Re: Favourite BSB builds?

Frostheart Phoenix with great weapon, Dragonhelm, full plate, 5+ Regen. Good durability vs shooting and combat, puts our S6 attacks, Toughness 6, and quick/durable enough to jump out from your battle line to intercept incoming threats, or combo charge alongside one of your cav units for good damage ...

Re: Silver Helms Discussion

Once again they remain the one high elf core unit that can do combat. For ToW, they're also the only way to get high enough unit strength into a fight that you might actually break something outright rather than bump it around. I think they're a great unit to form the basis of almost any list around.

Re: Brawler Bash Results

The flagship Brets, WoC (in an edition where shooting is badly nerfed) and Empire with multiple Demigryphs and Stank.

I could have picked this lineup with my eyes closed.

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

I don't agree with 8th. It had problems, but also a defined meta that was balanced enough for virtually all factions to get support and representation from interested players. 8th was also the best edition for multiple unit types being represented in the table, with infantry actually being useful be...

Re: LOTS of Archers ?

100 archers are very unlikely to all be in short range, so the 100 is likely to be 50 hits. S3 vs T4 is ~17 Wounds. So you're looking at ~8 kills on a Chaos Warriors. If we're talking 2-3 turns for infantry to reach combat, 2 turns for cavalry, I'm not sure the 100 archers can do enough damage to di...

Re: All cavalry army ?

I think cavalry heavy is much stronger than an infantry focus in TOW. One of my least favorite things about TOW is that I'm not sure infantry are given enough incentive, which was true in 6th as well. TOW's a bit better than 6th, but the bottom line is that All Cav is great.

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

Tournament play often makes for fun, exciting games because both players are likely to know the rules, know their armies, and play to a level of mutually agreed decorum. It's the time I spent playing "casually" at Battle Bunkers which were the least fun games I ever had. Suddenly everythin...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

The more lists I write the more I want the standard game size to be 2.5k. Really feel this might be the best antidote to "herohammer". There aren't enough good character builds to spam more ridden monsters, the best option becomes more troops. I agree. My local scene is debating this hard...

Re: Tethlis' Army Blog, The Old World

Hey Prince. Thanks for the questions. -The Noble was good. I want a BSB, and I like the Frostheart as an intermediate monster that isn't' quite dragon-level investment, and he did well. The massive movement provided a lot of options, and I could have either put him into the big Longbeard combat, but...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

I agree. A 400 point monster that doesn't die all game and preserves your General can still be a worthwhile investment, even if it does nothing at all. Hard to imagine a Star Dragon doing nothing, though! In TOW, a lot of units won't get their points back. Just based on my experience so far, it's ve...

Re: The Cavalry Prince - List Design, Tactics, Battle Reports

Late to the party. The list logic tracks. In particular, I think this is the first list I've seen that leverages our Honors in a way that does more than unlock the ability to take a mount or join a unit. Interesting stuff. I'm still very wary of Impetuous and the traps that someone could set, primar...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

I'm sure the crazy character allowance was to reduce the cost of entry to the game, which obviously comes at the expense of game balance. Feels rough. I'm running lists without a dragon, basically all of which feel unnecessarily weak compared to just bringing the dragon.

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

Configurations like that Chaos Lord are a reason why I suspect TOW will be wildly broken in terms of balance. Rank and file have no chance against them, only Lords, and then it comes down to the specifics of the Lords in question. If you didn't bring an equivalent Lord, you have no solution. Shootin...

Re: Square Based: High Elves

I was really disappointed they didn't give white lions their different poses back from 5th edition, lion leaping, lion rampant etc. the multiwound one would have made them a really interesting unit in this edition, they seem to be a can opener unit, but swordmasters do that better. Their advantage ...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

Dragon Helm is pretty wild too. Only 10 points to go from 3+ to 2+ is a better rate than the rest get. Of course it's not common, unlike the seed of rebirth. Agreed. Dragon Helm is arguably our best item. I think the computation in White Lions is telling. It's something I have serious concerns abou...

It's funny that he ranked SMs the worst when he didn't really have anything good to say about Lions outside of the fact that they hit a bit harder. I agree that's very appealing, but he also called out the great weapon penalties of Lions, and there wasn't really any exploration or discussion about h...

Re: Square Based: High Elves

I appreciate summaries like this since they help to break down the army for new players, or veterans who don't have the book yet. Sometimes it's tough to tell if details are overlooked or not. Phoenix Guard get top billing but there was no mention of the fact that their fight in extra rank only work...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

Some armies would face that an fall into the trap. Some armies would generate a solution I'd probably shoot it as long as I could while stalling it, then arrange a simultaneous charge with my best units (all of whom outrange it due to being Cav, swiftatride, rampager's, etc) and do massed attacks vs...

Re: Thoughts on BSB

I'm starting out with elite infantry, but I have doubts about their viability. Infantry are an innately weakest unit type, and don't really receive enough bonuses to offset their fragility or always being on the receiving end of charges. I love them, but I do anticipate this edition heading back tow...

Re: Thoughts on BSB

I'm undecided on a lot of the magic banners. I think Rampager is a really big deal, and Lion Standard is good for armies that don't have a lot of Ld infrastructure in place (one with a Ld8 General for example.) I do think getting +D3 combat res is potentially very strong. Especially if you play with...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

Is it just me, or do you not get +1 Armour Save for being mounted any more? The only mention of improving your save from being mounted is when the steed has barding. If that is the case, Silver Helms will only ever be 3+ and you will need to take Dragon Princes for a 2+ save cavalry unit as they co...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

I suspect it's a throwback to running Swordmasters in small units to maximize their hitting power and mobility while keeping them cheap enough to throw away. Running them in 2x4 allows them to triple march, and Drilled means they can reform flexibly at need if you want to maximize their attacks or c...

Re: Thoughts on BSB

Our leadership abilities don't really affect Break Tests, and break tests is where we need the help. As long as you can pass a Break test on your unmodified Leadership, you're very unlikely to be wiped out completely. Because of this, I'm bringing BSBs. Our army is mostly made of infantry, and most ...

Re: White lions

Lions definitely have the highest skill ceiling and I'm not sure it's worth it here. Strength 6 and AP3 are golden, and have their place. But the challenges of getting them a charge seem very, very high. Since their open order change facing doesn't work when they march, I'm not even sure how to use ...

Re: A Look at High Elf Rules in The Old World

Looks good as a list. I'd be loathe to leave home without any cavalry, and I think some Silverhelms with Swiftstride, First Charge, a first-round combat mentality with lances, and a bit of armor could be good from a learning perspective. But I think your unit loadouts and their configurations look g...

Re: The Lion Chariot Doesn’t have Swiftstride!

I believe that's right on the weapon interaction, Always Strikes Last + Always Strikes First interactions cancel. Frost Phoenix is a whopping 3 points of Toughness though, for Toughness 6, compared to the Griffon merely giving Toughness 4 to an Elven character. I believe that's right... The Griffon ...
