To be honest I am quite excited to see what they come up with I think it has potential to be really good.
Everyone seem to be focussing on the negative side of the rumours that were deliberately worded vaguely and then would have had a personal spin put on them by at least two people.
The second wave of rumours that appeared yesterday that, if true, show things are not as bad as first shown seem to be being over looked a bit. There is as much potential for it to be really cool as there is for it to be awful.

I have over 12k of high elves, at least half of which is from 5th edition or before, the idea of them being invalidated or reduced to some kind of second tier in gaming terms is extremely worrying. Hell it's bad enough high elves dont even really exist anymore, they were the reason I got into this hobby 20 years ago. I'm not sure youre understanding the time and money some people have invested in this hobby, the idea of them invalidating things is horrendous.Motley wrote:To be honest I am quite excited to see what they come up with I think it has potential to be really good.

Also the idea that the fluff is changing to the point that the previous world and story are essentially irrelevant is infuriating.
I started high elves because of their fluff, and primarily because of their genesis from the lotr high elves which inspired my imagination like no other thing in fiction has before or since. I remember reading the high elf army book for the first time as a child and literally shaking with excitement, they'd taken this idea from tolkiens works and expanded on it and made it their own in the most brilliant way. Being a high elf player is part of who I am. I know other races have similar stories, empire players love that they look like a late medieval (iirc?) German army, brettonians love that they're about medieval knights and Arthurian myths, dwarf players love the tolkien links. They're doing this so they can make an ip that is more clearly their own, but they can't see the forest for the trees, it's the broader links and more classic fantasy and historical tropes that attract people in the first place. How will this really be any better than warmahordes?
Theyre taking that away to attract more 40k players to fantasy (that we can happily do without, the games attract different personality types, and the amount of unpleasantness I witness twice a week from a wide variety of 40k gamers is enough to make me leave my death korps at home). It feels like I've been cheated, sold a product and then told it's actually something else that I wouldn't have been interested in in the first place.
There's this stupid internet myth that space marines outsell the entire fantasy range, I know senior Gw employees and they tell me it's bullshit. In the UK for example 40k only barely outsold fantasy in the last quarter, hobbit also accounts for a more significant percentage of sales than the internet community realises. Marines are popular in the states true, and a lot of the more vocal internet community lives there which is why this view is propagated. I'm not going to lie, I f!£_!&g hate space marines. My job is in the design field, I trained as a designer for a long long time, and I hate everything about them from a design perspective. It's all the worst bits of 1980s sci-fi squashed into a testosterone charged, inelegant, poorly proportioned piece of crap. Everything about them screams lazy generic design. The idea that even a smidgen of that thought process coming into fantasy disgusts me. Not to mention how unfun it will be having to deal with even more stupidly armoured units, making s3 even more useless.
I would also assume they'll write into the rules some kind of significant benefit to having a round base, to gradually phase out pre 9th models.
Sorry for the rant.

Replace high elves with [your army] and this sums up the feeling of many veteran fantasy gamers.Ielthan wrote: I started high elves because of their fluff, and primarily because of their genesis from the lotr high elves which inspired my imagination like no other thing in fiction has before or since. The sky hasn't quite fallen on our heads yet, but these "bubblehammer" rumours are not encouraging.
Re: Expectations to a 9th ed - new rumours from Warseer adde
The more I think about it - the more it kind of makes sense.
What if 9th edition is being tooled more toward the Magic/Heroclix players?
If there is no old world and everything is shattered into "bubbles of reality" each player can contain their army in a bubble, and each bubble could be made up of any of the new factions. (as an aside : Notice how the quotes from Darnok never said "armies" they were always "factions" - so it probably won't be 'Elves' but some sort of 'Adeptus Elvestus' for copyright reasons that would have the ability to take much more than elves. ) Much like magic has different colored mana - the different "armies/factions" would be based around a few core choices always in stock, and then you can take whatever other specialty models you want from any "faction" (with maybe a few restrictions based on fluff - or maybe not it *is* GW) essentially building an unbound "deck" of models around a certain point value.
The specialty models would be one time releases - so you would need to get them before they sold out even if you ever possibly might want to use it - much like Magic where there are card releases and then they go out of print. This would also give them the ability to give all of the old models new stats for the system (probably sold as dataslates or supplements) - allowing everyone to continue to use the models they own - just not in the same way.
What do you all think?

I'm excited about the next edition, I don't know how much of my rather large Asur army will get used in it, but this is a hobby. I have hobbies because I have the time and money for them, I was supposed to be spending that money on an Asrai force, but maybe I'll just hold off and see what's coming.

Re: Expectations to a 9th ed - new rumours from Warseer adde
I think they'll have to release absolute filth to warrant people replacing models from the 8th ed or HOTEK elf lists, when you look at the strength of those lists already, they'd have to release complete army beater units/models to justify it. I think we're going to see Warhammer Fantasy retract a little and then slowly begin to expand again as demand dictates, which is kind of like 40k now releasing small factions like Harlequins, I don't think it's worth worrying about long term at all. Rebasing aside I don't see how they're realistically going to be able to 'force' people to buy limited run models, especially in a world where converting/kitbashing/proxies are always a possibility. I really do believe this is going to end up being a flash in the pan as far as how 'bad' things are going to get.
The fluff on the other hand could be completely different, however I continue to have the point of view I had with the End Times, if you're creative, you can turn chicken shit into chicken salad every day of the week.
I like 8th, even though I've only played a small handful of games, I liked 4th-6th to, I liked 2nd ed 40K, I liked Mordheim and Necromunda. At the end of the day, once you learn the rules, playing war games is fun and if we get little toy elves to play with I reallllly doubt it's going to be that bad. I always get befuddled when people start to hate something that's supposed to be fun; if you hate it, you should run like hell away from it and find something that is fun; that's the best thing, just do what's fun and let the world be the world.

Re: Expectations to a 9th ed - new rumours from Warseer adde
While I don't exactly like the sound of the new fluff (Bubbles crashing into each other? Not exactly the wide, fantasy world that draws me in and captures the imagination), I don't feel like it ruins everything GW has built up unto this point. Heck, I've been enjoying the End Times for what they are without feeling as though it invalidates the existing setting. I consider making my own fluff and backstories one of the best parts of this hobby, and I'm happy to keep doing it in a setting a few years before the End Times. I can still have the same setting I've always enjoyed, although I realise not everyone's going to share the same perspective.
What I'm most concerned about with all this is where GW decides to go with the models. I don't see too many kits getting scrapped (so much of the fantasy lineup is pretty recent/high quality), in fact if they do I think it would be more of a gradual phase-out than anything else. Why make a bunch of kits released in the last few years obsolete?
On the other hand, the rumoured new rules sound kinda exciting. While I enjoy fantasy, it always felt a bit clunkier than skirmish games like Mordheim and LotR. I think GW is actually better at making a good, fun skirmish game than a full wargame. So, even if everything else goes south... hopefully the rules will be good!

Lord of the Rings has evolved into the Hobbit to follow the movies, and a supplement came out in a recent White Dwarf for it.EagleOfTheForestPath wrote:Neither of which are supported any more, go figure.

I didn't really follow it, but as far as I know the Hobbit is a new game, since the first one got broken by an angry elephant.
My information might be in error, though.

Re: Expectations to a 9th ed - new rumours from Warseer adde
Hello everybody,
Re: rumors of 9th edition on war-gaming forums.
These rumors are a manifestation of the fears I first expressed at the earliest stages of the End Times rumors, when I first started hearing about sweeping, irreversible changes to the game. Since then, I've abandoned my 2nd dwarf army and moved on to Warmachine. I've always been what many could call a GW loyalist in the sense I always tried to find the best aspect of any changes they made. I was introduced to miniature gaming because of a GW store, GW staff taught me how to paint, and a few of my friends are people I met while hanging out in a GW store.
It wasn't any particular change that made me quit the game, but more accurately it was the uncertainty. It got to the point where by the time I finished painting x unit or x army there would be changes, or rumors of change, that would invalidate the reasons I had for painting up said models in the first place. It simply got to the point where I lost any confidence in the long term stability of the game and could no longer justify assembly/painting time. Some people enjoy painting for painting sake, but I (and many others I think) tolerate painting in order to fully enjoy the spectacle of fully painted armies. If I had not made my decision when I did I would be sitting here in gaming purgatory with a half painted dwarf army wondering if I would even be able to use the models I painted over 3-6 months in the way I had intended. It is not enough to be able to use the models with different rules or in a new edition, because I selected the models for tactical purposes and not for aesthetic purposes. GW continue to fail to understand that people buy models in order to play the game, and not play the game in order to do something with the models. I didnt even factor money into my decision, nor GW's understandable need to make money. My expenses, or the price of miniatures have nothing to do with this. I am by no means a wealthy person, but found that if the product is worth it, I would find ways to raise the money. The product is the GAME (the ruleset and its clarity, the balance, the support in the form of FAQs and erratas, tournament circuits and leagues), not the miniatures. And it is no longer worth it.

For the dwarfs, there was only this. Hammerson met Grombrindal’s gaze, and the White Dwarf nodded slowly. If it must be done, let it be done well. Whether they were dead or alive, that was the only way dwarfs knew how to do anything.
And Grombrindal said "10 from the back, yeah?"

You know? the silver lining may be that this new world may be detached enough from the previous one that I might be able to restart my elven army without wanting half the pantheon dead and all the leaders nailed to a tree.
On the other side, from the rumours it seems the game might focus even more on characters, which is exactly the direction I would hate.

I don't think this is going to be an actual skirmish game. From the sounds of it there will be a new rule along the lines of "formations" where certain units can adopt a skirmish or ranked style. Thus the pictures of entire armies in skirmish formations are messing with the 40k rumormonger's heads.
We could also see skirmish come back to the old 7th edition format where it was a blob rather than a unit in loose formation.

Yes, but it is what sells. It's why I miss when we could have warhammer and warmaster. The small scale is better for big armies and unit driven combat anyway (unless you have a massive table). On the other side, from the rumours it seems the game might focus even more on characters, which is exactly the direction I would hate.
Back in the day every unit could choose between skrimsh, ranked, and tightly ranked (I may not be using the exact name on those last two. It's be a LONG time). Each formation type had advantages and disadvantages. I can't remember exactly when it went away. I think with the start of 4th maybe? From the sounds of it there will be a new rule along the lines of "formations" where certain units can adopt a skirmish or ranked style.

The independent tournament scene for lotr is actually growing and thriving in the UK and Europe. Check out the gbhl youtube channel if you're interested.

And even with Magic:The Gathering, it is also connected to classic fantasy and fairy tales, when I got into it in the 90's I didn't even pay attention to its multi-planar element, it was different for me and the point of the fantastical cornucopia approach is that it allows players to make it their own. Frankly, the background isn't that great without all these tie-ins anyway, and all that is left is grimdarking, like so much these days.

Not to mention the other links to pop culture, some of the classics, and history that both early warhammer and early Magic had.
Bloodbath at Orcs Drift
The Tragedy of MacDeath
among many others
Later we had the Last Chancers in 40k, which was just an obvious Dirty Dozen rip off. It's also the only 40k "army" that I still have (never read the BL book that went with them, and it's a good thing or I probably never would have bought them).

Kings of War looks really good, much much better than I thought it would be. Game mechanics are simple but functional, and encourages regimental play akin to Total War games, with monsters/magic taking a support role. Minis are crazy cheap and are the same base size as GW minis (can use GW minis). Rules and Army Lists are free online. http://www.manticgames.com/free-rules.html
A small demo game at half the normally pointed tournament sizes: Probably more ranked units than you'd see in most competitive WHFB armies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Mkm9Wzf-MA

I read the free core rules last night and was totally intrigued by their simplicity. The fact that they encourage any range of models is awesome as well. I believe the second edition is coming out this summer so I will be able to see what happens with ninth and gauge the latest Kings of War around the same time. At the very least I'll have an alternative to play if 9th is completely crazy!Lord Anathir wrote:Kings of War looks really good, much much better than I thought it would be. Yeah, I have read this before and i also got the impression that it is a hoax, it also does not fit in with the other rumours we have heard.
Re: Expectations to a 9th ed - new rumours from Warseer adde
It was around since before 40k 7th edition. We even discussed it here in the spring 2014 and the consensus was it is a hoax. Someone with better knowledge of current edition of 40k should be able to evaluate this quite quickly. But I also think it doesn't sound plausible.

I still don't get why the hell GW has destroyed the entire sense of fantasy in a couple of months. There was a clear logic behind fantasy history.
Then ET came, destroying the classical "epic" logic of the game: to make a comparison, they put a GRRMartin finale into a JRRTolkien book (I love and read both of them, but i would never mix them like i would never pour my beer on my pizza). PGs died, faction that hated each other until the day before got allied and so on...
But I simply decided to ignore ET, because i was sure that 9th was coming, and things may got fixed by that time. With theese rumours the earth cracked under my feet. Maybe I could have accepted a "Bubblehammer" background (just ignoring it like i did with ET, and playing with 9th rules in the old background), but not the squatted models, the 6 factions, the skirmish-like gameplay, the models getting sold in limited editions and the rules sold separately. Everything seems tought just to sell sell and sell again with no respect for old gamers.
I know theese are just rumours as always, and most of this may be uncorrect, incomplete, or just a hoax, but i am very disappointed and afraid for the future of my hobby.
Let's be positive though, many things still have to come and don't worry too much before things get sure

Neither do I.gruccione wrote:I still don't get why the hell GW has destroyed the entire sense of fantasy in a couple of months.
I don't mind the End Times, as things needed freshening up.
However, freshening things up isn't the same as nuking the entire gameworld into Bubbles

Saw this from Harry over at Warseer. Thought I'd share here:
So ...what if what we are talking about here is NOT 9th edition.
What if this is a different game .... a skirmish game like Mordheim? (Except firmly set in a post End times apocalyptic warhammer World) .... (A boxed game followed up by a number of releases to add additional factions).
What if 8th edition carries on unchanged as the mass fantasy combat system?
What if one thing has nothing to do with the other???

It could be a pretty cool set up though. I'd love to have a great set of skirmish rules for my elves and then have the option of scaling to mass combat. Time will tell, but that could be a big win.Nyeave wrote:Yeah thats what I have been hoping for since the beginning of the end times. Don't really know what to think now though
