Re: Favourite BSB builds?
Great weapon, full plate, Banner of Arcane Protection or Battle Banner, Seed of Rebirth, Talisman of Protection, Pure of Heart. I embed them in my Phoenix Guard to make them an absolute anvil. I'm still not sure which banner I like on the BSB, and which one I like in the Phoenix Guard, but I take bo...

Re: Ulthuan Rallies for War
Finished an entry into the WHFB Discord's Little Waaaaagh! competition and forgot to post it here! Time to go back into hibernation again until I muster the energy to paint ten more Sea Guard, a Skycutter and maybe another dragon with magnetized Dragon Mage, Archmage, and Prince (hoping to model him...

Re: Silver Helms Discussion
Since my primary anvil unit is Phoenix Guard, Silver Helms are great for filling out core. In smaller point games, I like them in 5 model units, with the intention that they'll support combats by charging into flanks to disrupt and generate combat resolution. But in bigger point games, and if you in...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
Completely agree with you there on a RAI level and this is what is currently played in our group. But wouldn't it be wonderful if GW did not leave so much open to our interpretation? Though after so many years of playing their games, what did I expect? You're not wrong. I went back to read t...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
This makes sense, even though the example image is not very helpful in that two models seem more or less equally distant to the charger. But if we assume the above to be as intended and the distance not being related to the charge distance, can't you create impossible charges with skirmishers? E.g....

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
The rules state you "move directly towards the closest model in the unit of skirmishers" and "as directly as possible into contact with the closest visible model in the target unit" both on pg.186. In General Principles on pg.92, Directly Towards is defined as moving to or from t...

Re: NOVA Open Comp Pack released
Comps have been and should be made based on actual gameplay and practical experience with many many data points. The game's just not there yet. Again, if you agree with this comp, great, have at it. But to think it's actually well informed in any way is kidding yourself. If you like it, great I'm gl...

Re: NOVA Open Comp Pack released
This comp is putting the cart before the horse in a big way. This guy is assuming a lot of things based off of feeling, and not actual data. I get that he's a power gamer and has stated as such in the Mountain Miniatures interview, but he in no way has any real information to comp things like this e...

Re: LOTS of Archers ?
I once made the mistake of charging Dwarf Hammerers in their front with my Cavalry Prince and Silver Helms, and won't be making that mistake again. Since I also play Dwarfs I can assume your opponent had the combo MRoHesitation+RoConfusion and then proceeded to wreck face  It was a low poi...

Re: LOTS of Archers ?
All that said, I don't think shooting is the thing that's going to win us games all on its own. It's a supplement. The more games I get in, the more I think building lists like we did in 7th, with bare minimum core and focusing on our Special and Rare choices, is what's going to get us wins. And fo...

Re: LOTS of Archers ?
In my game yesterday, a unit of 20 archers managed to remove a unit of 5 Chaos Knights in two rounds of shooting. Not quite making their points back, but it really helped remove an element that was threatening my center, and really helped me commit to sweeping into their right flank and completely a...

Re: Characters moving inside units?
Page 209 refers you back to page 146 in regards to how they attack, which states that models not in base to base contact can only make one attack. So characters would also only get one attack.

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
I would like to say that the idea that you cast a spell and then run your mage away to prevent dispel attempts is both cowardly and very unsporting. Remember this isn't 40k or Magic the Gathering. You should be enjoying a game with others, even in a tournament environment, and not be trying to win ...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
What happened with your phoenix guard I find kind of concerning tbh. Combat now seems incredibly grindy, because of how break tests work it's near impossible to make a decisive blow in 6 turns, unless you can somehow reduce enemy leadership significantly, or maybe just use some deathstar type unit ...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
This happened exactly in my game yesterday. My opponent had a unit of Great Weapon Full Plate Chaos Chosen on my left flank, I counter deployed with Phoenix Guard/BSB (Great Weapon, Battle Banner), I redressed them to 10 wide, and moved them up with the intention of receiving the charge. It also ser...

Re: Ulthuan Rallies for War
They look great! I love how the mage really pops. Thank you sir, I'm almost completely done with my High Elves models. It's been a hell of a journey. I've got about 30 Lothern Sea Guard to finish, 15 which I hope to finish this month, and then I've got a unit of 10 Swordmasters with full command, a...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
What are people's thoughts on spearmen? I need to test them but they seem decent and cheapish, a fairly reliable unit at taking a charge with spearwall, and as mentioned before courage of aenarion is a possibility. I'm not sure about their formation, is 7x3 worth it over 5x4? In my earlier builds a...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
On page 209 of the rulebook, under "Characters In Combat" it is written that "In combat, a character that has joined a unit... Can only have Impact Hits or Stomp Attacks directed against them if there are fewer than five rank and file models in the unit." I've then read through ...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World
What are people's thoughts on seaguard and the best size of unit, way to make use of naval discipline etc. I'm seeing a lot of people suggesting that they are the pick of the core units when equipped with the razor standard, I can see the logic to some extent, but I'm always a little skeptical with...

Re: Challenges and Who Can Fight Them
Moving Through The Ranks (pg.208) would allow a character to move to a rear or flank fighting rank as required to take part in a challenge. That’s right, that’s the point I made in my 4th paragraph. However, killing characters doesn’t feel so bad (unless they’re weedy Goblins, I guess). Killing cha...

Re: Challenges and Who Can Fight Them
Rules as written, I think you've found a way to avoid challenges. Personally it feels really gamey and not in the spirit of sportsmanship. But you may be right and it might also be the rule as intended for this edition. I would allow challenges from any rank unless the character/champion had refused...

Thanks so far, pointing me in the right direction to look with most answers. The organization of the books is not too nice to look for answers fast :-/.
