Re: how to kill 3-5warsphinx/necrocats
Volume of attacks, all the way. Their is truly very little in our army that will wound a To 8 creature on anything but a 6, and even that requires help in some way (magic items or magic spells). Focus on killing, instead of just wounding, because if you do get a lucky wound in, you don't want to see...

Re: How do you handle the terrorgheist?
Yeah, it can be pretty powerful in certain situations, but as been highlighted in this thread already, the gheist has some serious limitations that can be exploited as well. - Since the power of the scream is directly related to remaining wounds on the gheist, removing wounds from it is like a 2 for...

Re: Why the hate for High Magic?
Simply put, High Magic is entirely too situational to justify the opportunity cost of taking it, most of the time. We have 3 Direct Damage spells, that become less than useful when the prime targets are engaged in CC. We have 3 Augments, 1 of which can't be cast in to CC, 1 of which requires a speci...

Re: Dark Elf Rumours
As per the sac dagger, i don't see how you can pass taking it, especially with shadow. The tome forces you to take dark magic, and while a great lore, lacks the "i win" spells of the brb, mind razor is just that good. I'm not sure i would consider a sac dagger bunker an unnecessary tax, w...

Re: Dark Elf Rumours
Overall, I think Shadow with just a dagger will be enough to seal to deal, but I'm a little wary of eating my Witches. This point in particular is something I've been mulling over. Dagger has been nerfed, but can still be a great addition to Magic Phase control, if you're willing to pay the cost. T...

Re: Dark Elf Rumours
What other Ld tests would we be taking? I was certainly not meaning against spells. As for tests we don't often have to take. Combat Resolution? Especially with the fear everyone has about Hatred from the Dark Elves. Means first round of combat will be an uphill battle. What's that? Our whole army ...

Re: Dark Elf Rumours
Yes but Valour of Ages is nowhere near as good as Hatred. Yes we have rerolls normally and they're not an autowin, but it's a combination of us losing rerolls and DE gaining them (albeit for only one round). Even when we don't lose them it's bad, take White Lions and Executioners for example. They ...

Re: Mal's Blog - Star Dragon - CelestiCon Game 3 and Reax Up
I suggest keeping the original list for now, and maybe switching High to Beasts. One of the biggest issues with High is that fully 1/2 of the available spells are MM or DD (Soul Quench, Fiery, Tempest, Unforging). Once CC is joined in earnest, those spells lose a lot of their luster. The other half ...

Re: Phoenix Guard + Crown of Command; Getting the crown in there
The difference is PG will likely beat TG straight up one on one. From your post it seem that you're saying that PG will not likely beat TG but that's not that case. Baseline, they are pretty equal, but someone has to win. Overall, it tips toward PG, but there are a lot of variances that come in to ...

Re: New Lizardmen book, the good, the bad and the ugly
True enough, but I have found that it is actually not that easy for the LM player to arrange the scenario where triple Wildform is likely, and even double Wildform takes a lot of work. It seems to the me the strength in that build is the ability to have a higher change of getting at least 1 Wildform...

Re: High elves VS Empire help
While I understand people's frustration with their big toys being cannoned off, adding rules to make them worse really isn't fair to the Empire player. Cannons are their only answer to big gribblies. It's not like they have combat characters to do their killing. My second last game against ogres. F...

PG vs TG - 8/9 hit * 1/2 wound * 2/3 bypass AS = .296 wounds per attack on average TG vs PG - 1/2 hit * 5/6 wound * 6/6 bypass AS * 1/2 bypass WS = .208 wounds per attack on average Number of attacks will rea...

What do you mean by "gardist"? He meant add 2 more Phoenix Guard models. I am assuming a typo on "Guards" but I'm not sure how you get gardist from guards. Any how, by replacing the Razor Standard with the Banner of Eternal Flame, you'll save exactly enough points to put 2 more ...

Re: vs a dwarf gun-line
I think the big complaint with Dwarves is really that they don't have a lot of variation in their book if the want to build a competitive army. Gun lines aren't fun to play against, and I would argue that for many people, they aren't fun to play with either. Sometimes it does seem like tactics get r...

Re: Questions on High Elven Mobilty and Hard Hitting Units
I believe my buddy who plays LM has stated that the new Aquatic rule for Skinks gives them steadfast in rivers and marshes as well, and they still get the Skirmishers Steadfast in Forests from the BRB, so depending on terrain, that can still be a factor. Skink Ld has taken a hit with the new book, s...

Re: Foot BSB without reaver bow - convince me
@Worloch Sure, you do get 2 distinct special rules with the BSB, but those rules are not weighted equally. It's like Valour of Ages vs Martial Prowess; all HE get both but how many times do you benefit from VoA? The critical thing with a BSB is the re-rolls, the +1CR is usually a bonus (some possib...

Re: Foot BSB without reaver bow - convince me
When you select to turn a character in to a BSB, you are in essence paying points for access to 2 special rules and taking on some additional caveats about how that character is built and plays. Caveat 1 - BSB's can normally take a Magic Standard cost any amount of points. Usually, in a Magic Banner...

Martial Prowess on our Calvary is pretty cool, and gives us some decent options but when compared against the lance formation, it comes out as not quite as good. Lance Formation gives a few bonuses, the first of which has already been referenced: Brets can get Rank Bonuses while only 3 wide. This me...

At least we get ASF built in, that has to count for something. And while we obviously don't have the powerhouse combat lords combos, they aren't bad overall. Given that if we are taking a Prince as a combat lord, we are probably sticking him in a nice elite unit, then we can buff that unit including...

The White Lions failed to accomplish much of anything... I feel if I had gotten them into combat with the Treeman they would have wrecked him, but c'est la vie. Re: Frost Phoenix Danger - Overconfidence! - What not to do!
A lot of these anecdotes strike me more as bad luck, than being overconfident. For instance, charging 10 DE Crossbowmen - 20 shots hitting 5's (short range, S&S, Multiple Shots), wounding on 6's, Armor Save on 5's and Ward Save on 5's makes it 20*1/3*1/6*2/3*2/3=.4938 unsaved wounds on average. ...
