If you could choose any, what allied units would you have?

The way my friend and I play, we can include any allies - if it's just a couple of units, we include them out of our main points allowance (so a core empire unit is counted from our core allowance), or if we decde to have an allied army (say 1000pts or more) we make up the main army and small allied army separately, each according to their own points allowances.

So, my question to you is, given a completely free choice (from the forces of order at least) what units would you choose to bolster areas that high elves lack?

At the moment I just have some bits and pieces, the bretonnians from 5th, for example, and a few wood elf and empire bits

The thing I find most useful are my pair of great cannons - high elves certainly lack a hard hitting war machine - but I have the option to buy anything, so im interested what you guys think would be the most useful?

I agree on cannons. I wouldn't mind some doom-fire warlocks as well.

Other then that, skaven slaves or cannons are pretty obvious choices.

Steam tank or one of the (bargain-priced) chariot cannons (Daemon/Ogre) would probably be frequently picked

Even the option to pick the RBTs in special section (from the DE book) would be extremely convenient for HE.

Warlocks would be good too, and so would be the fast-cav horsr mount option for our characters (a la DE/WE)

But I would scratch build some form of magic unleashing warmachine. Have a mage out the back, channeling aetheric energy into the machine.

Of course, a lot of this would be dependent on what list we are running but for myself:
DE special choice RBT's frees up dble Frosty and the rest of my Rare points go one Waywatchers.

This might even be possible with future End Times releases (not that I cared to play with the other ET rule sets.)

what about 4 reaper bolt throwers in an army that already has 4 eagle claw bolt throwers? also considering this due to the speculation on a unified elf army fighting monster characters... (or 16 total in a grand army...)

I was thinking the same thing. 9 RBT (4 special, 4 rare and alith anar), load up on archers, reavers and sisters and you have a decent ranged output. Even more so if you add in a loremaster.

the one thing our army really lacks--great core infantry. So maybe Chaos Warriors? except they're so slow... I need something to complement my cavalry, skycutters, and frostheart.

So probably I want Ironguts. With all the target saturation they shouldn't need to worry too much about shooting.

So I'd take something like:

mounted prince: 300
mounted achmage: 300
mounted BSB: 150

12 ironguts: 550
reavers: 100

12 Dragon Princes: 450
3x skycutter: 300

frostheart: 240
eagle: 50
eagle: 50

or something.

Take a Saurus Oldblood with a +S magic weapon and fly. Pick off all those knights we usually have trouble with.

empire cannons with engineer for those all incredibly annoying rerolls including hellblaster
Steam tanks
Demi gryphs
And then a couple of phoenixs and obviously PG or WL
