So for me, I haven't posted in here in a loooooooooong time, I think a quick update is in order. In the past 9 months, I've received 2 promotions at work and I am currently in the process of buying a small house (my first one). Hopefully a 3rd promotion will be coming within the next year and the only thing I need for this new house is to find a decent roommate who is capable of making the monthly rent.

Dude, Loki, that's the top of the pops right there. Home ownership is quite honestly one of those things that I look forward to as well. Nice work, and I hope that promotion goes through for you!

Haha thanks Maddo. I was surprised at how affordable buying a house really is. As for the promotion, its more of a waiting til someone else above me moves higher so I can move into that spot.

This is my first post in the Jacuzzi. Where to start really is what I am asking myself.

Lets see...hmm...well I am 24, Married, own 2 cars, renting to own our place, longest serving member in the area for my company and seriously under paid...allow me to clarify this last part:

I work for at a hospital with a security company hired by the health care system. I am the longest serving Officer in an area bigger than New York City...I only work nights, and I get paid a crappy $16/hour...the guys at McDonalds make more than me! I have been working my site for 15 months and have established a relationship with the staff that was none existent before I started working here. I put my life on the line as I am the first person a patient who is coming into the Emergency department sees...if they have a gun or a knife, I am the one who will be injured, not the staff.

now that my venting is done, I have to say that I feel somewhat better, but still not 100%. oh well...someone has to be the B**** I guess and that someone is me...

The only problem with that is I would only see a $0.50 raise...I have seen 2 raises so far, started at $15. They have been told by the client that I am one of the best Officers they have had at my home site...my boss wont even get back to me on matters of training so that I can advance to the Office as a trainer or Client Services Manager...

I so would! They would say "OK, quit then. We wont pay you that because no one else gets that much." I will be asking for at least another $1/hour though. Gas is insane here! I spend about $100 every 2 weeks on gas to get to work...its about 70Kms round trip

So, while everything tends to go well in my everyday life with work and the house and things of that nature, it seems that fate saves all the drama for my love life =P Right now, my gf is having a lot of issues (for lack of a better word that doesn't reveal too much) and the hardest thing is that it seems that the best decision would be for us not to be together until she gets her life in better order. A decision both of us are having trouble accepting.

In Finland the tax office refunds the gas you use for going to work :? . Then again it costs like 1,7 euros a litre (a gallon is 3,6 litres).

I survive with 200 euros a month in a country with the most expensive food in the world. Then again I'm single.

Really, being in a union was awesome. Misa love collective bargains!

Now that I'm my own boss I realise how easy I had it back then. And I wasn't even in one of the strongest unions around (the biggest and strongest is the transport one).

I think it all depends on what job you're in if a union is worth it. Nothing would suck more in forming a union, going through the bargaining process, and ending up with a $0.15 an hour increase, while having to pay yearly union dues. I'm against them in my own company, but then we get treated fairly well.

Of course you're against it. Because you're silly libertarian ;)

^ Its true, the company i work for gives great benefits, so there is no need for a union.

Unions in my opinion just cause way to many problems, forcing your employer to give you stuff is a terrible idea as you can kiss any chance of good employee/employer relations goodbye.

You gotta be kidding. Look at how big businesses treat employees in countries that dont have unions. You cannot believe that thats a good thing, or that if the west never unionized, it would be any different here. If your company treats you well without unionizing- great, dont unionize, since theres no need for it. Just keep in mind that everybody is not so lucky to work for a company that doesnt treat them like shit.

Coulda swore we are talking about countries that have laws in place to protect employee rights outside of unions... I mean your company can't really treat you like shit in first world countries as you are protected, unless employees are just complaining because their mcdonalds job doesn't provide full medical coverage and other great benefits that their friend who became a doctor has.

If you are refering to 3rd world countries, i hardly think a union would protect the workers from being beaten and treated like shit for working too slow or not doing a good job as those problems are far beyond a simple union formation to be fixed.

I work in a grocery store, without a union, and I have better medical benefits than almost everyone I know. And I pay less than $10 a week.

And I live in a country which gives next-to-free medical coverage to all it's citizens :D . Also, there are like 3 unions which handle the things for like 90% of all workforce in the country :D . Oh, and universities etc. are free :D

Let me quote wikipedia:

"With the best educational system in Europe,[9][10] Finland has recently ranked as one of the world's most peaceful, competitive and livable countries.[11][12][13][14] In April 2012, Finland was ranked 2nd in Gross National Happiness - GNH under World Happiness report published by the earth institute."
