1500 Points with Dragon Mage

#1 Post by Ghogra »

Hello all. I am new to High Elves and looking to put together a decent list using a Dragon Mage and themed toward Chrace. Here is what I have come up with. I would be honored to receive some feed back.

Heroes: 560

Korhil 140
Dragon Mage; level 2, Silver Wand, Guardian Phoenix

Core: 261

24 Spearman; Full Command, War banner 261

Special: 565

Lion Chariot 140
Lion Chariot 140
14 White Lions; Full Command, Standard of Balance 285

Rare: 100

Eagle 50
Eagle 50

Total 1486
I intend to have Korhil join the spears, using a frontage of 6 to boost the number of attacks. With his stubborn and the large size of the unit they should be a tar pit with some punch. The White Lions will use a frontage of 7, again to get more punch out of their high strength attacks. I will use one chariot to support each infantry unit. The eagles are for war machine hunting and march blocking. One of my frequent opponents is a Warriors of Chaos player with a devotion to the blood god, so I am thinking the eagles can really help break up his frenzied line. That leaves the Dragon Mage for flank attacks and spell blasting. It sounds like, with the aid of the Silver Wand, I should be able to swamp most magical defenses at this point level and get at least a few spells off.

The challenges I see with this list:
-Only two blocks of infantry. Is this too few for this point level? I am a little worried about getting surrounded.
-No ranged support. I could squeeze a repeater bolt thrower in there at the loss of an eagle and a few other extras. Is that worth it?
-High cost units puts a lot of eggs in just a few baskets. It would be tough for me to claim table quarters and just a few bad leadership rolls could really hurt.

I used to play goblins so this list is very different from what I have used in the past. That is what drew me to the high elves in the first place (that and lion chariots... and dragons...)

Thanks for your feedback.

The Dragon Mage is a ridiculous power house at this level. Without a doubt keep silverwand, but keeping the Dragon Mage alive from attacks is definately a lost cause, so drop Guardian Pheonix.
Ring of Fury for him would be ideal, but taking 2 Scrolls is probably the better option.

Korhil is cool, but the Dragon Mage is sooo much better with Banner of Sorcery. I would replace Korhil with a BSB with Banner of Sorcery. Make sure you equip him with Dragon Armor, Shield, and a Great Weapon. The spears will lose stubborn, but you still get the 3 S6 attacks. Addtionally, Spears should be fine at 20

Shooting should not be a big problem now that your Dragon Mage has extra dice from Sorcery. RBT are nice but not necessary, I think your choice to get 2 Eagles is a wise one.

I agree that you have too many points in your 2 infantry blocks. Drop spearmen to 20, drop lions to 12. Additionally, only a standard with Lion Banner is necessary for the lions, drop the champ and musician.

With these extra points consider Naked Dp unit 5 for 150 or 7 swordmasters for 105.

Dragon Mage; level 2, Silver Wand, 2 Dispel Scrolls 435
BSB, Great Weapon, Shield, Dragon Armor, Banner of Sorcery 176

19 Spearmen 216
Full Command, War Banner

12 White Lions 212
Standard, Lion Standard

6 Dragon Princes (Lion Princes Maybe?) 215
Standard, Banner of Ellyrion

1 Lion Chariot 140

2 Eagles 100

1494 points

If I interpret your intentions correctly, you intend to hit your opponent very hard with your infantry.

I think you have to concentrate one flank and use the Spears to pivot to the centre once you destroy the enemy units on that flank. If you move fast enough, you can avoid being surrounded, but you need to destroy a flank fast, and sacrifice the turkeys to divert or march block the most immediate threats to your more centralized infantry troop.

If you can place a forest somewhere along the central line, you could march the WLs into that and anchor your line there.

But you're right, it's a gamble.

Thanks for the feedback. Musashi, your interpretation is correct. Is the infantry I have, combined with the chariots, enough to smash a flank. I am still fairly new to Fantasy in general (long time 40k player that has dabbled in fantasy over the years). I had thought about trimming some points out for a couple of small units of spears or even some naked White Lions. That would give me some bulk to hold the center while I hammer a flank.

Jaith, I really like the idea of the Lion Princes. Good flavor and looks like they can hit pretty hard, but with this list I was trying to focus on infantry. The princes made it into my 2000 point version. I debated about the phoenix on the Dragon Mage for a while. Do you think that the Silver Wand and two power stones could serve the same purpose as the banner of sorcery? Lots of dice for the first couple of turns while I mage hunt the enemy magic defense.

I am afraid that you cannot afford 2x powerstones to yourself, as you must take at least 1 if not 2 dispel scrolls. with only 3 dice and without the inherent +1 HE to dispel, any army with semi-devent magic will be the end of you. Just thinking of a level 3 EotG in this bracket with Heaven spells that are limited only by line of sight... Your dragon will be toast to magic or beast cowered with only 3 dice. Even a single 1st level mage manages to match his power dice for your dispel.

Sorry for emphasising on this point so much, i recently had a similar list run against Tomb Kings. These guys are basically unstoppable if you let them have their magic free.

Sorry for my noobishness, but what is EotG?

I understand the concerns about magical protection, but using a Dragon Mage as a scroll caddy just seems like a waste. In my (limited) experience playing goblins I rarely ever took a shaman at this point level (magic of the little waggghh is all but worthless with level 1 and 2 casters). And even with just two dispel dice I never had too much trouble. I have not played a whole lot in tournament level play, either though.

Engine of the Gods. It's a Lizardmen mount for a Skink Priest, it attaches to an Ancient Stegodon. It can make a 5+ Ward vs. incoming missiles, burn things within a radius and it gives Skink Priests extra magical power.
