Re: Horde Unit of Lothern Seaguard?

Only if you built your terrain as a green mat with a tree or two on it. But those always looked kind of stupid to me. You'd have to really build a thick group of trees to make it block LOS, from what I've seen. The hedge rules you guys use are unique, but if you can see a unit you can shoot at it a...

Re: Horde Unit of Lothern Seaguard?

I've claimed it before, and I'll mention it again, I think that the horde rule is more of a gimmick than a practical strategy. Across Warhammer, I think there are very, very few units that will benefit more from Horde than they do from a more practical narrow formation. For Elves in particular, try...

Re: ....Have we gone top tier?

@author - no, we have not gone top tier. we are mid tier as always, book of hoeth or not. Theory hammer/math hammer are good for casual discussions but when the time comes to put it all in a good list and then take it to the field and win in an all-comers enviroment things suddenly do not seem so r...

Re: ....Have we gone top tier?

I don't believe spells are easier to cast. Spell casting values have on average increased between 6 and 15 points. You actually cast fewer spells per turn than you did in 7th, have less flexibility in spell casting especially considering the magic phase doesn't scale with game size or by adding add...

Re: 100pts of waste - RBT's

Even with TO10, the RBT is a better choice due to the flexibility vs other troops. The d3 wounds helps to make up for the lack of shots, and the added range means you won't have the -1 to hit for as long as the archers, too. Plus, you'd spend more on those archers than the RBT. I've always found th...

The three relevant rule entries you need to be aware of: 1) The BRB p.108 "Split Profile" Bottom half of the paragraph: "A war machine's Wounds are always considered to be equal to the number of remaining crew models (which is stated in the warmachine's entry) - the Wounds on it's pro...

Re: 100pts of waste - RBT's

I would disagree with this assessment entirely. I always think at least one RBT is necessary (I take them with my DE as well). There are so many things they are very useful at taking out, and they almost always earn their points back. What are you going to do if your opponent whips out a bloodthirs...

Re: Book of Hoeth

Bolt Thrower wrote:You didn't need to reach the casting value for a normal IF on 6's in 7th edition either. In my opinion, the book of hoeth was only errata'd to delete the double ones part since that is no longer a miscast; you still need to meet the casting value with it.

This is correct.

Re: 100pts of waste - RBT's

The RBT is NOT a bolt thrower it is a separate warmachine. its rules sate the player can either fire 6 shots at S4 -2Sv OR fire "like" a bolt thrower. Since the base warmachine rules make no mention about # of crew required, the RBT is not affected by the rules for BT's And, if you want c...

Re: 100pts of waste - RBT's

As mentioned, if you look at the format for each warmachine there is description before any rules.

People are reading way to much into that sentence. Why would a bolt thrower be handicapped when the other war machines are far more complicated?

Re: Book of Hoeth

On a different tack, who cares? Imagine, you take the book, opponent gets first turn, uses Power Scroll plus dwellers.... no more book of hoeth. You realize, of course, that no matter what you have on your archmage, he's dead if he fails his strength test and loses all his items, right? There are n...

Re: Book of Hoeth

??? If it was rock-solid rules writing, there would be no need to consider intent - the rule would cover it. By definition, the fact we have to consider intent means the rulebook isn't doing it's job as well as it could. If I a rule is intended to be played a certain way, it is written so that the ...

Re: Book of Hoeth

Baerion - yup, very good points. However, i believe we need 2 sets of terminology to be defined for Magic. Without either, the BoH and Teclis are open to interpretation. Without such definitions, it could be argued that the ROLL has been passed, but the TEST has not. For example, the casting roll c...

Re: Book of Hoeth

Ok, I may be reading it wrong. It seems like it is irresistible only with what would otherwise be a successful casting roll that includes a double. Example, I need 15+ to cast something. I roll 5 dice and get a 2, 3, 3, 6, 4. Total is 18.. spell goes off, and since there are double 3's it is irresi...

Re: The new lores of magic

One of the things that I'm currently working through is the way spells are picked. Since you have to pick a lore (and spells if you have the seerstaff) when you build the army and not when you know who your opponent is/what units you'll be facing, I've been more likely to try and fill in weaknesses ...

Re: Death of the Medium Magic Phase?

One major drawback of the seerstaff now is having to pick the spells when you actually build the army and I think that hurts the "medium magic phase" in a take-all-comers list.

Re: White Lions of chrace 8th

Right. So I think White Lions are some of the best units we have. WS5 I5, re-rolls is nice and all, but its the S6 that really matters. The 3+ AS vs. shooting is what makes them (imo) superior than Sword Masters. Keep in mind that both units can be improved from your spells, so unless you plan on h...

See, the thing is.. LSG will be a good choice as a general unit that can fit both roles of Archer and Spear except.. They're 13 ppm with Shield. When some Spears die, I'm like OK, they died. When some LSG die.. I feel as if I'm using Sword Masters simply because of cost. Spears are the only thing c...

It's hard to argue that the LSG did not get much better this edition. It's also hard to argue that spears, and high elf units in general didn't get better. LSG are more worth their points then they were, but they aren't automatic selections, either. I'd say there's no clear choice and it will come d...

Re: 8th edition and how it affects high elves help

Shoot in two ranks was never a solution to anything in any edition. Strength 3, ballistic skill 4 no trick shooting isn't going to revolutionize the game now that we can do it with a narrower front. It helps LSG, but LSG are too expensive to simply sit back and shoot with, and are not going to be i...

yellow and dabber are correct, but you wouldn't actually get to choose which of the units behind you get to charge. When he flees, you make a line from the center of your unit to his. He then rolls his flee, moves along the path, probably bouncing over one of the units behind. You then follow a dire...
