Direction of breaking from combat?

#1 Post by Ferny »

I've always played that if/when you break you rotate your unit 180 degrees and flee directly backwards from where you were. However one of my opponents has been playing that you flee centre to centre (and I think specifically, centre of each unit, not centre of the front ranks). Is this correct?

When you break from combat you turn directly away (your now back rank is along enemy's front rank before the flee move is done) from the largest enemy unit and go forward. You don't run center to center from combat, that's the case in regards to panic/terror/flee reaction.

Your opponent is correct; it's center-to-center (this means your units will overlap a bit during the move--that's fine.

At least I believe that's true.

Big rule book faq says directly away means center to center. References p57 explicitly to mean center to center.

I think the easiest way to settle a question once an for all is to refer to the books:

BRB:
“To resolve the flee move, turn the unit around about its centre so that it is facing directly away from the enemy unit (ignoring the enemy unit).”
"You may find that this involves the fleeing unit turning so that it overlaps one or more other units in the fight. If this happens, don't worry. Simply estimate the unit's new position as best you can by holding it above the rest of the units in the fight — it'll only be there for a moment before making its flee move, after all!"

FAQ:
"Q: When a unit flees ‘directly away’ from another, does this mean
that you turn the unit about its centre, so that it will flee directly
away from the centre of the unit it is fleeing from? (p57)
A: Yes."

I have always played it as it will do exact 180 degree turn and flee. But after seeing the BRB entry and FAQ it is clearly from the center point to center. That makes charging with a horde and aligning it more interesting.

Ranks, not models. (though it is usually the same thing...)
