US Midwest housing
For years now I have been watching tornados trash peoples homes and property and I just come to terms why they continue building homes out of those flimsy materials, why don't they build proper homes out of stone and brick?
Re: US Midwest housing
Building costs?
Also, brick houses do blow down, and they can cause a lot more damage and are more difficult to clear/rebuild.

Part building cost and part the nature of tornadoes. it's like building for earthquakes here in Southern California. At a certain point the engineering/construction costs to protect against truly devastating earthquakes or tornadoes makes the building too expensive for little return. The likelihood of being hit by an F4 or F5 tornado is relatively low, and there isn't much you can do for a direct hit of any strength tornado. Best to hide in your basement and survive.

Re: US Midwest housing
I always wondered why people didn't build more underground housing to protect against tornadoes - the entire midwest could look like the shire! :3

A shire would be much safer than a trailer park!!

The chance of your house being hit by a cat3+ tornado are like 1/1,000,000 even if you live in Iowa or whatever. Better to build a beautiful house and a super strong bomb shelter to hide in!
And if The Big One comes it won't matter what you build your house out of.

Heh. I'm the right shade of elf flesh.. They don't even bother asking where I am from. Instead I get the lazy "move along..", accompanied by a hand wave.Allerion wrote:You live in SD? watch out, border patrol is checking green cards....Teledor wrote:A shire would be much safer than a trailer park!!

Cost. A really strong stone house is expensive. The more common brick/stone house is really wood structure and costs a lot less than a true stone building. Land is also cheap is the non-urban areas that you often hear about tornados devastating, so there is less incentive to put an expensive house on the property.Giladis wrote:why don't they build proper homes out of stone and brick?
