Character set ups at 2000-2250 point games
Lately, when I see a 2000-2250 point list posted up, I pretty much guess 90% of the time what the character set up is because its usually one of the two common set ups. Note I have no problem with cookie cutter character set-ups or the people who use them. While these cookie cutters are without a doubt efficient, I am interested in the offbeat choices some people choose to take, and their experiences with them. To eliminate confusion, the two cookie cutter setups are the following and can include a little variation:
Prince 621
Halberd
Armor of Caledor
Vambraces of Defense
Amulet of Light
Star Dragon
Battle Standard Bearer 218
Lance
Dragon Armor
Shield
Barded Steed
Battle Banner
Mage 140
2 Dispel Scrolls
OR
Archmage 350
Level 4
Ring of Fury
Silver Wand
2 Dispel Scrolls
Mage 185
Level 2
Seerstaff
Dispel Scroll
Battle Standard Bearer 143
Great Weapon
Armor of Caledor
Again, these choices are great, but I am interested in the other stuff. Like the "Griffon Tri-mage" or "Scroll Caddy General". Special Characters can be included, but, lets not mention Teclis, since he is pretty much cookie cutter as well, and is typically found with maybe a caddy or a bsb.

Re: Character set ups at 2000-2250 point games
I have used and I am still using these characters with satisfying results:
* prince, da, sh, lance, bow of the seafarer, temakador's gauntlets, ToL, mounted either on a barded steed or on a star dragon. Currently, I am contemplating to put him on a sundragon
- excellent choince, this one
* Noble, barded steed, da, sh, helm of fortune, sword of might, sometimes BSB - my favourite hero level CC char - excellent, reliable, has magical attacks
* Noble, da, sh, star lance, ToL, barded steed or great eagle - very useful too
* Noble, da, sh, barded steed, reaver bow, ToL/enchanted shield
Actually, we have a lot of options at our disposal, so it pays to be creative.
From the special characters, I particularly like Alith Anar - he is awesome, and I really like fielding him in games that are designed to use spec. chars. He not only boosts the shooting phase, but he also has good protection and ability in CC and is a good value for money.
The other special character that I like is Eltharion, both on foot and on Stormwing, as he is very balanced and offers both CC and magical support to the army.
However, I play very, very rarely with special characters, so my game experience with them is limited to a few games only..

Re: Character set ups at 2000-2250 point games
For general games at 2250 in non-competitive games, I have tried
Prince w/RGoH, JotD, GW, DA, Tem. Gaunt.
L2 seer/scroll
L2 wand/ring

Marinero covered most of mine, however I have tried a few more....
Prince, White Sword, Armour of Caledor, Guardian Phoenix, Talisman of Loec (Vampire hunter)
Archmage, Vortex Shard, Dispel Scroll (borrowed this one from the tactics page, thank you)
Prince, Null Stone, Dragon Armour, Lance, Shield on Star Dragon (this one has won me a lot of games)
Dragon Mage, Silver Wand, Guardian Phoenix, Sword of Might (would have been more fun if I could make a ward save )
Noble, Dragon Armour, Lance, Enchanted Shield, Reaver Bow on Great Eagle
Prince, Bow of the Seafarer, Armour of Stars, Talisman of Protection ( Bow works good, but I always seem to teleport into some really inconvenient spot, fun though)
Prince, Reaver Bow, Vambraces of Defense, Dragon Armour, Shield, Lance on Star Dragon
Prince, Radiant Gem of Hoeth, Dispel Scroll, Dispel Scroll, Enchanted Shield, Dragon Armour, Lance on Star Dragon ( can you tell I like Dragons? )
There is one more I haven't tried yet, but I saw it on the tactics page and that is Archmage on foot with Talisman of Saphery and Folariaths Robe and probably something else. Haven't had a chance to try it yet but looks very sneaky.

I run:
Mage, Lvl2, Seerstaff, Scroll (cookie-cutter but beautiful!)
BSB, HA, GW, Radiant Gem. (bit chancy but a good multi-tasker)
Lord, Chariot, DA, Reaver Bow, Ring of Fury, Dragonscale Shield, Spear. (risky, might re-jig)

Re: Character set ups at 2000-2250 point games
The supposedly "standard" build for Dragon Mages is not that great. The 5+ Ward Save just can't do its job to keep 2 wounds at T3 with no save afloat in virtually any situation. Statistically, Guardian Pheonix only porvides an extra 2/3 of a wound, whereas Golden Crown of Atrazar provides a guaranteed wound and still lets you get silverwand!
So far, my favorite is the scroll caddy on the Star Dragon , thats just awesome! I have experimented witht the following:
Prince
GW
Shield
Armor of the Stars
Healing Potion
Dragon Mage 435
Level 2
Silver Wand
Golden Crown
Mage 185
Level 2
Trickster's Pendant
Dispel Scroll
Its actually not as bad as it looks, all the little tricks that throw my opponent off make up for the lack of punch. Still needs more trials before I can come to any solid conclusions.

Re: Character set ups at 2000-2250 point games
@jaith: The "best" set ups for a dragon mage are in descending order
1) silver wand, loremasters cloak
2) silver wand, ring of fury
3) silver wand, amulet of fire, something
4) silver wand, crown
5) silver wand, something not above
6) everything else.
The extra wound on a t3 model doesn't matter so much, wheras the LMC and amulet of fire give protection to the dragon, and the ring of fury makes him much more dangerous.
My current character set ups at 2250 are looking at something like: level 4, silver wand, 3 scrolls, sliverskein. and no other characters.

Re: Character set ups at 2000-2250 point games
Is the Dragon Mage Caddy not useful in some set-ups?
I guess the MR could be handy. Was disappointed to find that the Amulet doesn't fireproof the SD!geoguswrek wrote:amulet of fire give protection to the dragon
I like this. It reminds me of PapaElf's Seerstaff/3 Scrolls set-up, which had the option of Lvl3 if you were short on points. I guess the fact that the AM only really needs Silver Wand gives you a lot of flexibility.geoguswrek wrote:My current character set ups at 2250 are looking at something like: level 4, silver wand, 3 scrolls, sliverskein. and no other characters

The MR is useful as it protects you from beast cowers (which nothing else does).
I don't like the DM caddy, the dragon isn't worth 300 points.

This is it isn't it? Other dragons get MR easier than we do or (God forbid) Ring of Hotek. However, there is something to be said for our hero-slot dragon!geoguswrek wrote:The MR is useful as it protects you from beast cowers (which nothing else does).

Re: Character set ups at 2000-2250 point games
I came up with a list whose all point is to surprise the enemy with characters, hehe.
Prince;
Armour of Stars
Bow of the Seafarer
This guy was fun. I got so many flank shots with this guy.
Noble - Rad Gem
took beasts, and even got a bear's anger charge with this guy. damn, that's an awesome spell.
Mage level 2 - The White Sword, Talisman of Loec
This guy was the prime jewel. He actually killed the enemy general when he was charged - he hit, failed to wound, reroll wound with Loec, killing blow, general succeeds armour, rerolls and fails, fails ward - dead general.
Pure awesome, that was.

White_Pheonix, that is hilarious. You just can't beat the white sword mage.
Got me thinking. What about starlance and talisman of loec on a dragon mage!? Silly I know, but cool idea, and can work soometimes, as you mentioned.
