Book of Hoeth v. Ring of Hotek

#1 Post by Maedil »

Quick question;

Say that a level 4 with the Book of Hoeth casts a spell at a unit containing a Dark Elf character wearing the Ring of Hotek. The first roll comes out as 1,1, 4 and 5, meeting the casting requirements. Now, the Ring of Hotek states that a roll of double 1's is considered a miscast. However, the High Elf player chooses to reroll one of the 1's, and gets a 3. Now there is no double 1.

Is it the first or second roll that is that you check against the Ring of Hotek? What is considered a roll of the purposes of the item? Both, or just the last (final roll if you will)?

Well it does say "roll of a double 1", so I would say miscast on the natural roll and then the mage gets to re-roll it via the book.

Only the reroll counts for ring of hotek. It works the same way for irresistible (and for things like poison attacks that reroll to hit, etc)

The casting roll isn't finished until the after the reroll. So only the reroll value stands. Though it perhaps depends a bit on the wording of the ring of hotek. If it talks about the natural roll then it can become a bit different.

The wording is "on a roll of double 1, as well as double 6".

As far as I can tell the main rulebook what happens in such "re-roll scenarios" such as the Book of Hoeth, but to me it seems like it implies a roll you check against after the spell is cast and the dispel-subphase startes. Same as with the Sac Dagger triggering a miscast after the other dice are cast.

I would say you check after the reroll too. Seems to be the answer more in line with how other similar effects are checked. Otherwise you would run on your first failed break test and suddenly decide to come back around on your succesfull reroll?
