The Arrow of Kurnous

#1 Post by Tatro43 »

Just played against Wood Elves and a question came up right at the beginning of the game.
He targets my Lvl 4 Arch Mage in my unit with the BOTWD with his Arrow of Kurnous. Rules say, he gets shot before any turns start with a strength 3 hit and no AS.
Ok, I'm fine with that, but in the book on page 37 in the paragraph "Enchanted Arrows", it says in the last sentence "all shooting attacks made with enchanted arrows count as having been made with magic attacks."
I argued that the Arrow of Kurnous had to be an enchanted arrow, and I should get the +2 ward. We rolled off and I got the ward, but I'm still wondering if I'm right.

Thoughts??? :?:

I'd argue that no you don't get the wardsave.

The Arrow Kurnous is not listed under the enchanted arrrows section and nor does it say in it's profile that this is a magical attack. Think of it more like a special rule than a magic item.

Is it a magic item? Hits from magic items are magical attacks.
Ah, Floorhammer. A time honored tradition. Sadly, I no longer play since my brother tripped and right-angled the spears of a 15-man regiment.

The wording is such that it's a special rule. It's largely to reflect the fluff that it's traditional for the wood elves not to launch themselves into battle until their leader, or one of his captains, has loosed a shot at the heart of the enemy leader. No magic arrow, just skill and tradition. It's all in the last paragraph of the Highborn of Athel Loren profile.

That's a freakin' awesome rule.

I for one, will be proud not to take BotWD saves against it :)

Daemon Princes with Charmed Shield may be slightly less sanguine.

Wow, my mind is blown! I hadn't even thought about that yet! =D> Sadly the wood elves don't have a lot of good multiple wound shooting to follow up with though. Still a nice trick for a 2v2 though.

Arrow of Kurnous isn't rulewise magical, so I would say no for the BotWD

As charmed shield work against attacks that causes hits, and this attack does it would invoke the 2+ roll and expire the shield.

Question. Do you need to roll "to-hit" in order for it to be considered a "hit" that activates the charmed shield or as long as the description says the wound "strength 3 hit" to activate it?

This doesn't answer the question directly, but it helps unravel the question

From BRB fag april 2013:

Q: If a character equipped with the Charmed Shield sufers a
Wound from an attack that doesn’t specifically cause hits (such as
from the Lore of Death’s Spirit Leech, or a Tomb Banshee’s
Ghostly Howl), can he still attempt to discount the first Wound
from such an attack on a 2+? (Reference)
A: No. The Charmed Shield only works against attacks
that cause hits.

I would say that if something says that it causes str X hit, it is an attack that causes hits. It can be viewed as automatic hit. Similarly as magic missiles. Also it is generally approved that charmed shield works against cannon shot

They do however have Amber Spear, which would otherwise have to wait until a shooting phase had stripped the Shield.
