Xp virus has locked me out of everything. Only option so far is back up data and re install.
Now I was thinking that maybe if I do a widows upgrade(xp to windows 7). That I could install a freash OS and keep my data and bypass the virus.
Issue came when my system finished updates and did its forced restart.
Its been awhile last time I did an install of an OS. I remember it asking the question of do u want to keep your old data?
Thoughts?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and running a System Restore? It will will roll your system back to a previous point in time (provided you have a valid restore point) without affecting your files. It will remove any applications that were installed between the present day and the restore point, but that is what makes the virus inactive. Once the restore is complete, you can run a virus scanner to remove the problem.
Do you have an XP install disc? If so, you can boot from it and run System Restore (if Safe Mode didn't work)?
In regard to the upgrade option, any upgrade that does not wipe your personal files is not a good idea because it is not likely to remove the virus. A clean upgrade is not really an upgrade from a files stand point. Without going into exhaustive details, a clean install of the new OS would be your best bet, but you would need to backup your personal files first.

Virus has locked me out of all the option. I have to fight just to get into some of the option. Its slowly locking everything out. I talked with multi pros and all have said save data wipe reinstalll.. Going to play around agian and see if I can get into safe mood. It keeps hard starting ie shut down and restart before I have a chance.

A clean install is sure method for clearing the virus. However, it is not your only option. Booting from the install disk and using the Repair options to start system restore will completely circumvent the virus (unless it is a BIOS virus, in which case you have serious problems that no amount of reinstalling will fix). Try safe mode first though as it is a much easier option.
