Tie-Breakers in Tournaments & Leagues

#1 Post by tessenjutsu »

Hello everyone! :)

My Escalation League had playoffs last night wherein the top 6 players competed for cash prizes. In the first round, there was a tied game with one player being 45 points above the other player, but since the playoffs had to keep progressing, a tie-breaker had to be used. The league organizer had no ideas on how it should be done, so it came down to a simple D6 roll-off (wherein one of the players rolled a 6 :P).

I'm just curious how tie breakers are usually done in tournament-style settings. Is there truly a fair way to judge these games?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses! :D

Most tournament tie breakers I've seen were some mix of battle points, appearance, sportsmanship. You could also go by comp or strength of schedule if you have that data in your league. Of course that was meant for the tourney as a whole, where such things are scored. In a single elimination event I'm not sure what would be best, probably adjust the scoring so there is no draw possible. Straight up battle points, even one more that your opponent counts as a win. Or maybe an objective for each game so there will always be a winner, even if battle points are tied. In any case it's best practice to establish tie breakers before hand so players can allow for that possibility when writing lists and playing the event.

The most common thing I`ve seen is most battle points, followed by victory points, followed by biggest victory. I`ve never seen VPs been precisely equal so the last part hasn`t really come into play.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are Battle Points?

Most tournaments (like ETC, Swedish) use a 0-20 Battle Point system whereby compare the VP between the 2 armies and see how much BP you get respectively.

I'll use ETC
0-150 10-10
151-300 11-9
301-450 12-8
451-600 13-7
601-750 14-6
751-900 15-5
901-1050 16-4
1051-1200 17-3
1201-1350 18-2
1351-1500 19-1
1500+ 20-0

So essentially if i beat my opponent I I got 1500 VPs and he got 876 VPs; the difference between us is 624. Therefore I would get 14 BP while my opponents get 6 BP
