#1 Post by sparkytrypod »

soooo... has anybody read the last wheel of time book, "a memory of light"??

what do you guys think if so?

i was glad to finally see the story end, but im not so sure if brabdon sanderson was a skilled enough writer.

now the heading has been edited, read at your own discretion!

Essentially.

Some odd bits, some not-so-odd bits. When you-know-who had what read like a Dragonball Z fight was jarring, and the "impossible pipe" is irritatingly unexplained. Similarly, some of the Mat chapters were where you could almost see the difference between Sanderson and Jordan in terms of writing and characterisation. Appropriately, however, this book carried more action in it than most of the others put together.
"Hi guys, I just want to say that for some unknown reason I dreamed the entire Lore team was on my roof last night and we were barbequing a marlin while discussing some rand stuff. It was vivid enough for me that my mother had to wake me up to stop me from mumbling and twitching, believing I was having a nightmare." ~Giladis

"Think of the Loremasters as irresponsible parents. VictorK is the one you need to talk to if you want permission for something, I'm the evil parent that says 'no' and Eldacar is your grumpy grandfather who fought in some war and is scary and authoritative." ~Ruerl Khan

"And believe me, I like my websites like I like my boyfriends: wild, free, and unlikely to give me a virus." ~Sirist

I loved it. Some bits were a bit glossed over or even a bit silly, but I thought on balance a pretty exquisite ending to one of my favourite ever fantasy series.

Tai'shar Malkier!

So...spoiler-laden discussion anybody? :D

I don't see why not since that is what the author of the thread wanted to do here.

So, yeah, about the "impossible pipe..."

Without getting into spoilers, I definitely think Sanderson is a good enough writer to do the job. In many ways he's a superior author to Jordan and managed to excise a lot of the weird mysogeny and constant over-long descriptions. That comes at the price of faster pacing at times, which can make it hard to focus on the little dramas. I don't think it hurt the narrative in aMoL though. I think RJ would have taken 16+books to have the same ending.

In regard to the impossible pipe, well that whole epilog really, was nearly word-for-word Jordan. Apparently the Editor (Jordan's widow) tweaked it just a bit. I wish Jordan had explained it a bit, but further explanations are not likely forthcoming, all things considered. Despite the idiosyncrasies, I rather enjoyed the book and I'm very glad to have an end to the story. I feel that Sanderson did a fantastic job making it all come together with Jordan's notes.

On a slightly different note... did anyone else feel the whole "Flame of Tarvallen" weave was groan worthy? I logic behind it was good, the result of the weave was awesome, but the name just kills me. It may have been the way Kate Reading read it (I listened to the audiobook), but it was kind of cheesy. If it had been anyone other than Egwene, it probably would have been fine, but it wasn't IME and IMO.

The series was still going? I gave up on it after what seemed like the 35th book. Y'know, the one where absolutely nothing happened... blah, blah. blah, knitting circles and domineering women, yet another weapon to defeat the bad guys and yet another deus ex machina to stop the good guys using it. Glad to see some action happens eventually. Might have to get it out of the library for a read.

So you gave up after book 7 or 8? In 1996 or so?

ha, ya knife of dreams/winters heart or whatever were a bit longwinded though.

it felt very rushed to me though, like an essay you would do the night before it was due in school.

lanfears ending?! wtf?!

the epilogue felt so disjointed from the rest of the book too.

as for the epic battle chapter, it was good, but if anyone remebers the battle of carhien, in one of the earlier books, you could see the battlefield in your mind, didnt really know what was going on and where things were half the time in this one.

the impossible pipe, ugh, i just dont know what to make of that. and who found rand as he exited shayol ghul? nakomi?

I heard a lot about these series but I've held off starting it because I wasn't sure it would actually be completed.
So for all of you who read it all: was it worth it? How does it compare to Song of Fire & Ice, Lord of the Rings, and other classics? I don't have much time to read, so is it worth getting invested in it?

If you don't have much time... Read the first book then stop I'd say. He gets really, really, really long winded in the middle of the series. I simply had to stop part way through Winter's Heart because I realized that I didn't care anymore.

Book 1-3: Excellent, even work as a trilogy.
Book 4-6: Lots of good bits, well worth it.
Book 7-10: Not a lot happens, a lot of building up, too much wasted space.
Boook 11: Gets back on track, good book.
Book 12-13: Sanderson takes over, I like them. More actin, things start to finish up.
Book 14: Suitable ending, mucho action. Some proper bad-ass and emotional moments.

SPOILERS AHOY

I loved Lanfear's ending. She had only been a minor player since book 5, but she always hung around. Perrin doing what had to be done with a minimum of fuss: Badass.

I thought the major plus point of Sanderson is his battle writing. Jordan did most of his as recall, such as Cairhien from Mat's point of view or Rand's, whereas Sandorson keeps it in the present, which I prefer.

The pipe... Jordan wanted it in, was left unchanged from the manuscript. It's definitely odd. Same as Nakomi. Some kind of wandering angel/sending from the creator? Whatever. The pipe might be an inkling that the true power is either safe to use or was originally from the creator and corrupted by the dark one. Neither of these things bother me and I think Aviendha's conversation with Nakomi is a strong part of the story.

As for the Flame of Tar Valon, a terrible name for a suitably amazing ending for Egwene. Not sure why crystal was involved other than creating a pretty cool grave, maybe to echo dragonmount but in a hopeful way. Killing off Taim and all the remaining Sharans was fitting for her though.

I think too little time was spent on Rand Vs Shai'tan, I think repeadedly ccoming back to their argument rather than a few visions would have been a good counterpoint to the trolloc-murderfest.

But my favourite bit was Lan's charge. I honestly thought he'd been killed off in the most beautiful way. I was genuinely delighted when he stood up holding Demandred's severed head.
