Progress is being made: yesterday I put a base coat for all skins and then added a lighter highlight layer.

Priming and highlighting of unpainted models is complete, here is an image of some of the models to show how they look at this stage. Now begins the hard part.

Yes the airbrushing did save quite a bit of time, plus I like using it.
I think it would be even more worth it with bigger miniatures, like monstrous infantry and big monsters.
