Here's what I've come up with so far. Not quite sure I'm happy with it, so feedback would be nice.
Archmage - 310pts
•Level 4
•Staff of Solidity
•Sacred Incense
•Lore of Shadows
Mage - 175pts
•Level 2
•Annulian Crystal
•Lore of High Magic
BSB - 186pts
•Banner of Sorcery
•Heavy Armour
•Barded Steed
•Shield
•Lance
28 Spearelves - 277pts
•Full Command
28 Spearelves - 277pts
•Full Command
13 Archers - 143pts
9 Shadow Warriors - 144pts
11 Silver Helms - 261pts
•Shields
•Musician
2 RBTs - 200pts
1996pts total I think. Bear in mind that I wrote this without a calculator...
Anyway, I made the list with the idea that if you debuff and thin down the enemy, Spearelves should be able to beat them in combat - no need to spend points on more expensive troops. The Helms would aim for a flank charge, but could also be put in a single rank as a screening unit if I really need one.
The Archers and Shadow Warriors are where I'd put the mages. They're both good for this IMO because you don't waste them by not getting them into combat. I'd probably put the Archmage with the Shadow Warriors for the mobility and the chance to make them stupidly hard to hit. If there's trouble, I could have him cast a spell and switch places with the L2.
The RBTs are there because I wanted something other than the Silver Helms that has save modifiers.
Thoughts?

If you want to buff in combat, taking Beasts might be better than High Magic on your level two. Making Spearelves +1S, +1T is really strong. Then you might get lucky and make your guy a dragon too!

You may need a champ in the silver helms to answer any challenges, so you don't lose your bsb to one.
Battle Standard Bearer. Don't leave home without it.

I wouldn't call that "lucky"... It would take most of my power dice to cast, probably result in a miscast, and my opponent would dispel it later and kill the mage. The problem with beasts is that there are only two good spells the way I see it - the basic spell, and Amber Spear. I'm not likely to keep that BSB within 12" of my mage, so neither of the character buffs would see much use. Curse of Anrahir seems okay, but I can't really call it good without knowing any of the casting values. How do they compare with the ones from High Magic? If you want to buff in combat, taking Beasts might be better than High Magic on your level two. Making Spearelves +1S, +1T is really strong. Then you might get lucky and make your guy a dragon too!
With High Magic on the other hand, all the spells are good, and the early ones easy to cast with the +2. Free Drain Magic as well. In a list with T3 and no ward saves, 5+ ward is generally better protection than +1T, and Shield of Saphery has better range as well, to my knowledge. The +1S is what gave me some pause.
Ah yes, I didn't think of that. I wanted full command at first, but didn't have enough points. It's expensive on the Helms...You may need a champ in the silver helms to answer any challenges, so you don't lose your bsb to one.
I could lose a Shadow Warrior, I suppose. Or an Archer, and downgrade the BSB's lance to a spear.
Edit:
How about this:
-drop 2 archers
-add SH champion
-add flaming banner on spears
