Re: Rogue Trader's Painting Log: Stupid Prince & Albino Grif
I'm sorry RT, but you've been misled:
That griffon isn't albino at all! (Albino animals have red (or pinkish) eyes)
Great paint job though.

The good work keeps coming! Well done.
I also have a load of dodgy axes. Grrrr.

Awesome paint job! Are the bases staying like that? I can't help but think they really detract from the great paint job.

@JR
Thanks…we must have purchased the same batch of White Lions.
@Berimbolo
Thanks for the feedback, I am undecided on the base…the Griffon was my first large model (painted before the Skycutter) so I just replicated my infantry bases…the look may be a bit too plain for a 50x50 base.

Re: Rogue Traders Log: The Stupid Prince & the Albino Griffo
RT asks to see his Ulthuan Flying Licence, his Monster Assignment Licence and his Ariel Combat Licence
Nothing, just an invoice for “1 Griffon”, signed The Flash Broker
After Payment the Prince starts training on the flight simulator, followed by RT’s e-learning for Griffon Riders and Swooping Strike for Dummies
After removing his “L-Plates” the Prince takes to the air and in Princely fashion starts to show off
Quickly exceeding the statutory speed limit
And loses control, RT (picking up the L-Plates) realizes that further training is necessary
As the Prince disappears from sight

What pets I wonder? Parrots and other birds? Maybe dragons? I can't see dragons going well for the RT.

From his now airborne cutter RT locates his ‘man’ or more correctly his ‘Orc’
RT…trying hard to appear relaxed and confident…enters into negotiations
Da Boss claims the squigs make very good pets, day are very affectionate and take care of dare own food
RT spots a large metal studded whip…a must have accessory
Aware of the Elven fashion for Exotic Pets with an edge…RT enquires if he has any more
RT suggests the Prince helps with the Roundup
Footnote: Whilst obtaining the necessary licenses a dental hygienist goes missing after a routine health check and the squigs are taken to the Lothern Zoo

Re: Rogue Traders Log: There is an Orc in Lothern
Hearing a commotion in the yard, RT staggers outside still wearing his New Year fancy dress
clutching his best costume trophy
and notices a spikey group of horsemen parading around
Suddenly he hears “There’s a damned Orc in Lothern...charge”
RT realises he is in deep s*** and cries out blandly “I’m an Elf” whilst struggling to remove his costume…the unit leader swerves away at the last minute
From their flag and arrogant demeanor RT identifies the vain group as Dragon Princes
Footnote: For a change I decided to paint the DP’s on the sprue and assemble after painting. This proved to be a dumb idea, whilst painting was fun, assembly was a nightmare.

Love this log, entertaining style of presenting your work which is top draw! Is that all freehand on that DP banner?
My only constructive criticism is your bases don't do just to your painting skills, whilst its a tidy finish you need to add something to break things up. Big fan of army painter tufts myself but there's lots of other options out there.

@Gandalf_82
Hi, thanks for the comments and feedback. The banner was my second attempt at freehand…so plenty of room for improvement.
My intent with the bases was to balance the ‘bright and busy’ look of the average elf model with a plain base, however you are not the first to consider them too plain. (The O&G bases are more adventurous as the models are generally less colourful). I may upgrade the bases…particularly if 9E moves to round 32mm bases.
I agree on the Army Painter tufts and have used them on the base for my Transmutation Phoenix (WIP).
Base with mini Phoenix.

Re: Rogue Traders Log: There is an Orc in Lothern
Looking at the splendid armour…RT thoughts wander to next year’s fancy dress party
The DP Leader explains they are on a quest to wake the sleeping dragons and want to hire a guide to the Dragonspire Mountains
Having recently watched the Desolation of Smaug, RT’s not sure this is a good idea
Another DP mentions a rumour about Ulthuan sinking and their concern for the dragons, fearing the resulting Tsunami may drown the sleeping giants
Someone else starts singing this month’s Caledor Dragon Song
Very considerate…an incredulous RT surveys the group…recalling the story of Atlantis and thinking it would really bugger up the next New Year party
After an advanced payment RT agrees to escort the DP’s…he will however be observing any awakenings from the Cutter

Some more fantastic stuff! Love all the models, the Greenskins are particularly fine. I second the opinion on the bases - nice to see the extra effort you've put into the Phoenix one. Keep up the good work!

This an awesome army and blog! The painting is fantastic, once again this site leaves me jealously looking at other people's work wishing I had that level of skill and presented in a fun and different manner, too.
The sky cutter and roc in particular are incredible, I can't wait to see more!

Re: Rogue Traders Log: The Compassionate Dragon Princes
RT decides the company is too noticeable, for a smuggling outfit too easily seen…too likely to get caught.
He calls in some consultants, experts in hiding and sneaking
S***, RT jumps back as a heavily scarred face emerges from the grass.
He then shouts Eureka! Quickly followed by grass, grass, grass, we need lots of grass
The Company’s morale improves…until RT explains it’s not for smoking…but for hiding in.
Unfortunately the entire company now needs training in ducking, creeping, wriggling and tiptoeing about…plus he has to order a lot of antihistamine.
As the Shadow Warriors silently disappear RT thinks it might be easier to replace everyone with Wood Elves…f*** they even come with their own trees.

Re: Rogue Traders Log: Hiding in the Grass
Getting bored with the monthly accounts, RT surreptitiously works on his ‘Beginner’s Guide to Magnetic Movement Trays’
Starting with an old plastic movement tray.
Entering a trance like state he tackles the first question ‘To magnetise the model or the tray?’
Upon waking he decides the easiest option is to magnetise the model.
Next he reviews an ancient text detailing the different types of models…plastic, metal, finecast (he stops himself spitting on the floor) hybrid…etc…etc.
Upon waking he divides the models into 2 categories, heavy and light and does a bit of ‘magnet’ research to determine the type and sizes.
He logs onto ebay and helped by his years of smuggling sources a great deal from Cathay (ent-mart.com) and negotiates free delivery.
Now fully alert and pumped with adrenaline he considers how to magnetise the trays
…and gets totally confused…steel sheets (not all stainless steel is magnetic), tin sheets, steel paper, rubber steel sheets,
magnetic paint, magnetic tape, custom made supplier options.
Eventually whilst munching thru a tin of biscuits…he opts for Tin Plate.
Tin plate is highly magnetic and thin, only 0.5mm and can be cut using a good pair of scissors…no need for tin snips, nibblers,
saws, a guillotine or any other professional type tool.
He suspects that its made by elves as it comes in very handy 100mmx250mm sheets.
Snip, snip, a few dabs of superglue and a few seconds later one magnetised cavalry tray.
One sheet makes 4 cavalry trays (5x1 models wide).
It can curve a little at the edges when cutting with scissors so RT sticks it under a table leg to flatten it out before gluing.
To finish a spray of Goblin Green (Army Painter) followed by a protective varnish spray (Testors Dullcote)
…the models still stick to the sprayed tray.
Feeling pleased with himself RT moves onto the lighter models…of course the tin plate can be used,
but lighter models can sometimes be hard to remove, so he decides on magnetic sheets (steel paper).
Again thin and very very easy to cut. The magnetism is not as strong as tin plate (not even close) but
works well for plastic infantry models.

Nice work. I was wondering why assembling the DPs was such a pain after painting them?
Re: Rogue Traders Log: RT's Guide to Magnetic Movement Trays
LOVE YOUR WORK. How did you get that color on the cloaks of the Shadow Warriors? I really really like it!

Re: Rogue Traders Log: RT's Guide to Magnetic Movement Trays
Motley,
Thank you, I appreciate the encouragement.
JR,
Hi, the main problem was the head of the horse, after gluing the 2 parts together I was left with a noticeable gap on a couple of the figures which was much harder to fix once painted. A few of the arms were a bit tricky and I had difficultly attaching the banner to the pole and the arm holding the pole to the torso + some of the swords and lance ribbons kept falling off.
A lot of the problem was my inexperience with the new (a relative term as my previous experience was painting metal models back in the 90’s), plastic models and that the components for each figure had specific counterparts combined with my tendency not to read the instructions thoroughly. Case in point as I try to assemble a unit of Phoenix Guard.
As an aside, I will try the ‘painting on the sprue’ technique again, for large 20+ units (to vary the painting approach and maybe speed up the painting). I would probably restrict it to models where the joins on the finished model are not easily seen, as the glue quickly messes up the paint work + I would assemble a few trial models first.
Careck
Great that you like the blog and the cloaks. I was aiming for a ‘Shadow’ Grey type look.
The main 2 colours were Thunderhawk Blue and Fenrisian Grey. I used a base of Mechanicus Standard Grey mixed with a small amount of black and then applied TB over the entire cloak except for the deepest recesses. This was followed by a broad layer of FG on the raised areas. I then tried blending them together, first with a 50/50 mix, and then changed the ratios as required to adjust the blend. (I have only just started blending…so I don’t really know what I’m doing…other than experimenting, trying to improve and then forgetting what I did).
I added a small amount of black to the TB to blend in the recesses and used Ulthuan Grey to highlight the raised areas. I then mixed FG and UG to try and blend in the UG.
For the lining of the cloaks I used MSG, leaving black in the recesses, and then added Eshin Grey and tried to transition (I hesitate to use the word blend) from Eshin, Dawnstone to Administratum Grey. I added white to the AG for the final highlights.
Thank you, I appreciate the encouragement.

Re: Rogue Traders Log: Beer, Wine & Salted Fish
With no nearby town or village the Company sets up for the night, building a small defensive perimeter.
…out of the merchandise, large barrels of Bugmans XXXXXX taken from under the nose of the stunties (not an easy job)
Fine wines from Bordeleaux, silk from Cathay (stolen from Bretonnia) and RT’s favourite salted fish from Stirland.
Crucially the paychest is placed in the middle of the defenses…as the Company will fight to the last defending it (unbreakable?).
A very large lock on the paychest
Taking a late afternoon siesta RT is rudely awoken by some loud mouth, blathering about giant birds
2...rather large birds are seen above the encampment
Shit…RT finds that one of the birds has discovered his store of salted fish
