The colonies

#1 Post by Findolfin »

Well, I for one is one of the very displeased player with latest changes to elves in general. The background story and knowing where my army came from ( fictional or not ) was something that made me enjoy the hobby. With Ulthuan gone and a rather akward melting pot in Athel Loren, I simply can`t find the place of my army in the warhammer world. Will it prevent me from playing, no. Will it prevent me from painting, no. But it will impact a lot on the immersion factor. Unless, I rebase my army to a fully High elf populated city.

High elves from theses cities could still get to the fight by ships but would not be based in Athel Loren. Besides, with those new "world roots", which seems to imply teleportation, it could be very possible that theses colonies are actually linked to the colonies. I suspect many elves would go there rather than serve Malekith.

In short, what do we know about the southern colonies or any other colonies still existing around the warhammer world? What are the names of thses cities, their background, populations, etc. So far, information seem quite rare on them.

I think the Elven Kingdoms have no choice but to be all-in on unification right now, with the threat of Chaos looming so large. But I also believe that, after the End Times, new settlements will be established in the Old World that reflect the historical kingdoms. Check out my battle report http://www.ulthuan.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=68025 for my vision of Imrik's post-End Times struggle to establish an independent New Caledor.

I expect the next Elf army book to be united Elves, but traditional High/Wood/Dark armies, or specific Kingdom themed armies, are always going to be possible in both the fluff and crunch.

My High Elves have always been a colony located in and around the Black Peninsula. Their capital city, Nikaia, has been built where the human city of Kassos is situated on some maps. End Times or no End Times, they go about their business as they always have. Ain't heard o' no unification down here!

Did a bit of search as time permitted:

Arnheim: http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Arnheim
Latest info I have on it was that it had finally been conquered by the Dark Elves and razed in their 8th edition book.

Citated of Dusk: http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Citadel_of_Dusk

Gates of Calith: http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Gates_of_Calith

Fortress of Dawn: http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fortress_of_Dawn

I also found some references to the following names, "Tor" meaning "city" if I am not mistaken:

- Tower of the Rising Sun
- Tor Elithis
- Tor Elasor

So far, the most promising one is the Fortress of Dawn. The island has several towns and a fortress as well as a large sea port and a full fleet. Worth to note that there is also a Southern Chaos waste, chaos seems to sip in from both poles. I would not count these colonies out of the fight.

Back in the day I used to have a whole self-made armybook based on a group of elves that had peacefully split from the High Elves that had colonies all over the world. Though that fluff was very clearly written by a very young Luna Guardian, some of it might be salvageable for this new world we find ourselves in. Maybe the colonies band together in a mutual defense pact, sort of like a Warhammer world NATO?

Luna, try not to beat them too hard. They are proud about their pseudo-glorious past and their present nothingness, you know.

I haven't gotten any of EoT things yet, and until my Army book or rule book tell me different, I still rule Athel Anarhain from Ar Yvrellion, and I'm still one of the Archons of Tor Yvresse.
This is still just some campaign GW is doing for me. Storm of Chaos came and went didn't it, coincidently ten years ago, and all of that wasn't continued in the next BRB. If needs be, my Sea Elves will flee, not sure were to, I still don't trust Spires a lot.

On the Colonies: There are currently nine that I know of in the south. There used to be a tenth south of Naggaroth called Arnheim, but Malekith destroyed that one in the last armybook. In the same armybook, Tor Elasor was sacked by Lokhir Fellheart, but since Tor Elasor is on a large island, Lokhir's attack was a raid rather than an invasion and it is around 160 years since the raid, I figure that they would have rebuilt things before The End Times hit (at least that is what my armies have been doing as they are based in Tor Elasor).

The remaining Colonies are:

- The Citadel of Dusk: This fortress city stands guard over the tip of Lustria and is invisible to all but those who serve on its walls (a bit like the White Tower).

- The Fortress of Dawn: The spires of this port city are built around a single colossal waystone. The city itself is split into two parts where one lies on an island just outside the southern tip of the Southlands and the other part lies on the tip itself.

- Tor Elasor: A big port city currently rebuilding from Lokhir's raid and lies on a big Island south east of the Southlands. No current known Warden as the last one was killed by Lokhir.

- The Tower of Stars: This city controls an archipelago north of Tor Elasor. Sister city to the Tower of the Sun.

- The Tower of the Sun: This alabaster fortress city watches over sea routes across the southern ocean and acts as a staging posts for the armies of the High Elves.

- The City of Spires: A big city on the north-western coast of Ind and just south of the mountains of Mourn (which should make it into an important trading center). If you want to know more, ask Rod on these forums, as he has set himself up as the warden of that city and has been writing some extensive background for it.

- The Gates of Calith: These two fortresses stands on opposite sides of the straits that divide the Hinterland of Kuresh with the Southern Wastes. They effectively control the sea passage to Cathay. The warden is an Archmage and the Gates recently defeated a major Skaven attack.

- Tor Elithis: This large city lies to the east of the Gates of Calith and controls three large islands. I don't know much about this place but the geography and size of the Islands of Elithis leads me to believe that that this would be the best place to rebuild a large High Elf realm.

- The Tower of the Rising Sun: This city lies to the northwest of Tor Elithis and on the largest of the Elithis islands (Tor Elithis lies on the second largest of them). I am unable to find anything more on this place.

Hope this helps, and remember that the world is a large place and there is bound to be hidden towns and towers other places as, so feel free to come up with your own ideas.

Edit: On the Tower of the Rising sun, it seems to lie either on the main island of Tor Elithis or on another island further to the north. The position differs from the 7th and 6th edition high elf maps to the large current warhammer world map.
