Can't wait to see your phoenix ! I'm sure it'll look great.
There's so many way you can paint it, I think I'd spend more time thinking about the colour scheme than actually painting it. I'm wondering what you chose.

Also keep us updated on the phoenix casting, I might be interested to open a circus

The phoenix kit is indeed a great source of extra bits. There's loads of options for creating more in there. After making my frostheart I kitbashed a flamespire with the left over bits and parts of a model airplane. It's loads of fun. Keep us updated on the progress.

Here is the phoenix as of today. I have not done any work for a couple of days, maybe I'll restart tomorrow.
So far this model feels easy compared to the arachnarok.
The image does not show that well the tones; the feather tips, tail and especially the ice crystals are much whiter than they appear here and the dark blue parts have more cyan in them.

It already looks great ! That's really clean and I can't wait to see more.

Any plan to magnetize it ?

It's indeed looking great.

And the Phoenix is indeed a lot easier to paint than a lot of other models. I found it great fun and a very fast paint job. Not a lot of details on the model, but enough to give you something to work with. And all the details that are on there matter.

Thanks, unfortunately the saddle is welded in and I could not manage to take it off, otherwise that would be an obvious thing to magnetize.
To be honest, I had not really thought about magnetizing bits, but I will not glue back the rider, rather keep it in place with some bluetack.

Although I did work quite a bit on the tones of the carapace, what I found really challenging is the amount of minute detail and the tree-dimensionality of arachnarok, whereas the phoenix is basically just two flattish faces.

That phoenix color scheme is looking great! Definitely enjoy a "frostier" looking palette.

Looks great! I've always wanted to pick up some of the later edition models that I missed while I was out of the hobby. I actually really like the dragon and phoenix models.

Love your paint scheme so far, can't wait to see more.

After more than a month away from painting due to heavy workload, things have finally relented in the last few days, and I have completed my Frostheart!
I am very pleased with it. Big miniatures always give a lot of satisfaction when they are complete, and this is not exception.
What was different though is that I found it an easy project, compared to a dragon or even more, Arachnarok.

I will do the rider some other time, it will remain a detachable object.

This phoenix is made of original parts.
I have another phoenix in bits that I can mould. I have enough feathers and heads to make at least another three phoenixes.
However that project will have to wait; I have some quick to work to do for my elves and then I'll move on to my next big unit, 30 savage orcs.
After that, I will be cloning cavalry (Silver Helms).

I had the same experience with the phoenix. It a fairly quick and easy paint job. I think it's because there's no unecessary details stuck on. You don't have to play "hunt the gem" for half a day to finish it. And at the same time the surface is textured, which means it's easier to paint than flat surfaces would have been.

For me, the extra bits that come with the phoenix kit have been a gold mine. Lots of great parts in there. I've gotten a lot of extra mileage out of it.

I agree, I also like the throne very much. It would almost be a pity to have it obscured by a rider!

Word has reached the shores of Ulthuan that a new powerful Whaagh! is on the rise, and that it will soon be joined by a large contingent of the savage orcish brethren from the wild southern lands.
Therefore the defenders of Ulthuan are again sharpening their blades and strengthening their shields before sailing to war.



All are milliput clones of a single original of each kind.
Looking more closely I see the shields need quite a bit of refinement; I did not appreciate how rough they are even wearing my glasses

I like the white metal dragons on blue.

I like both of them. And I think you're selling yourself short. Upclose they look a bit rough around the edges maybe. But that's the unforgiving nature of close-up photos. "Zoomed-out" when they are on a miniature and you're standing at a table they will look great.

This was the state as of Christmas Eve, before the end of the year I almost finished the base layer, but have since taken a break.

I like the skull especially. How were the models to assemble?

The big fella with the skull on its head is a converted miniature I got from eBay with 2 other metal ones and several from the plastic box for a total of ten.
Then I bought a new bag of 20. The amount of choices for assembling them is mindnumbing.
Choosing bits and gluing them took me a whole day. But on the bright side the parts come together very neatly and polystyrene cement works a treat.

That should be an epic looking unit. What do you have in mind for colors?
