Stardragon build?

#1 Post by Sturen »

I've heard lots of people mentioning the "Star Dragon Build". What is this build, I'm guessing it includes of prince on Star dragon (duh) with armour of caledor but what else is in it and more importantly why is each thing taken?

Thanks :)

The 'standard' build is;

Armour of Caledor and Vambraces of a Defence, for a 2+ rerollabl As and 4+ Ws + making the entire modell immune to flaming.

Lance or Halberd (use whatever suits your playstyle.)

Gem of Courage or Amulet of Light. (Do you want a improve your chances of not breaking after some bad rolling, or do you want magical attacks?)

This is actually what I call the defensive standard set-up.
Another classic set-up is: StarLance,Talisman of Loec, Armour of caledor and Sacred Incense (5+ ward save)
This last one, you surely understood, is much more combat and challenge oriented(killing opponent general).

Now all we need is 150 point magic allowance and we cover both bases.

Problem with the stardragon is that whichever build you take you suffer. If the opponent has some sort of uber lord, and you've got the defensive build, you suffer because the dragon is your best bet at killing it. If your opponent has lots of shooting, the combat build suffers. Play to your local metagame, if theres lots of shooting, the rerolls are needed, if theres lots of monsters, take the starlance.

About the offensive build. Helm of Fortune is a better choice. 3+ with reroll is better than 2+.

If you don't already have it someplace else in the army, then yes, it is.

i generally run a bit of both i take the star lance and the vammies of defence and take normal heavy armour and shield on a star dragon of course. comes out at something like 2+? rerollable armour save with a 4+ ward save then you get 4 S7 attacks on the charge with no armour saves.

Against a Strength 5 hit, you only have a 5 in 24 chance of dying.

That's a 4+ re-rollable armour save. And why normal heavy armour instead of the oh-so-brilliant dragon armour?

A good points denial lord choice is Reaver Bow, Radiant Gem, Jewel of the Dusk and dragon armour + shield + lance on a star dragon. Takes part in all the phases without risking it's points in close combat and still generates wounds in close combat if required.

yea thats what i meant by heavy armour seeing as DA pretty much is heavy armour but with some benefits.

doesnt he get +1 to the armour save seeing as he is mounted(its still only 3+ then)?

No, you only get +1 armour save from mounts with 1 wound (often referred to as steeds). A dragon doesn't give you any armour save, but it reduces shooting hits against the prince through randomisation.

Thnx :)

I prefer the defensive build as I hate characters dieing :D and you've got a dragon which is pretty much the best possible offensive :)

One more question though ;)

Is a archmage/Teclis build better?

From the board's resident archmage user: yes, definitely.

Teclis is miles better, an archmage only slightly so.

haha is teclis better, its like comparing a nice chardonnay to a good Merlot.

One will dominate the magic phase, the other will dominate the combat phase. They are very different beasts, and have very different weaknesses.

Teclis doesn't like getting charged and your Dragon doesn't like teclis (IF beast cowers will slow him down a bit)

ps I like teclis better too

At lower costed games, it's an either/or proposition, and will effect your overall strategy and tactics - so either Star Dragon and Blitzkrieg, or Teclis and Sitzkrieg.

I've found that a Star Dragon is slightly more powerful than an archmage in the matchups that matter (Daemons, VC, Dark Elves, Lizards, and Warriors of Chaos). Teclis is more powerful than the Star Dragon in all of those except Dark Elves assuming they have the ring of hotek.
