Problem with maiden guard is that they wont make a dint in the demigryphs armour save. S4or not, they'll be running lances for the 1+ save. No, since you need to be in base contact with the anointed to have to reroll ward saves, and a model is never i base contact with himself. So the phoenix is not in base contact with the anointed. And here I've been avoiding OTS on characters with ward saves for all this time, and I didn't need to.....

I'd suggest reading a few threads and battle reports here from the more established players, to get an idea of what sort of approach you like and then build towards something along those lines.
