1500 List vs. LM

I am playing my buddy next weekend who is bringing his nasty lizards that I can't beat. His army is normally made up of the following:

couple skink units to use as shields, some with spears, some with blowpipes
2 big saurus blocks
one of the temple guard units
2 salamanders
4-6 terradons
engine and/or steggie

I have a pretty large HE army with all units available, so my question is: What would the perfect counter be to this army? Keep in mind, I am 0-4 against this guy, so being friendly is the least of my worries.

20 LSG shields, full command, Warbanner


14 SMs cmd, Standard of Balance

14 White Lions cmd, Lion Banner


2 RBT

1497 pts


A little light on troops but I think it gives you what you need. Let him come to you. Deploy the LSG however you need to. Have the SMs battle a Saurus block or the TG. The Lance noble is to assassinate the Engine.

Shoot up the terradons, distract the steggie and engage the rest in close combat, if possible one at the time.

that sounds pretty good and is nothing like i would have tried. I think im definitely gonna give it a go and see what happens. What is your thinking with the lion standard and standard of balance?

Unfortunately, essential nowadays. Usually, I give the SoB to the primary strike force.

i usually give SOB to swordsmasters, they tend to run away from shooting or magic otherwise. >.<

Try something like:

lvl2+ring+fury (high magic)
lvl2+seer+scroll (I'd take metal 4 and 6)
BSB with reaver bow, GW and talisman of loec (no armour needed, take if you have points) or AoC+GoC/GP
10 archers
13+ lions with FC, lion banner and maybe skeinsilver (balance is not necessary needed, no hatred or frenzy in lizzies, if I remember correctly)
5xDP with sorcery banner
5xSW (effectiviness depending little about the size of table you are playing)
0-2 RBT
0-2 eagles or/and 5xreavers with musician

At 1500 you can actually have a decent magic phase against the lizzies with 2 Lvl twos. Lore of metal spell number one is also good for sniping the priest. It potentially has a 2+ save from the steggie so becomes a big ouch with that spell. For core I'd stick with spearmen with the lion banner. In my battles against them the spears have held their own even against the engine! I don't normally charge with spears but I would the engine to take away impact hits. Target all attacks on the priest to stop the engine from working--burning alignment is a nasty nasty thing.

The terradons are very effective against us IMHO--especially if there is a forest on the table (try to deploy them far from it). Try to take these out with your RBT's fast so that they last the rest of the game. I've often not been able to stop them in time and end up losing my shooting phase (my RBT bolts are often made of rubber, apparently).

The saurus blocks can be intimidating. I've had luck against them with a tank of 11 silver helms, full command, with a BSB noble with either the battle banner or the star lance depending on points. They have the great save and good combat res to ensure the win when charging.

For the salamanders (I hate that these tiny things have stronger breath than a dragon!) I usually just simply try to avoid them but you could charge right up to him with a basic DP unit and dare him to breathe his useless fire on you.

Actuallly, since the priest on steg is a single model, you can't pick it out in this way, you can target a specific model, but not the part of the model you want to hit.

you can snipe with lore of metal right? target single model, no target restriction, only need line of sight 24"

if it's a multipart-model, like a dragon for example, can you single out the rider?

btw it should be the same as the spell steal soul.

You certainly cannot pick out the rider on a beast with either the nurgle #1 spell or RoBI, don't know about seal stoul.

steal soul has same requirements as burning iron (target-wise) but half the range and in aoe around the caster without los.

so if u do for example rule of burning iron it get randomized like shooting? o.O

Yeah too bad. Guess I'll just have to charge the steggie and kill him with attacks. Either way works for me. Strange that you can pick a character out of a ranked up unit of similar sized troops all dressed up the same, but you can't quite make him out on top of that monster holding the reins "Is that the monster or the rider? Dang, I can't tell! Need to get my eyes checked again."
