A very berit blog (update 3/30)

#1 Post by berit »

Inspired by Eärendil and his Avelornian elves, I started to repaint my army/change paint scheme to a brown and green earthy one. I am tweaking my list, at its current incarnation it looks something like this:

Prince - White Sword, Armor of Calendor, Guardian Pheonix,
Noble - BSB, Reaver Bow, Great Weapon, Heavy Armor
Mage - 2 Scrolls

Seaguard x 10 - FC
Archers x 10 - Musician

White Lions x 15 - FC, Lion Banner, Amulet of Light
White Lions x 12 - FC
Phoenix Guard x 18 - FC, Warbanner
Dragon Princes x 5 - Musician, Standard, Ellyrion Banner
Lion Chariot
Tiranoc Chariot

RBT x 2

Points: 2250 (or there abouts)

I really like the fluff around Shadow Warriors, so off and on they make it into my list, as well as blocks of Spearelves, Eagles, Korhil, another unit of Phoenix Guard, and I have a couple cool models of nobles on steeds (also "inspired" by Eärendil).

I have no luck or ability at photographing miniatures and have tried on several occasions. Recently I was given an iSight and so I tried to take a couple pictures with that with limit success, but you can accually see the miniature which is an improvement.

Like I said, the pictures aren't the greatest but it gives an idea. I will continue working on better and more pictures, I still need finish and take pictures of Lion Chariot, Tiranoc Chariot, 2 Eagles, Seaguard, Archers, another Bolt Thrower, Dragon Princes (which are really Silverhelms), a dragon, a noble with bow on eagle, and a whole slew of other stuff.

It's a good looking colour scheme and I can see it becoming a classic along with Blue/White, Red/White/Silver & etc.
Taking digital pics is always a pain if the camera isn't the greatest. Have you tried cleaning up your pictures in a really good graphics program? I use Paintshop Pro to prepare my pictures for posting and it does a good job of clarifying and sharpening images.

I didn't have much time to mess with the photos. Some of them were in focus others not. I'm going to play around with it to see if I can't get some better pictures going on. Maybe I should look into getting a new camera.

Is there a 'macro' setting on your camera? It allows you to take close-up photos of very small objects. On my camera, the symbol is a flower...

Like your colors so far - feels very gritty and no nonsense.

I like the colour you've chosen, I think it will look good!

I would think about giving the basing a bit more attention though, you'd be amazed how much it can jazz up a model.

Hey Berit--great job with the scheme! You have gotten a lot done. Shadow warriors look cool with the colors you chose. I especially like the bsb conversion. Can you back up the camera a little so we can see the banner? I should be working on my bsb soon, though I am using the ax hero instead of the one your have chosen (though I considered him as well). If I were to suggest one thing, it would be to shade the brown. Brown is a really easy color to work with, so it is a good color to practice on. My most common brown recipe is scorched brown base, highlights with bestial brown, and the highest highlights with white+bestial brown. Give it a shot--it isn't all that hard and makes a huge difference. If it doesn't come out, it is easy to paint over and start again (especially since you are working with a dark color). Also, hit those mettalics with a brown wash! Keep up the good work and work on those photography skills! :D

Si'anelle of Avelorn - I haven't tried to clean up the pics with a program yet...I think I want a better camera/better pics before I start messing with them.

prelude_to_war - I'm currently using my iSight which doesn't have any settings...I am just screen grabbing the pics right now. I do have a cheapy camera (my phone has a better one) but it doesn't have a macro camera. I looked
:(

Paraicj - I really don't pay much attention to my bases, just cause I don't really think about it, but after you pointed it out I started looking at miniatures that I thought looked good and there was one thing constant: the bases. So I will looking into sprucing those up. Thanks!

Eärendil - Right now with the browns I am starting at bestial brown then highlighting with snakebite leather. on some of the minis it looks good, but how I am taking the pictures right now you can't see a difference. Heck, you can hardly see a difference just looking at it. I will try it your way and see if it works. About the BSB, I haven't gotten around to giving him a "banner" right yet, right now it looks like this:

I am trying to borrow a camera to take some pictures, so we will see if I get some better photos, until then more pictures with the iSight and desklamp combo. As for updates, I worked on a new BSB, by the time I get done I will have 3 of them (2 on foot 1 mounted).

White Lion BSB WIP - still needs a standard and some armor. I on the other hand need better GS skills.
