs in my army, why go from a 230-370 point dragon all the way down to a 24 point horse, doesn't make sense in fluff or mathematically.

Simple. No big animals around. Having to feed a whole mountain range full of big lizards means there is no big game around at all anymore. At most you will probably find a few small rodents.

The horses are all imported.

'Tis, The Season

So, Season's Greetings to those who care about such celebrations.

Wings Over Caledor

Why are the Dragon Princes Groundbound?

Dragons have innate mobility, which in the strategic sense make them far more dangerous and effective than a monster who can't fly; that means their larder is where they say it is, not necessarily confined to Alpine regions, as any number of folk tales will fierily inform one.

Also, going by Anne McCaffrey, most surroundings regions would only be too happy to send lifestock in the direction of Caledor, rather than risk collateral damage, unintentional or otherwise, dragons not being renown for distinguishing between old Bessy who's running out of milk and Manuel, your prime bull insured for a million gold crowns.

Elven Decline

Plot Devices 'R' Us

There's actually no reason for Elves to decline in numbers, since they do have the capability to forecast quite accurately consequences, more pronounced in 40K. You can use their civilization to illustrate any number of points you want to make about advanced civilizations and supposedly inevitable decadence. The interesting thing about High Elves is that they're are very few sheep among them, they may all be wolves in sheep's clothing, it just those that happen to find this unnatural have been politely asked to leave, and have in the meantime set up camp is some godforsaken tundra. Occasionally they try to crash the club, but usually get bounced right back out again.

The Future

Waiting for HEAB8

My trolley bag with 2 Warhammer cases is parked in my hallway, and has remained untouched for a long time; I've considered selling off the models, since I can't be bothered to paint them, and only 40K vehicles actually display well (painted by other human hands). There was some talk of a mega battle under 7th edition rules, since most people really disliked the new edition, but all of us have more important economic goals to achieve first at the moment. Some even have considered setting up business overseas.

It's possible a new army book will re-ignite enough enthusiasm to play my faction again seriously.

Thank you, and now for something completely different.

Year of the Dragon

Probably not, at least in Ulthuan.

Well, happy hunting for those still eligible for financial family tributes.

High Elven Mounts

Possible Candidates

To be fair, fluff (and common sense, not necessarily the same thing) seems to limit choice.

White Lions

Ideal for fast ambushes, and certainly more practical for bursting out of the woods than their Celtic chariot counterparts.Rider qualifications not as draconian as Caledorian dragonian ones, but still probably limited to characters rather than whole regiments.

Drakes

Surprisingly more plentiful, if available, than White Lions, since units of Dragon Princes would be so equipped. Maybe an upgrade for a single unit.

Warhawks

I always thought a nice cheap alternative for fast cavalry, without needing characters for the GE option. One can dream.

Giant Ostriches

Or slightly bigger ones, Elves being somewhat lighter than humans. For the LULZ.

Drugs

Putting the High in Elves

It's quite possible that most chemicals, natural or synthetic, can't get past their immune systems, which may explain the extreme lengths they go to get physical sensations. If Marijuana had an effect, you might not have a Sundering.

Meet the Elves | Netflix

The Elves have inhabited The Continent since before the time of men and monsters, and in The Witcher Season 2, they’re ready to take back their home. Hear from the cast as they explain how Francesca Findabair and Filavandrel will stop at nothing to pursue a “bright Elven future” for their people, even if it means an unlikely alliance with Nilfgaard. The Witcher Season 2 is now streaming, only on Netflix.
