Fighting in pairs

#1 Post by Eltherion »

One of the Tactics I have noticed works well with the High Elves is using your units in pairs.

Some of the combos I have used include the following.

Double Charges
Lion & Tiranoc
SM's & Lion Chariot/Tiranoc
DP's & Lion Chariot
DP's & Tiranoc

Bait & Flee + counter charge
Eagle or Tiranoc & DP's Eagle/Tiranoc baits or redirects, then DP's counter charge (careful placement of DP's needed)
Eagle or Tiranoc & Lion Chariot
Archers flee though SM's (with Standard of Balance, SM's take the charge)

RBT Escorts
Usually archers in 2 ranks on a hill possibly with a noble
Sometimes a chariot nearby or SM's to protect the RBT
Shadow warriors nearby

7th Ed High Elves 18 : 9 : 4 Bargle Con I, Best General, 3rd Overall
New High Elf Book 16 : 1 : 5 Bargle Con II, 2nd Overall, Conviction 2nd Overall & Best Sportsman

i've actually found you can use an eagle to force multiple units to charge or do nothing often meaning one eagle can set up 2/3 charges.

Yeah, eagles are brilliant for annoying units and requiring them to charge you. It's the reason I always take one in a game, even if I know thy'll be few war machines.

Ah, see, this is where I draw the line. I think there is diminishing returns on a second eagle in any game short of 3k. It's like taking a forth bolt thrower. It's nice but you've already got something which will do 90% of the job already, why spend more points?

I sometimes put my lion chariot to the side of and slightly behind phoenix guard. Phoenix guard take a charge and don't die, next turn the chariot charges in.

Fighting in pairs works great and it is one of the basics in the strategy that I'm using. Tiranoc Chariots are golden in this since they are fast and add some punch to other units. 2 of them is included in just about every list that I make. Dragon Princes are of course a must as well, as are Great Eagles.
I usually try to deploy something like this:

unit - chariot - unit - chariot - unit

as my main line. That way every unit can support another.

That's what I used to think but I've found No2 very useful against RBT and simply for annoying a separate sector of the enemy line.

Indeed, this is one of the thing that chariots are brilliant at. You can maximize an elite infantry unit in base contact with the opponent, and have the chariot contribute a small frontage, doing full damage while insulating it from return attacks. Very nice, and probably even better once 8th edition rolls around.

We had a four way game of Warbands on the weekend. I frontal charged a unit of 20 Saurus with 10 LSG and simultaneously flank charged with a lion chariot. He lost too many warriors to fight back, fled and was overrun. A highly rewarding experience. He completely stayed away from me in the second game, chosing to attack Ogres instead.
