Maybe better with a rider?

Again, did you consider adding an elf Galharen?

I think there was a good player towards the end of 8th ed who had some good success with a mounted flamespire. I think it was Furion, but I'm not sure (my search fu is failing me at the moment). He brought it to the ETC if I recall correctly.

Of course, his role (also in his team) was to not give up any points. And the anointed + flamespire is very good at that. Survivable character on top of a bird that can regenerate if it dies. So it was an interesting choice there.

But on its own he's indeed not that great in 8th edition. He usually feels like he underperforms the points he costs.

It was indeed Rod, he top-scored with it.

I remember him mentioning that a couple of opponents deliberately matched up with his list. The match-ups were much worse than they thought and they lost heavily.

Yeah, it was a surprisingly strong and durable list. Though it should be noted that is was also specifically catered to the ETC, with its own comp system and match up format. Which means that the results don't necessarily translate one on one to non-comp random 8th edition.

Still, it could be worth a look.

there are so many different lists und builds which work really well now, this is amazing. What I like the most is the fact, that even things believed to be simply bad, prove to win tournaments and be very competetive. After ETC many people started using sea gurds because Furion did well with his list. It is the same story with the mounted fire phoenix few years ago.
In 2 weeks time there is another 60+ players tourney in my hometown which I'm gonna attend, I'm testing and scratching the list right now and I can't decide what I want to take

Indeed. I remember around the time when I first joined u.net, towards the end of 7th, there was a guy, Ant Spiers I think, who build a list around 2 small LSG units. And managed to win GT with them. And that was at a time when people were saying it was impossible to win with LSG in your list because they were a severe handicap and that HE were too weak to really match the powerhouse lists.

It shows that it is important to really understand your list and why you bring the different units you bring. If you know the different elements intimately and optimise the army (not the units individually) then you can get great results. Of course, it helps to see the possibilities if you're a great player. And you need the dedication to keep iterating over your list to see what works, what underperforms and how you can improve things. Mathhammer only takes you so far. At some point you need to put the models on the table and try them out.

And this is what players like Furion did relentlessly. I think leading up to the ETC he played several games a week, analyzing the results and his list, making small changes here and there to get to the best list for him. The same was the case for Seredain and Curu. They played a lot and, at least as important, they learned from what worked and what didn't work.

Have fun at the tournament. And let us know how it went. What are the options you have in mind for your list?

What I noticed was that organised play under 8th tended towards lighter comp in English-speaking countries and heavier in continental Europe. But 8th was the common factor. Now we have 9th Age, AoS, Kings of War etc.. What I'm wondering is how much of each is played. Is 9th Age dominant on the continent for example?

I'm not sure. I'm out of touch with most of the gaming community here.

I think the comp around 8th edition came from a desire to turn a casual game into something competitive. I think it also came from the ETC, where a group of very vocal people found each other and decided their way was the way the game should be played. The ETC, as the largest European tournament, gave them the reach to publish their comp rules and have them widely accepted.

I actually also think that they found that creating a balanced and fun game was not as easy as it looked. As evidenced by the many comp and ETC discussions over the years.

It seems to me that there currently isn't one game played all over Europe. Curu for instance mentioned that Warmachine and hordes was the game of choice in Norway, with some Kings of War thrown in. Other countries seem to move towards 9th age if they have a few active, vocal people. 8th edition probably has quite a few players still, just not internet-active ones. And, if GW is to be believed, AoS is slowly gaining traction (actually, looking through their annual report, GW seems to be doing very well, with something like a 40% growth rate, though that's not necessarily AoS related).

They look very promising for the rest of the unit. :) The green is very unusual. And it's great, combined with the gold and earthy browns.

Did you make the bases yourself or were they bought from somewhere?

Lovely work Galharen!

=D>

The finest army I ever saw was a Khemri force, this was before the 6th Edition army book and that figure range. It was full of little touches like the ones you’ve used. The Priests all had animal heads like those statues!

Nice looking chariot. Looking forward to seeing it painted. I agree with SA that the little touches like the reigns and the mummy bandages on the horses really add to it.

Are you actually also getting any games in these days? Or is it mainly painting?

starting to look good. Though the brown of the base doesn't completely work for me. Not sure what it is. And perhaps having the complete model on there changes it. Maybe it's too bright and sharp in color compared to the rest of the model.

I do love the attention to detail that went into it. Like the skull stuck in the sand. Great atmosphere.

I love the chariot. The red and bronze combination especially is very striking. The red has a great lacquered look to it.

The only thing with the model is that with that base you'll be taking dangerous terrain tests every time you try to charge something...

There is a bit of a drop off there. I know I said it before, but I'm really impressed with the wire, and a bit ashamed I didn't think of it. Much easier than thread.
