It reads like a fun game. Also like you have a lot to learn still. Lot lot read like things you would do in WH, which probably don't translate 1-on-1 to kings of war. But still great fun. And you can't really beat a couple of spearmen hordes in terms of looks :) Having some extra chaff on the table would go a long way to having more board control I think. But that could also be down to the points size, where 1500 pts isn't enough to get a 'full' army on the table. It isn't in WH at least, which leads to half armies below 1750 pts or so.

Yeah, it was fun. We both decided to try out hordes and both of us tried out a flying character, so there was a lot of learning in that already. I feel I am slowly dissociating Warhammer tactics to Kings of War thinking, but here is some way to go still. Being a hobby butterfly and system-hopping does not make this easier. :D

Would you mind pointing anything in particular you notice? It would be interesting for us to hear what others would suggest or do differently.

Thanks for reading!

Working on some Eagles (the Lord of the Ring variant), and also on the oldie White Lion unit. It was time to take a break so I painted this Bad Squiddo Games Shieldmaiden Champion. Quite a cool mini! Click to get to my blog post with a few thoughts on the mini if you're wondering what my impression of the company is.

Nice model, I agree good for LOTR. Good contrast between the armour and the more colourful bits.

A very lovely model. It really fits into the LoTR range. If you wouldn't have said anything about which company made it I would have simply assumed it was a GW mini I didn't know yet (not unlikely for the LoTR models). And you really did it justice with the paint scheme. Somehow LoTR models (and as such, this model as well), really lend themselves to realistic colour schemes. Probably due to the more realistic scale.

Yeah, it fits superbly well - especially with Éowyn!

I used to go Skorched brown, Beastial Brown, Devlan Mud, (Beastial Brown) Snakebite Leather. Nowadays its Rhinox Hide, Mournfang Brown, Earthshade and (Mournfang again) Vallejo Model Yellow Brown. I'd like a smaller step between the Vallejo and Mournfang though.

In related news, I got hold of an old bolt thrower - and pepped by the BYOL events people posted on I painted it up straight away. Its getting there this oldie army! 8) (Click the image to see more close-ups on my blog.)

I love the "screaming" bold colours, with the bright blue and red. Only a HE would consider wearing something like that to a battlefield...

I got the idea while reading (Raymond E. Feists magician series). An "alien" force there was described wearing these bold colours and then I had to roll with that. Before that it was a wintery cold, mostly white colours scheme for me. Its good to be an elf this way :)

In more eerie colours, there's been more Kings of War going around. But now its been a bunch of dead heads running amok on some druchii scum (figured one or two here, might enjoy the slaughter - either way the game goes):

Unfortunately time is scarce, but I hope to get at least one batrep written in the early week.

I met this guy on the battle fields that day, though. He was all done but based, and had never gotten a proper introduction. Now is the perfect time!

Now I finally got around to finishing the first of my two 7th edition BatReps (with 6th ed army books). It was a really good time we had going back to where we started. Neither of us was really fond of the feel of 8th ed. (That said I liked the different ways to play that came.) Remembering different pieces, and details from games. Probably not very tactical playing from either of us, but it didn't matter. In the end, after the second game, we even decided to schedule a rematch! :)

Thanks for that, great stuff!

Both the lists were friendly, though I feel the Beasts of Chaos book was a bit stronger than 6th edition High Elves. As you said, you were the one able to get the key charges in. The Spears had their static res augmented by Chariot killing power while the Dragon Princes benefited from their Lord's attacks. From what I remember, Beasts often depended on getting their ambush right.

Well played!

Yeah, friendly is how we two roll. Friendly is basically turning anything you paint valid, and I know the Beastman collects only that way. Now that we both know how the game works I feel I dare amp up the power some too and I even got a few messages saying he was pepped to add stuff to his army (warhounds, which I personally think he had sorely missed.) Thanks for reading!
RE.Lee wrote:Nice report!

Thanks! No it would definitely not. :D I had to do the math quickly in my head before I charged now already. And then I realised it came down rather closely to the D6 for impact hits. I did have the second line of Swordmasters (foolishly placed *self-face palm*) ready to counter then. In the end the Beastmen helped out as well by botching their attacks - in both combats :D

There's still a bunch of photos asking to be written together for a second one. :o

On the weekend we fought some more Kings of War in the Edge of the Abyss campaign, so I prioritised writing this battle report to be able to report it on the campaign site. A Battle to End It All, a multiplayer clash between the Forces of Good (repped by Forces of Nature and Dwarfs) and the Forces of Evil (repped by the Undead and the Twilight Kin). We even got our Resident Dwarf (that's a top selling game title!) to join in!

Much more competitive than the last game, wasn’t it? Things got messy and confused, which I guess is appropriate for Beasts! Impressed with the Prince’s rush forwards, heroic stuff! I quite liked the HE deployment. Where you got 2 on 1 fights, these seemed to go well, 1 on 1 not so much.

Yeah, it was quite a difference that the small changes did. Pimping a character and shaving some points for another chariot. We immensely enjoy the dynamic games we get with these rules!

The closer the better! :) I think they do correctly get marks here. This is the book to be paired with Hordes of Chaos, where the general changes which units are Core or Special choices - Mortal, Daemon or Beast.

I've been beating around the fantasy bushes on the painting table for a while. Much because of a fling to the future that looks like these. (Click pictures to see a few more pics of each on my blog.) But I need to get back to fantasy soon. I am planning the X-mas special mini-campaign to be set in Mantica this year, rather than the usual 40k world. I am currently trying to come up with a set of three scenarios that are varied and are Wintery or Yule-y. Let's see where that goes! :)

Old School!

I remember stuff appearing in White Dwarf including the Screamer Killer (later Carnifex) possibly even before 2nd Edition. Is the Warrior here of that vintage?

It is! From what I've seen these appeared in various boxed games in the mid 90s. Got a metal one from the same time on the painting table right now - those seem to stylistically fit better with the rest of the range from that time. That old screamer killer is a funny one. :D

I've been scheming every year do a bit of a wintery/christmassy mini-campaign. This year, instead of chasing the ork Boss Mek Santa Klawz I take our group to Mantica. Take a look if you want to have some themed fun this season (I'm bit early I know, but its so so we can schedule it all). :) (Click image to get to my blog with fluff and the scenarios, and soon, the bat reps.)

Looks fun. Great idea! And I think that with very little changes these rules can be used in other systems as well. Perhaps it's something for RE.Lee, who always likes a fun scenario. And I might just see if I can plan a similar game with my regular opponent.

Kings of War counts victory point by per cent, so its easy to come up with something a bit different. But we'll have to see how it all turns out :)
Thanks, its accidentally almost identical to the vanilla/studio army. So no out of the box thinking there - its my colour scheme for my take on the undeadlies as well :o

I think so too. To the point that I almost added tweaks to make it compatible with other systems as well. :) For WHFB/t9A the Kramus could simply be any basic hero character - maybe an Empire captain or similar. 40k as well some mid tier character as well. Age of Sigmar could be a bit more tricky, as the Kramus could be shot away so easily. But as scoring is % of points its wildly generic.Scoring objective is also fixed.

Dropfleet Commander could be a bit more tricky to motivate, but then the invasion could be of a Santa Planet :d

Fun game. At the deployment I already thought that the Twilight Kin army would be reasonably easy to split in a left and right flank. And that if you could simply hold up one side of the army then you could deal with both halves separately. That house and the crossbow deployment really helped there I think.

Looking forward to the next battle. Goblins rock!
