Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Approaching the finish line on the commissioned High Elves. All that's left is to add the banner to this unit and the archers, add some grass to the bases, and paint the rims. Then I can finally paint my own models!

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Had my big order of MDF bases arrive today! I got about 400 25mm bases which should put me in a good place to finish my High Elves, do my Night Goblins, and still have bases left for Bretonnian infantry when I get to that project. Plenty of other sizes like 30x60, 50x75, 50x100 and 60x100 for other ...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

In my games so far I found infantry units mostly operating 8-10 wide. 2000 pts of ToW has a surprisingly small number of game pieces compared to say a standard 4500 pts of T9A or late 8th edition 2500 pts game. I feared the game might feel cluttered but it didn't. Especially since in most games a w...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Yes, the unit size debate is raging from what I can see. I think I'm leaning six wide for regular infantry, seven wide for elite infantry and eight wide or higher for archers but I'll need to do some testing! Still waiting for my LGS to get their order in so I am without a rulebook at the moment. I'...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Glad to see you back! Also that Avatar is stunning. I still haven't assembled mine after a year and a half because the very prospect of painting it I find too daunting. Thank you! It was definitely a challenge and required a brush sacrifice to the painting gods with all the stippling I did on the s...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Hello everyone! Well, it's been a good while since I last updated this blog. Please bear with me with what will almost certainly be a chunky update! There will be lots of pretty pictures though, so bear with me! January 2022 saw me start a Lizardmen army for a "New Year, New Army" project ...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Dragon Princes are on hold for the moment. I've decided (perhaps foolishly) to paint them in green NMM which is going to be a bit of a project and requires making some custom mixes in advance and doing one or two practice models on some junk minis I have. In the mean time, I've cranked out another m...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

When I got my DP's fortunately they cam pre-assembled. Regarding the priming, perhaps now is the time to invest in an airbrush? For approximately $90/£90 you can get a good compressor with tank that will last forever and a basic double action airbrush that is perfectly adequate for priming and high...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Thanks folks! I think these guys are next up. Wow, what a pain they were to assemble. I think I snapped a few of the decorative bits on the mount barding just from holding them together for the cement to set! So I had to trim them back on the opposite side to maintain symmetry. Nightmare. Anyway, it...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Bit of a break from the High Elves to paint a boss monster for D&D, which I've written a custom stat block for based on a medusa. Since it's a GW model I figured I'd share it anyway, and I put it on a square base for use in a Dark Elf army for Warhammer Armies Project down the road.

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

I love Alith Anar as a fiction character. He's just such a bad-ass figure. He's also on my "Models to try in an army" list of models. I've even already got a list for him (which pushes the shadow warrior factor heavily) here: https://ulthuan.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=88348 Now al...

Hi folks, back with another quick update. Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Bravo Fitzlock! :) I really like the Grecian crests and the way you’ve done them. Thank you! I love the old metal command models, they're so much nicer in my opinion. Plus they allowed me to turn my box of 8 into a unit of 11. :) (elven) horses tend to have that effect on people... Not sure what it...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Finally finished my Silver Helms and Prince. I have 11 knights including command, any more will need to be unit filler or I'll go without. I can't paint any more of these, they were a complete slog and almost killed my enthusiasm and motivation for the project completely. It was like I'd hit a wall....

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

On that note, any general tips for facing Bretonnians? #-o

I really like this one. I may have more mages than I need but I like each one for different lores. Very nice! You can never have too many mages. Haha, I'm actually tempted to go all the way up to 9 or 10 so that I have one for each Lore :P I'm not 100% on how many different sculpts there are though...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

The Sea Helm is very good, but what really blows my mind is the wood from the Prince Althran's lance. Check out JuanHidalgo Miniatures on Youtube, I used his tutorial for freehand woodgrain (and plenty more). I decided to go back and change the wings on the helmet to green and white and I think it ...

most of the issues I have with it are down to the sculpt/finecast How did you make this model look so good. I'm not sure I did, but I'll accept the compliment! Moving on from Alarielle I'm working on finishing some models that have been unfinished for too long, starting with a Lothern Sea Helm whic...

Hey guys, it's been a while - how is everyone doing? Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Well, I changed the gems again and this time I'm happy with them as they're a pretty good match to the box art. If anyone is curious, the recipe was: Sotek Green base, a glaze of black to the top, a glaze of Temple Guard Blue to the bottom, add a bit of white to the Temple Guard Blue and do an edge ...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

The handmaiden is really well done. She looks striking. I agree with Nyeave on the gem. It's fine as it is, though I would also understand changing it. If you do change it, you might want to consider also changing the other gems so they match again (though that might send you down a rabbit hole...)...

Re: Fitzlock's High Elves - The Glittering Host of Avelorn

Really nice job there. I can see what you mean with the red gem, but on the other hand the gem looks really good at the moment. I sometimes think you don't nescesarilly need to contrast every little detail as long as the overall contrast on the model is good. Something to think about, although I to...

That sounds great, I might try to see what I can find in the area. We moved to a new house though and unfortunatly I have nowhere to put the gaming table I made 6 years ago so I can't host the games myself, but on the other hand I really got the urge to try the game again. Re: Making Shadow Warriors viable

Less "The Shadow King", more "The Badass". There's something to be said for a mobile S7 Bolt Shooter that hits on 2's. I feel he might be interesting in a unit of PG with a High Magic Archmage say. So he's probably getting a 3+ Ward and the PG get -1 to be hit with shooting and ...
