BSB: Mounted or Unmounted in infantry units

I'm kind of torn. I'm probably just making mistakes, but whenever my BSB has gotten into combat lately on foot (granted, I'm using the old Loec + Reaver Bow build), even in the flanks sometimes my opponents will just make their 3 attacks into my BSB and kill him. I'm thinking of running him on a barded steed with Helm of Fortune and 5+ ward save just to make sure he doesn't die because the BSB is just so darn important now. I am concerned with losing the Lookout Sir, but hopefully careful positioning against cannons and the re-rollable armor + ward will protect against stone throwers.

What careful positioning? A cannon goes through everything but "impassable terrain like the edge of a hill". But if the cannon is on a hill it will probably get true line of sight. Unfortunately my cool mounted bsb is now the banner bearer for my dragon prince unit and I am making a new one on foot. Also this means the cookie cutter build of GW, Armor of Caledor, BSB and if you feel the need the guardian phoenix, is by far the best.

Don't give your BSB the reaver bow would be my solution. If he's dying more than not, stick him with the Armour of Caledor for the 2+ save. I think I will continue to run mine mounted because I like the ability to move him quickly from unit to unit.

Yeah, I meant trying to hide him behind units. I try to save Armor of Caledor for my Prince, but I can't figure out any safe way to run him other than in a cavalry unit (oh chariot, how short I knew thee), so yeah, it'll probably be stuck on the BSB.

a mounted BSB is actually pretty good with cannons. you wander him up for the first couple of turns inside a unit of infantry, then you charge him out.
