Specialist games return?
It seems GW listened to a lot of prayers, and will reintroduce some classic old games this Christmas: Blood Bowl, Necromunda and Battlefleet Gothic. They will also continue support for LotR.

Its nice to hear but don't you thinks its all a bit too late? With so many skirmish games now being played and X-wing dominating among space battle fans...

Re: Specialist games return?
Interesting.
I think it all depends on the execution. Many of the old specialist games have a great cult following and a lot of people who either have played them and would like to do so again, who are playing them and would love official support, or who have heard about them and want to give them a try. And a few of them have recently gotten PC games or will get them in the near future. So I think the potential playerbase is there.
If then the actual games are great then I can definitely see it picking up and selling well. Of course, I do think they only get 1 shot at this. With the internet being what it is and given how vocal people can be about games, if the first game they release isn't good then people will not bother with the rest I think.
And, if the games are great, then I think it will (or could) earn them back some of the love and trust they lost with AoS...
As for LoTR, I would love to give it a go and see it have more players. It looks like a great game and many of its players claim it's one of the most fun GW games they've played. If I could actually find opponents I'd go for it Of course, supporting it doesn't actually have to cost them a lot. Renew a mold every now and then. Issue a rules update once every 2-3 years. The set of armies, models and special rules is limited enough to not let this be a very difficult operation (compared to say old style WH with 13 armies and perhaps 400-500 different models/units).

Re: Specialist games return?
Interesting. Hastings over at Warseer confirms and says it has been in the works for about a year. And he usually knows things...
Edit: It could of course be an Australian insurgence.
Not GW would mean Forge World I guess. It's been in the works for some time. Not GW.

LotR skirmish is lots of fun. It excels on small maps, low model count and heavy terrain.
For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.
And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

I'd love to see it. But they've done it once before, got everyones hopes up, supported it poorly and then suddenly dropped it. So I'm cautiously excited.
Re: Specialist games return?
While the announcement seems to be genuine, a homemade leaflet is a strange way to do it. I share Shannar's sentiment. Or is that GW attempt are guerilla marketing? Devious!
Re: Specialist games return?
It's pretty much confirmed now from various sources. Blood Bowl first they say, then Epic and Battlefleet Gothic. This new division will also support LotR/Hobbit. The fan-boy in me just want to jump up and down screaming "GW IZ BACK" but the cynic in me is desperatly holding the fanboy down.
Re: Specialist games return?
Blood bowl I'd get. My wife is enjoying Fantasy Flights Blood Bowl:Manager at the moment, so I guess she'd give the original game a try as well. I wonder if Warmaster will be back as well?
I'm watching the Betrayal at Calth playthrough video GW made - its like they've become a different company these days!

Bloodbowl still has major tournaments so that's not a surprise at all. I'd love to see a improved upon Man O' War, but that's been the dream for years.

Hastings says it is first work of the new division to be, so it as well may be different company from GW proper. But in all this, no real mention of fantasy side of things. Will they sit on them while they are pushing AoS?RE.Lee wrote:I'm watching the Betrayal at Calth playthrough video GW made - its like they've become a different company these days!

If they start talking about Warmaster then maybe. I need to see what that really means first. I expect minimum effort and maximum price tag.

I played MoW a fair bit but not Dreadfleet.
More of a one-off I understand?

Re: Specialist games return?
Models for Dreadfleet are great (and I am glad to have them in my display cabinet). The game (the quality of the rules notwithstanding) is too much of a one trick pony to really get traction.SpellArcher wrote:I played MoW a fair bit but not Dreadfleet.

Re: Specialist games return?
Dreadfleet was alright, the problem was that I and others expected Man O' War, and we got a stand alone game with lots of special"character" ships rather than the generic fleets that people wanted.
Re: Specialist games return?
I would have bought Dreadfleet, even knowing how disappointed people were, if it had a smaller board. I mean, if its supposed to be some casual fun (and I think it might work as such) I should be able to fit it on my table!

I kind of wish they'd just sell Man O' War to Fantasy Flight. They've done a nice job with a lot of other old GW stuff.

Re: Specialist games return?
The more I think about it the more I am convinced it will be only about the titles they have already mentioned. Warmaster happens in the Warhammer world and since that was murdered then I don't think they would even bother. It is possible that Man'O'War is not going to happen due to the same reason.
On the other hand Epic, in particular set in Horus Heresy setting + Battlefleet Gothic might have a chance.
Anyway, they are recruiting so if you want to have a say in how it can look like you should apply. That also means it is not going to happen fast since they don't have the teams yet.

Re: Specialist games return?
My question is are the games (rules) getting an update or are they just re-hashing the old stuff in a cash grab? Hopefully they can improve on what they had rather than release the same again as with Space Hulk.

Re: Specialist games return?
In most of these cases I honestly hope it's more a quick cash grab and a rerelease of old models than a big update. Bloodbowl would benifit from some cost adjustments (Orc Blitzers for example) but if the touch the core rules it would be a crime.John Rainbow wrote:My question is are the games (rules) getting an update or are they just re-hashing the old stuff in a cash grab?
