I know. And I approve. But there is some middle ground between cornering and rushing out into the jaws of death.

I think taking a slightly more cautious approach and keeping a more coherent battleline would have helped. Though with the skaven managing to remove a canon T1 already and threatening more of the shooting, keeping ranged superiority was not a given.

Generally Dwarfs outshoot the opposition and they’re slow, so pushing is a bad option. Attacking, even in a favourable situation is fraught with difficulty because they don’t have the speed to adjust if things go wrong. That said, it can work and I agree this was badly executed. Allowing a triple charge on your main block is optimistic in the extreme.

I think this is a big issue indeed. If you're running M9 cavalry then being out of position often only means the delay of a turn. If you're M3 infantry then being out of position means you just don't contribute anything to the battle anymore.

I think this is one of the reasons Lord Anathir claimed dwarves were one of the hardest armies to play. And even when castling and playing a gunline, any mistake in positioning would be hard to correct and could be ruthlessly exploited by your opponent.

Still not sure what the dwarf player could have done differently though. The large skaven blocks were difficult to deal with and could always either occupy a unit for a turn until backup arrived or just grind it down with numbers. The skaven could just suffer losses a lot better then the dwarves.

Yup, it was a hard matchup, but the charge was a bit too reckless, anyway. All three Dwarf units could have handled the Abomination and then perhaps grind down the Stormvermin. As Rod said, keeping them in order would have at least given them a chance. My opponent was tricked into chasing the Gutter Runners when they had already done their job.

Also - our Dwarfs march at 3xM, so that's partly why they tend to be more aggressive than most.

I'm playing the final battle of Chaos vs VC tomorrow, wish me luck!

I like the 3xM march. It matches the dwarf hardy nature. And it opens a bunch of different playstyles for them that probably make them more interesting to play.

There was a blackout during the game. It does not bode well the take on the Undead during the night...

Just w shot from the final game of the Vamps vs Chaos campaign. Last game went down rather badly - my infantry held steadfastly enough, but the Black Knight bus turned my flank and that was it.

I like that Herdstone a lot, the fire lighting effect in particular is something I've struggled with and never really managed to achieve.

How long was the campaign of Chaos vs Vampires? And who won in the end?

It was my first time trying the fire effect (object source lighting) - the Duncan (WH TV) tutorial was very helpful!

The campaign was 5 games, we we're tied going into the last game - so it ended up a 2:3 loss for my Chaos horde. Still, great fun was had.

We're currently playing through Space Hulk. Hopefully some Warhammer will be back on the menu in the summer :)

Nice to see you drop in again. Is life settling down a bit for you or is it still hectic?

The battle looks pretty epic. Commiserations on losing the fight and the campaign. But chaos always returns in the end. So don't despair ;)

I really like the herdstone as well. Where is the model from?

Two kids makes things rather busy, but with the younger now in daycare I've a bit more time to paint. I'm also selling some of the stuff I'm unlikely to paint (ever) - some old elves have got new homes instead of filling up the closet.

The Herdstone is a relatively new release from GW - they are really doing a good job with terrain (save for the totally unnecessary Sigmarine details).

I took him to Games Day - we tried some of the contrast paints on a Space Marine. The stuff seems quite nice - I'll be considering it when its time to paint up all the Skaven Slaves...

I got the limited edition SoB, too. Should be fun :wink:

I saw the contrast paint as well. It looks pretty usefull. Indeed for either large models or large batches of basic R&F models like slaves. Some Youtube movies I saw about them make them look awesome. But I always think you need to factor in some skill as well, which the people making the movie have and I don't. I guess I just have to try them at some point.

Game done!

My cousin, whom I introduced to Warhammer back around 2000, came to visit and we managed to get a game in. I picked both armies and picked the scenario - a rather simple affair: 4 objectives, each worth 1VP.

I'll post a full report soon. Meanwhile, here's a a teaser :wink:

Here we go then!

Turn 1:

Both sides advance, a cannonball falls short of the Chariot but manages to kill a Centigor.

Turn 2.

Some more marching and another decent hit by the cannon - this time the Gors suffer some casualties.

Turn 3.

Triple charge! The Chariot, Razorgor and Ungors try to have a go at the Halberdiers block, only to bounce back immediately (the Razorgor crucially having failed its roll). The Beastmen Shaman manages to kill some 8 Handgunners with Flock of Doom.

Turn 4.

Beastmen hordes move into position - the Gors to the flank of the advancing Halberdiers, the Bestigors right up the Greatswords. The Cannon scores a direct hit on the Shaggoth and kills is outright!

Turn 5 and 6.

The Gors butcher the Halberdiers. The Greatswords put up a fiercer fight but are, in the end, also overcome.

The result is a draw, technically: the Empire forces claiming the courtyard and wheatfield, while the Beastmen are left in control of the forest and cemetery. We can only assume the empire cavalry came round the hill immediately afterwards, because thing were sure looking bleak for the forces of men!

Looks like a fun game! It's a shame about the Greatswords, I would have thought they'd hold on a bit longer than that. It looks like the Empire Halberdiers pursued after those Turn 3 charges, I think that might have been the turning point as that put the Beastmen on their flank. I also wonder if the Empire had held back a little and let the cannon do more damage if they would have performed better.

Both armies look great, by the way!

The Empire, as is often the case, got punished for failing to keep their line compact. The Halberdiers dragged out of position, the Pistoliers not covering the flank, the Greatswords out of BSB range (even more so, as he was dead at the time they lost their panic check :lol: )...

Mistakes all round, but I was scared of concentrated charges against my infantry units, getting hit 2v1 would be devastating so I decided to pick individual fights.

In the end, the Beastmen had more individual quality. Also, as you may have noticed, the Empire magic was conspicuous for its absence. I got Earthblood and Shield of Thorns - both largely useless and neither was cast throughout the game. Meanwhile, the Beastmen were picking off Handgunners with the Flock and occasionally buffing units with Wildform (defensively mostly).
