Thor 2... Wut.

#1 Post by Wrathbaby »

So, I can't help but noticing how the villain in Thor 2 is set to be Malekith the Accursed. And he's leading an army of dark elves... e_e

Someone, somewhere, has some explaining to do.

Why is there explaining needed?
Malekith the Accursed is a supervillain in the Marvel Universe. He is ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, and has come into conflict with Thor.
If you're meaning because the Dark Elves in Warhammer have the same guy, Marvel introduced the Character in 1984, which I think puts them ahead of the curve since Fantasy came out in 1983, and the armies were not the refined forces they are now for a couple years.

I would very much appreciate a book reference for this. I was so far unable to find one and Norse mythology is something that interests me.

Same, I did some research on the etymology of the word Malekith when I found out about Thor 2 villain and the best I could find was
Male = evil in Latin (didn't bother to find confirmationn)
kith = because it sounded cool together.

So yeah.

I do not believe he is an actual character from Mythology, as Marvel puts him as ruler of Svatelfheim, but norse Mytholgy doesn't delve into the rulers there, merely the races that dwell in that realm. Frey is the God of the Elves, but that isn't here nor there.

That was my conclusion also, but I do not know everything about Norse mythology and it is possible there is some reference somewhere.
The thing that speaks against Malekith being an actual mythological character is that these álfar are not even neccessarily evil in the mythology.

So yeah.
Malum (n.) is indeed the Latin word for evil (Malus is masculine adjective meaning "evil" btw).

Could be derived from malechite, and in Warhammer's case, a portmanteau of malevolent kith. Certainly not unique:

The wicked fairy was aptly named "Maleficent" (an adjective which means "doing evil or harm"). It also has the appearance of being a portmanteau of malevolent and magnificent.
