Those online campaigns were crazy.

Like the time we found out one guy "narmo?" Had a literal legion of alt accounts.

Or the time the Asur faction had this whole strategy to box the dawi in whilst doing it Ricold "teleported" them away trying to be helpful but had half the people on the website acting like our most beloved lore master was a great betrayer.

As the title suggests. I just checked, no posts of me remaining younger than 6 years ago. I must have visited at some point in the meantime, but still.

Cool to see that some of the really old members are still here though. (Tahl, for example)

Anyway, I was thinking of trying my hand at a bit of AoS, and what I've read from Swordmaster I should really get back into KoW. Played a few games but it kind of stopped there.

I can't bear the crying and screaming coming out of my high-elf army-case.... I plan to visit more regularly from now on.

Thanks! Yep, plus my HE are the only mini's painted to a decent standard, so it would be a shame to keep them locked up from now on.

There is a lot of choice now!

Well, there's 2 choices as far as I'm concerned. AoS or KoW. 8th is just not played anymore in my area, and while 9th sounded like a good idea I think they made a total crapfest of it and I have very little faith in a community-run game system like this. Without model support both systems are bound to die out in the next 4 years IMO. But I hope I'm wrong!

Mordheim is also still around. Sort of... It could work. But I do think they will slowly need to get more 'professional' to keep it going. They have some momentum. But they indeed need modelling support to keep it going. And to do that they should start working with modelling companies. So, they need to start communicating with those companies and get that moving. Then if they can invent a new model and get a company to make a model for it then they have proven it's a viable game and they can keep moving forward.

As it stands now, I personally think it's still too much we're old school warhammer but better because we have more rules...

On the plus side they have the ETC structure. A lot of connected events, networking etc were already in place for Warhammer and they've inherited that. Most tournament players in England (50%+) at least who didn't like AoS just kept playing 8th. Until 9th Age gained traction when most migrated to that.

I thought there was some of that going on? I also feel models are not a huge issue, especially for 8th edition. GW still sells much of the previous ranges and Ebay is a big resource. Most of all though, many companies make generic fantasy models that fit.

At the moment, no. But moving forward, they might want to start introducing new units. After all, one "complaint" you often saw as an edition progressed was that the game got stale and that GW should shake things up. Revamping the rules can only go so far. At some point people will want new toys to play with. And to be able to introduce the equivalent of an Arachnarok (or other original model) they need to work together with a modelling company.

Also, as things move forward, GW model line will start diverging more and more from T9A. That's something to factor in. Especially when it comes to bringing in new players. Which is needed to keep the game alive.

There's a difference between 8th Edition and 9th Age here I think. Players of the former are likely to be happier using existing rules and models, considering there are many units and indeed armies to try. Also, crucially, these players tend to be fairly casual. 9th Age players on the other hand are usually more focused and competitive. The very fact that they chose to support a new game rather than 8th suggests that fresh rules and models may be important to them. I do believe that new units they come up could largely be represented by existing models, perhaps converted, as scale is not such an issue compared with in AoS.
Prince of Spires wrote:Especially when it comes to bringing in new players.
One of the ETC guys made the point that in the UK for example, new players often came through GW's shops historically because these used to host regular gaming and be very welcoming, though that may have lessened with one-man stores. But many players, especially on the Continent, came into the game via clubs, where they would tend to play what the majority of the members were playing and learn a lot from those guys, including about other ways to source figures. I guess social media will be increasingly important going forward. I believe GW are active there and AoS as a whole has a strong Twitter presence. Even the 8th edition tournament I just played was primarily promoted on Facebook.

Join the fun that is Oldhammer. As we've gone back to it more seriously and have seen others doing the same I wonder why I ever made the move to 4th. Unless you want "balance" or play in competitive fashion. In that case stay away. So far we've just done rather small games (large armies are out of style with us currently). But the thing about 3rd is that is scales down (or up) as well (or poorly) as you make it.

Like I said, I hope I'm wrong. And I realize that a lot of work from a lot of good people was put in to making 9th. Bravo!

However, as I read 9th I could not suppress the feeling that it was just 8th edition with fan-boy bits stuck on. I'm not saying it is a bad system in general, but it is totally not what I would have liked to see, namely a streamlined game that took only the best from 8 editions worth of warhammer and cut out all the useless crap. It does takes some of the best, but doesn't cut out the crap, and sticks on additional stuff that people think is 'fun' but in the end just makes it more complex. To make a game like this you need a team of 3-5 people max, not a community. The same reason why democracy doesn't work: too many opinions muck everything up.
