Part 25

As they drew nearer to the mists, the mood on the ship had turned grim and determined over the spectacle that was unfolding in the distance. What had been one ship, which was now identified as elven; was now engaged with two human galleys that had followed it out of the mists.

Ada stood in silence on the forecastle of the 'SilverMist' alongside a score of elven archers, all sharing the same silence, a silence of anger.  She continued to wonder why the elven ship had not been able to out run the much slower galleys, unless... it was taking on water.

The first rake of the black powder cannons hit the elven ship with devastating force and thundered the sky with a staccato of booms. She had to do something, and quickly, they were not far now... maybe four  hundred yards and the second human galley was turning hard to intercept their course.

"We should not be diverting from our mission... but this cannot stand." Velnos cursed and interrupted her thoughts, as he seemed to have appeared out of thin air and had grey swirls of energy coiling around him, which soon dispersed.

His dark hooded cloak flowed in the gusts of wind and so did his long black hair, which he would constantly maintain from blocking his vision.
Velnos carried two longswords on his hips, a quiver of menacing black fetched arrows and a beautifully carved bow that was made out of some dark jade wood. Even his armor was blackened and made it hard to see the many daggers that adorned his light scale armor.

Calehir had snuck up on her left and stood beside her in his full dark red plate armor and golden scales, as if he were going to war again.
The tall golden wings on the side of the red helm gave off an enormous illusion of height and made the prince look like some magical hawk; ready to strike its prey. His dark blue cloak flowed In the wind with his long matching robes, as he turned his head and said.

"Are you ready? These pirates do not seem to be normal norse raiders, those ships are a class from the human empires navy... are they not?"

Ada nodded in response as she realized he was right, the ships weren't the largest, more built for speed, yet were very well equipped. Most likely stolen or defectors, and something had to be done. They were closing in at an enormous speed for a ship, with the help of that elven mage Zen'istor, Though each second counted... are the ships in range? She thought to herself and scanned the engagement.

" I can do it." She said abruptly, which startled Velnos and Calehir. Though she continued on and braced one foot on the railing and gripped her extended right arm at the wrist.

"You can use that at this range?" Calehir questioned and came up beside her, to which she nodded and continued to aim her hand at the second ship which was still engaged.

"Well actually ... I have never tried it at this distance." Ada said with a small smirk, as her eyes met his and he returned her a nod of approval.

Good she thought, he has faith... I think. Oh just concentrate! Like father used to say... clear your mind and narrow your will... concentrate.

Her right hand began to glow a bright white as it gathered energy, but that would not be enough. No, more and further... stronger... concentrate.
Ada's full arm began to glow through her dark coat, which was then followed by her left arm that was bracing it. The energy was hot and she felt it in her eyes, not far now, maybe three hundred yards. Her arms began to shake and a sharp pain began to rise as the magic coursed through her... now! She shouted in her mind though it came out in a grunted curse, as she unleashed the energy all at once.

The massive beam erupted from her hand and streaked across the sea in a blinding light and with a force that disrupted the water below. It narrowly missed the stern of the passing elven ship and connected with the front of the human galley, as it circled its target and prepared another round of cannon fire.

The blast of energy blew through the forecastle of the ship in a spectacular explosion of wooden splinters, burning canvas and flying sailors. The beam continued on for a brief moment before dissipating and allowed Ada to regain her footing.

She smiled and took a deep breath, as she admired the damage done. The ship was now making a dive to the bottom of the sea, as its full prow was completely missing and taking on massive amounts of water.

Ada turned and sat facing Calehir and Velnos, along with the entire archer regiment that was now in confused awe. To which one spoke out and said,"isn't she human?"

She was too tired to pay the remark any attention and was startled to see Calehir also completely ignoring it and placing his hand on her shoulder.

"Are you alright?" He asked with a concerned look and a small smile upon his lips.

"She can use holy magic at that kind of unity? And with such force and control?" Velnos questioned as he held his arms out in an open gesture to match his confusion.

" I have many questions for you half elf, but for now it seems you have put fear in our prey which has caused them to turn tail and run, some humans have no bounds to how low they will dishonor themselves." He continued with a glare over her shoulder, then turned his attention to her with a smile and said.
"Some humans... now come Sontas, link  us all, archers follow his lead; you are now part of the boarding party! Soretu I expect reinforcements in a timely fashion... not that we will need them." Velnos shouted and ended in a odd laughter as Ada found herself linked with everyone nearby with hands upon their shoulders.

" We are close enough now, prepare for combat!" Was the last thing she heard before dark grey swirls enveloped the group and drowned her vision for a brief moment of absolute darkness.

Ada's vision returned to a flurry of elven weapons being drawn and arrows being loosed onto the human pirates on the main deck. She was standing on the bridge of the human galley and it was not long before they were fighting down the stairs towards the midship.

Her footing was uncertain as Ada's body felt exhausted and her arms heavy, a sharp tug on her right arm pulled her aside with a quick jerk. To which an arrow thudded into the railing beside her, and where she had just been standing. She looked up at her rescuer to which was rather startling, the white haired brother stood stern with a harsh look in his eyes and his gleaming white sword, held easily with one hand.

" I get older and  damned softer." Sontas cursed and spat on the deck, as he strode towards the growing carnage on the main deck.

Soretu's 'SilverMist' was now making passes on the human galley with deadly archery and bolts from the three bolt throwers that made up the starboard battery.
Countless human pirates were coming up from below decks and were fighting to the bitter end, yet to no avail compared to the skill that was before them. Velnos was a teleporting dance of death and smoke, as he would sporadically disappear and reappear behind or beside the slow human warriors; and dispatch them with killing strikes from his dual long swords. Not to mention Calehir and Sontas who seemed untouchable with their massive great swords cleaving their way to the bow of the ship.
Even the armored archers had drawn their blades and supported their leaders with experienced skirmish combat, and supported each others strikes with multiple targets.

Ada had been taught about it, seen it at the siege of copher and even now, once again it was amazing to watch. Elven combat was truly graceful and deadly efficient.
A burst of cannon fire erupted from the gun deck below and sent splinters through the air as explosive cannon balls hit the hull of the SilverMist. It left a few holes that would surely bring some casualties, and it made her sick thinking about it.
Ada watched Calehir and the agents disappear below deck with a score of warriors, the main deck had been taken, and the slow elven ship that they had saved, was also approaching.

It was much smaller then the eagleship 'SilverMist', though still large enough for combat and seemed to have been armed accordingly.

Adalinusi continued to sit on the rail as her strength was still weak and her head nauseous, fathers warnings had come to mind but the cause was too great. That ship would have been decimated in the time they could finish  with the first raider ship.
Though her magic helped surpass her human limitations, her energy regeneration was still much weaker even with her elven blood; and as such she had to be careful.

She tried to stand as she noticed the cannon fire had not returned, and could  see the SilverMist approaching for a boarding action, the ship was theirs.

* * *

Calehir strode up the stair case with a concerned speed, as he had noticed Ada's exertion was still affecting her to the point where she had to stay near the railing to support herself.

Both the 'SilverMist' and the unknown elven ship to which he identified as a hawk class, were tied off to the human galley and preparing boarding planks.
He smirked as he observed the pirate captain with a black fletched arrow through his skull that could have only come from a Nagarathi noble, Velnos.

With a light hop, Calehir bound up the stair case to the bridge of the ship and to where Ada stood and gazed upon the commotion on deck.

"I don't think I will ever get tired of watching you all in combat." She said as he came up beside her and held her close.

" I was not sure how much that energy would affect you, that fool Velnos should have left you aboard the 'SilverMist'...and I should have stopped him." Calehir answered with a small burst of anger, as Ada lifted her head and replied.

"Its ok, I should have said something... Sontas pulled me aside and kept an arrow from piercing my chest, can you believe that?"

Calehir felt his eyes grow and was rather shocked and not to mention speechless.

"Captain Soretu Deflar, that cannot be you!" Came a shout from the main deck and caught both of their attention.

An elf in a dark silver scale armor with an odd blue hue and white robes, strode off the boarding plank from the unknown ship and towards the captain who now had his hawk upon his shoulder and happened to be striding off his own boarding plank.

"Toleran Finlais, officer of the crown, what brings you here amongst the mists and shadows I wonder?" Soretu replied as they both met below where Calehir was standing on the bridge.

"Why you of course!" He said with a sly smirk and turned his head and looked up at Calehir. " And you." He continued with a cold stare.

Yet before Calehir could find a response, the two brothers came up from below deck and caught the attention of Toleran.

"Why of course... agents of the White Tower or should I say Ceisil Draconis or has she taken her maiden name of Fei'kin after the death of Calehir's father? I can never keep up with all these changes... or can I?" The officer said with an arrogant tone and continued.

" The crown is also investigating the matters with the Royal Company, as the king wants his own answers. "

Answers? Calehir thought as his mind raced about his mother, to which brought more questions.

"What do you mean investigating?" Calehir began before Toleran burst into laughter.

"Does he even know that you are cousins Velnos? And I suppose that has nothing to do with why he is here, nor why there is no record of you being sent to Copher? All of this is rather interesting I must say... Nor would it have anything to do with prince Toran's escape while en route for transport to the White Tower?" Toleran said, as the rampage of information was hitting Calehir as if it were a marble wall.

"We still have much to talk about..." Velnos tried to answer, yet was once again interrupted by the aggressive agent of the crown.

"The White Tower has many arms with hands that have many fingers, I am not sure what is going on with the hierarchy nor is it my mandate to be,  I am here to bring you in for questioning Calehir. Though I am not blind to what has just transpired nor am I ungrateful, and its very unlikely i will be able to take you from your two companions here... as family... is everything is it not?"

With that the officer of the king turned and signaled to the waiting captain and his ship, who happened to be trying to show his gratitude at a distance; to make way. Though he stopped aboard the plank and said with a final note.

"My ship needs repairs, and it seems I have just missed what I was looking for... do not think I will discontinue my mission."

Toleran left no time for a response and continued onto the ship, as the crew began to remove the grappels from the galley; and left Calehir with the others in a dead and awkward silence.

It can, but this one family seems to be an extreme case. At this rate we will soon learn that Adalinusi is in fact Calehir's lost younger sister. (I hope not!)

Part 26

Norein found herself admiring the officers quarters, which was richly adorned with long tapestries on its walls and beautifully crafted chairs, that surrounded a long rectangular table at the center of the room. The dark grains in the wood matched that of the surrounding ship... and the dragon-ship class was made out of the rare Starwood trees, that grew to immense sizes and only in certain sacred areas on the holy island of Ulthuan.

Expensive, is all that came to mind, as Norein continued to gaze about the room and tried to pay attention to every detail. It had become a small habit to keep her mind off of what was going on, since it had been three days of sailing by her count; as she watched the passing sun and moon from the small window near the staircase.

When she felt the need to stretch her legs, she would gain a view of the massive barge carrying Teraskonarr. The dragon had not moved and was surrounded by a clear energy field that glowed with a yellow hue.
Though she doubted it could stop the dragon from tearing the ship apart... most likely something to slow him down, but why? Neither of them were hostile, what did they want?

Noreins' wrists were becoming raw from the steel manacles that were bound by a small chain, and it was becoming rather irritable to move. Though her armor did require the odd adjustment, as the wall of the ship was not made for comfort.
Her eyes caught those of Dethadrins' for yet another time, as they tried to silently communicate from across the room. Though it was rather difficult and for the sake of sanity, they had resorted to casual conversation in front of their silent watchers.

There was something odd about the elves that watched them, they seemed to have no doubt about what was happening, no second thoughts for imprisoning their fellow kin. Two armored elves with spears and a mage, had been tasked with watching them, and Norein had shouted and pleaded for answers, to no effect, just awkward silence; or the odd comical remarks and curses from Dethadrin.

Her attention turned back to the white cloaked mage who had been deemed a far greater threat and had his hands chained behind his back. Which also kept him in a odd position against the far wall with his head tilted to the left and resting in the corner.

"Perhaps we should have stayed in Copher." Dethadrin said with a light chuckle from across the room.

"Things happen for a reason my arcane companion, yesss yes they do." She immediately recognized the voice, not to mention the irritating yes.

"He wishes to see you Norein, grab her." Anoras commanded to the two carrying spears.

"How joyful, I will just continue to experience this wonderful hospitality here." Dethadrin added with a snarl.

"Oh be calm, your magic will not work here, my friend  is maintaining the enchantments." The short elf answered with a point to the mage that had been watching them.
Norein was gripped by both arms and hauled to her feet, which followed by being pushed towards the spiral stairs. Though not up like she had anticipated, but down and one floor below the hall way that led to the main deck. Norein was stopped in front of a door that was quickly opened by her escort, and with a light push, she was confronted by another richly furnished room.

The door shut behind her with a light thud, though her gaze was transfixed on the room itself. Many similar tapestries of war and mighty Asur fortresses, were depicted along the walls. While a large bed with dark silks and cornered by massive pillars that molded with the ship itself; sat in the far corner. Next, towards the center,  came a desk full of parchments, maps, a basket of fruit and anything else a commander would need, even navigation equipment.
Behind the large desk, that resembled more of a table, sat the mysterious commodore of the fleet.
He no longer wore his intricate armor, but had chosen a long black robe with white inscriptions along its edges. His long black hair was loose about his shoulders and his ice colored eyes glared in her direction, though to what purpose she could not fathom.

"It is true, your beauty does outshine your hardships, even in war or captivity. Please, sit you must be hungry." The commodore spoke in a soothing tone... almost too much so. Though the plate of food he pushed from behind the fruit bowl, was enticing. So she sat, yet studied the food wearily, some sort of fish with exotic green vegetables that she did not recognize.

"So I am your captive then, though over what crimes?"

Norein wanted answers, and now  was  happy to be having an actual conversation that could hopefully provide them.

"On this table, are copies of letters, shipment manifests, and reports over the search of prince Toran Sen'thanoc's personal residence. They found evidence of ritual sacrifice, animal mutilations, kidnapping and torture, letters from you Norein... and many others in the Royal Company."

Her heart stopped with his final words, and the weight of the world seemed to be on her shoulders. What letters? Had she been blind to his treachery all those years? Though something did change when he had returned from a trip south... Wait where did the letters come from? Impossible!

"I wrote no such letters, nor was I aware of ... " Norein began, though the lord interrupted.

"You would have to be rather naive to not realize something was wrong... you were in his command, received training and schooling since you were very young... almost five hundred years now, no? You must be rather remarkable to have survived so long in the outer kingdoms, all the warfare..."  He finished with a tilt of his head and a small smile that just did not sit well with her.

Before she could reply, he stood and stooped into a low bow.

"Forgive my manners, I am Sefian 'Asil Brakist, merchant prince of Lothern and its southern districts."

Noreins' stomach began to turn as the name sang and echoed in her ears, Brakist... there was a Brakist in Copher! Her eyes narrowed and Sefian returned a smile.

"I have also heard that love could make you blind to such dark things about someone, though just rumors..."

Her mood changed once again, with dread. It was true, she had loved him once, though to call it love... well she was not sure what it was. That part of her life seemed cursed with sorrow and misleading paths. Fornas Satuin's death in Copher, had hit her much harder then she had expected and it seemed like anyone that she got close to, became blessed with misfortune.

Prince Toran? A worshipper of the dark gods of chaos? Impossible! She said to herself as she pondered and looked over some of the parchments infront of her, the manacles still making a light clang from her agressive nature.

"The evidence has been turned over to the Phoenix throne and the White Tower,  nothing can save you now. You all will be executed as cultists, but you, well you I can maybe save. Join me Norein, you loved me once."

His final words seemed to hit harder then the spear from three days past, love? Was he mad?

"Oh isn't it obvious? Here I will show you." He continued and brought his hand up and past his face, as if he were taking off a mask. Though what occurred was far more complex, ripples came across Sefian's face and along his scar. His long black hair changed to golden waves and his scar healed. His jaw narrowed and his eyes turned to a light hazel, it was Toran!

"What.. how?" Norein stammered and rose from the chair, stumbling over it as she tried to distance herself.

"There is much for you to learn Norein, just know that my eyes are open and my powers have grown." Prince Toran said in his familiar soft voice and rose from his chair.

"Sefian Brakist was a foolish partner who thought he could cross me, so I took his life... in every manner of its meaning." He said with a sharp smile and placed his hands on the table. "You must help me Norein, I am speaking to you now, to your inner core. You see, Sefian Brakist and Prince Ithenias were keepers of an amulet, broken in two long ago during the imperial occupation and rebuilding of Copher. The two prince's were in disagreement with how to use it and blood was shed before a stalemate. He tried hiding this from me and though it is broken, its power is rather special. You will help me make it whole again and the strength of Ulthuan will rival the days before the Sundering!"

His speech felt somehow inspiring as she watched his features change back to those of Sefian. This is madness she said to herself, though something inside her began to speek with an ever so soft voice, to which she found herself say." I will join you."

I am looking forward to it. The question is, can this be Toran, it doesn't seem so likely... And I feel sorry for poor Dethadrin. Reminds me of my daily travelling in overcrowded trains.

Sorry for the wait! Had a wedding and b days and work and family keeping me busy the last couple of weeks, but here is part 27, finally lol.

The silence had lingered as they watched the elven ship sail towards the mists in the distance; that is until they were interrupted by the opening of a door leading to the rooms in the forecastle of the SilverMist.
A man in the dark robes that she had seen in Copher, came sprawling out  and fell onto his hands and knees.
He was bald, though his beard was a shimmering white with matching eyebrows shaped in angry arcs... and he was human.

He rose swiftly and shouted in the elven tongue. "Come quickly , help!"

Ada was feeling a bit stronger and stopped hanging onto the rail, as she noticed Calehir was already moving for the stairs. She could see red blood dripping off the humans brow and the look on his face seemed distraught with fear.

She took a step down the stairs and stopped, as if hit by an invisible force, in which her hand instinctively gripped the rail once again. Such darkness, she said to herself as her eyes followed the stairs and met with those of Sontas, who was staring at her with a look of concern and examination.
His brother Velnos, was in a full sprint across the boarding plank, which caught her attention though only for a brief moment, as he soon vanished amongst the grey smoke that swirled around him.

Sontas stood and waited for her at the bottom of the staircase, watching her with cold blue eyes.

"You can feel its power, I can see it in your eyes." He said as she reached the bottom, which froze her in place.

Ada hesitated briefly before asking the tormenting question. "What is it?"

"Come, I fear the worst has happened and we may be extremely lucky to have found you." Sontas said in what she could only presume was fear, as his emotions seemed to rarely change.

She followed him and Calehir across the boarding plank from the human galley, and onto the ship where captain Soretu continued to shout commands from the bridge.

They descended a small and steep set of stairs and through a door that revealed a wide room with a low ceiling. The  hanging lanterns  played tricks with shadows that changed with the roll of the ship, though two splintered holes allowed natural light into the room, and had clearly come from the cannons. Wooden shards laid about the room or had acted like small spears, which had dug into the wood panels on the opposite side; the shards  had also found a victim.

Ada slowly approached the center of the room where Calehir stood beside Sontas and the human in his black robes, Velnos was on one knee and had his right hand upon the shoulder of someone laying on the floor.
She came up beside Calehir and noticed it was a woman, her light brown curls were worn with age and streaks of white, while her face had sharp curves though creased and wrinkled.
The woman had to have seen over fifty summers she thought, and also brought her own age to mind as she lightly brushed her dark black hair away from her eyes. Calehir had yet to actually ask her age though she was sure he had an idea, Ada still resembled her youth from over thirty summer seasons; which she knew was a blessing from her Elven blood.

Her gaze caught the end of what had to be a piece of wood from the ship, which had taken this woman's life and protruded from the center of her chest.

" Khaine be damned, we should not have engaged... I." Velnos cursed in a flare of anger and slammed his fist on the wooden deck.

"Brother" Sontas replied with a nod in Ada's direction.

Velnos quickly stood and said," yes... you can feel it, can you not?"

Yet before Ada could answer, Calehir took a step in front of her and stopped Velnos in his tracks.

"Who is this woman, and why are we transporting her." Calehir questioned as both brothers stared in her direction, though the human's gaze had not turned from the woman; most likely her protector Ada thought to herself.

" She was a guardian, and her name was Silene... I guess I shall start with the beginning then." Velnos replied and stood holding a small and simple gold chain with a crescent shaped amulet attached. Though half the amulet was serrated as if a piece were missing, which would complete the circle.

"The Fei'Kin family has always been a part of the secret war against cultists throughout Ulthuan, and as such reports came to your mother frequently. Shortly after her marriage to your father, a report with details of a mighty human army, came to your mother. The army gathered in the eastern deserts of Araby at an impossible rate, and seemed to be gathering more; both signs of a darker influence in the region. An agreement was made between Sefian Brakist and Ceicil Fei'kin, to privately fund an army to deal with the new threat and establish dominance in the region,  prince Ithenias volunteered to lead it. "

"Why privately? If this was so important why keep the details a secret?" Ada asked and interrupted Velnos before the story went any further.

"Our empire left the old world long ago, and going back carried little support with the high princes, nor would believing the human army could become a threat. It was a dark time after the siege of Anlec, which  routed our dark kin from our lands. Though it came  with heavy losses and the choosing of a new Phoenix king." Velnos replied and nodded to his brother to continue.

"The moment was right, as the old prince's were more concerned with the choosing of the new king, and a young prince with little renown would be perfect to lead the private army. It had to be done, and prince Ithenias turned out to be far more skilled then anticipated. The destruction of the human army was more of a massacre and the rebuilding of Copher spread glory throughout Ulthuan and turned Ithenias into a distant legend of old. The attack was told as an act of power to show the world the Ever Empire was not gone. What they found afterwards also made the secrecy completely necessary." Sontas paused once again and joined his brother in staring at the dangling amulet for a brief moment.

"This amulet was a complete circle when Ithenias took it from the human king, and a search through the deep dungeons of Copher, would explain everything.  Starving humans were found, tortured and beaten in the ways of our dark kin. Many had perished, though a handful survived and were questioned. It turned out that the amulet granted power over the mind, able to bind thousands to the bearers will in a very short time. Though these particular humans in the dungeons were different, imprisoned for their denial to the king. It seems some were born with an immunity to its power, and can feel its dark presence. These humans are extremely difficult to find and Silene was our last... until now." Velnos finished, as everyone's gaze seemed to be locked on her, even the human was now looking at her and Ada felt her heart racing.

"I... how was the amulet broken?" Ada asked quickly in an attempt to change the focus of the conversation.

"Sefian Brakist turned out to be far more ambitious then any could have imagined  and looked to take the Phoenix Throne. He believes the power can be used on our dark kin, thankfully Ithenias stood his ground and kept the plans from taking place. Blood was shed when Sefian confronted Ithenias for the amulet and was forced to withdraw, though not before the amulet split in half, almost as if it had done so by its own free will. And so began the war between the Fei'kins and the Brakist's." Velnos answered and turned his attention towards Calehir, who had a dark look on his face.

"Why am I being hunted by agents of the king." Calehir asked in the lingering silence.

"Calehir come take a walk with me, there are a few things we should speak of" Velnos said quietly and handed Ada the amulet. "Keep this close to you,  for it will surely corrupt our minds if we hold it too long." He continued and moved towards the door with Calehir behind him.

As the door closed, the white bearded human dropped to one knee and said. " I am Tywin Talos, sworn protector of the guardians and service to the Ever Empire; I will guard you with my life"

Ada stood with a blank stare, as her head seemed to spin with nauseous questions. Though Sontas saved her the awkward response in his usual manner, and started with him spitting on the floor. " As if you could match Calehir in any manner, now get up and do some actual service. Go to captain Soretu and prepare for a quiet burial tonight, the sea will be peaceful for Silene."

A light chuckle was too hard for Ada to suppress as Tywin left the room and Sontas looked at her with his stern glare.

" You are getting soft." Ada managed in a lighter tone, which was followed by a small smirk from Sontas, as he turned and stared out to sea through one of the holes in the wall.

"This is no light task we have forced on you, it is extremely difficult for us to find guardians. Our resources are limited and a corruption within the elven courts would be disastrous. Sefian Brakist will hunt you forever,  or until I kill him. He believes he can re-unite our race by binding our dark kin to his will, and rebuild the empires glory. The world would burn under the Asur banners and we would become the very enemy we hated for so long. " Sontas said and turned back to her with a tear in his eye.

"My ancient Nagarathi  lineage was destroyed from a similar lust for power, and that plan is not the will of Asuryan. You are all that keeps the amulet's power at bay, even broken it will distort the mind of whoever wears it. The world cannot let this fall into the wrong hands. If a human of little strength can wield it with such power, I hate to think about what one of the Asur could do with it."

Ada gave a small nod of understanding, as Sontas kneeled beside Silene and covered her in a dark blanket.

Why me? Is all that came to mind , though as if someone else heard her question... a light voice said "Sometimes there is no answer."
Ada looked at Sontas who made no signs of hearing it and caused her to return her gaze to the amulet.

Great she thought to herself and put the amulet in her inner jacket pocket, I am hearing things now.

Part 28

"So what is it, you are all incapable of speech ? Not a damn independent thought between the lot of you." Dethadrin paused for a moment as he was rather exhausted from attempting to gain a rouse, or even a hint of emotion out of those standing watch.

"Daft is the word I am looking for, yes I think if we were to replace those spears with mugs of ale... you would have the intellectual capacity of dwarves and their habits as well!" Dethadrin began to laugh with his own joke, which also sent pain through his neck from the unbearable position against the wall.

As his laughter subsided, Dethadrin realized the two elves carrying spears were approaching him.

"Ah struck a nerve have I?" He chimed, as they hauled him up and forced him towards the spiral staircase and past the long dark wooden table that spanned the length of the room. To his right rested a large and beautiful tapestry depicting a war with their dreaded kin, the Druchii. The centerpiece of the picture was an Asur prince in magnificent armor, and surrounded by their dark cousins; Dethadrin smirked as this reminded him of Calehir on numerous occasions.

Soon Dethadrin found himself once again on the bridge of the ship, though he now had time to admire the remarkable craftsmanship that regarded every detail. The ship itself was a marvelous masterpiece built out of the largest starwood trees in Ulthuan, and with the strongest of magic.

A wince of pain with a forward step of his left leg, put a sour taste in his mouth as Dethadrin remembered being thrown down the stairs with his last visit to the bridge. Traitors in the Royal Company? Absolute insanity, there were enough threats to worry over... someone would burn for this, he thought to himself and continued to walk towards the stern portion of the bridge.
The clear glass panes revealed the deep blue sea below and the massive merchant barge carrying the great white dragon.
The sheer power of the dragon brought hope, though not much as Dethadrin recalled a conversation with Teraskonarr before they had left Copher.
Taking part in the political affairs of the Asur was not their place, and only a threat to Norein's safety would compel the dragon to act. Though Dethadrin had yet to see her for two full days and had become rather concerned.

He continued to walk the contour of the bridge in deep thought, while the glass windows provided him a clear view of the entire fleet of ships that sailed in an escort formation for the mighty dragon ship at the center.
Dethadrin was now observing the starboard side of the ship and realized some familiar colors on a small hawk class ship, which happened to be somehow docked with the massive dragonship with a full sail. Obviously some sailing tricks with magic he thought and watched a few figures cross over a massive plank that came from the flagship.

As they drew closer Dethadrin noticed the first was a beautiful maiden with long straight black hair and matching dark flowing robes. She was followed by an elf in silver and bronze plated armor with red robes that surely signified the Brakist house.
The third made Dethadrins stomach curl as he immediately recognized Gidras Brakist in his similar attire from Copher with dark red robes and silver armor. His dark brown hair scattered with the wind and seemed to radiate the same arrogance he had while undermining prince Althran in the courts. Though what truly did not sit well with the mage, was what followed the trio towards the entrance to the bridge down below. Four elves in full golden armor with dark blue robes, acted as an escort from the ship and were no doubt part of the Royal Company, or had been at one time.
Dethadrin was rather lost with the recent events and had never been so in the dark with what was happening around him.

"Ah my brother has finally arrived, it is about time." The voice was startlingly close and broke Dethadrin's thoughts.

He turned to see the familiar Commodore standing only a few paces away in his usual black silks and silver armor, his shoulder length black hair covered part of the scar on his face without his helmet.
Dethadrin felt a stern look cross his face as he stared into the tyrants ice blue eyes, yet he soon noticed that the commodore was not alone. Anoras happened to be standing behind the Brakist brother and so was Norein. Her white hair shimmered with the light that entered the bridge and she appeared unharmed. His heart began to race in excitement for a brief moment before the mage realized something was wrong.
Norein's beautiful silver eyes seemed dull and almost lifeless, while her white robes had been replaced with black silk; not to mention she also had her spear!

"Norein! What have you done to her!" Dethadrin shouted and tried to push his way through, yet soon found himself on his knees with a horrible headache from the butt of a spear.

Dethadrin watched a smile creep across the commodores face, as the elf turned and paced towards the rudder wheel.

"Norein has been one of my agents all along and played a key part in the fall of the Royal Company, how does it feel to be a cultist Dethadrin? You should be more careful with whom you befriend, Calehir's family has a long history of standing in my way."

"A cultist?" Is all that Dethadrin could say as he felt almost dumbstruck from the shocking news. Yet before he could ask any further questions, the new guests were coming up the stairs and silenced the room.

Gidras was the first to enter the room and immediately embraced his brother in his arms, as his house guardian paced to the stern windows and the dark haired maiden came and stood directly beside Dethadrin. The four elves in golden armor came and stood in a line at the entrance with a still silence.

"Sefian my brother, great work in capturing the notorious 'White Flame'... it is good to see you." Gidras said and broke the silence with a broad voice that irritated Dethadrin in every way possible.

"I should kill you here if that dangerous reputation proceeds you Dethadrin." Came another voice with a tight grip on his right arm, the mage turned and gazed into the bright blue eyes from the maiden beside him.

"Surely using warriors from the Royal Company to capture its own leaders is rather foolish wouldn't you say?" Dethadrin chimed back with a smile and continued, "I am no cultist this is nonsense."

"You are what the evidence proves and the tribunal will deal with you, those in the Royal Company will continue to serve the Phoenix Throne as you did once. We are lucky to have stopped you before the rituals could corrupt those around you. We know everything Dethadrin and soon your comrades will be in my grasp."

The maiden spoke in a cold and calculating manner which gave a small chill down his spine, yet he returned her a smile and said.

"Clearly you know nothing at all."

Her response was unanticipated as Dethadrin was pushed towards the golden sentinels with a ferocious strength, and his smile subsided as he passed Norein without acknowledgment.

"Take him to the brig, Lord Sefian Brakist we will fall in with your formation, your resources for this mission are greatly appreciated and will not go unrewarded."

The elves in golden armor acted without even a thought and brought him down the spiral staircase and to the long hallway that led to the main deck. A swordmaster awaited them in blackened armor and dark silk robes, the full face-helm only revealed two slots for the eyes and its long black plume fell to his shoulders. The massive ceremonial great-sword that the swordmasters were known to carry, was slung across his back and allowed a free hand to grip Dethadrins left arm, as the four sentinels made a formation around them and continued out onto the bridge.

They paced towards the long plank that connected the small hawk ship to the massive dragon ship, though they came to a brief halt to allow some supplies to be loaded across the plank by some of the crew. This also gave time for the swordmaster to tilt his head closer and say.

"Fear not, things are not all as they seem."

Poor Dethadrin had to be really desperate. Or desperately bored, or both. The two parts of the amulet are now close to each other, are they not? :)

Hmm I'm not one for advice but since you asked I guess I'd have to say have your end points for your characters set out or a general idea anyway. The paths they take to grow and progress the story is bound to change as you go which isn't a bad thing from my view. Just don't let it consume you and get carried away lol.

Part 28 -2

Norein had felt helpless for over a day now, and as she watched Dethadrin forced down the stairs; nothing had changed. Everything around her felt distant and numb, while every action her heart wanted came with little response. She had followed the Commodore as his personal guard and somehow had been kept from thrusting her spear through his chest.
Nothing made any sense and she was still confused on whether Sefian Brakist was Toran at all.

The dark haired agent followed her prisoner down the stairs shortly after and left Norein with the two Brakist brothers, Anoras and the quiet house guardian that had come with Gidras.
Though even in her present state she could feel the mists of deception in the air, they were all hiding something and all she could do was watch.

"Sefian, the death of prince Ithenias in Copher could not have come at a better time, your work with the evidence was masterful and the Royal Company is no more. This plan is truly coming together, I hope taking care of prince Toran was not so difficult?"

"Yes we found him shortly after his escape, Ceicil Fei'kin is losing her influence and the amulet will be mine."

Norein listened intently as the others seemed pre-occupied during the conversation of the two brothers.
What happened to Toran and did he tell her the truth that night in the Commodores chambers? If all this were true, surely it was not helping Ulthuan nor could it save their race.

"Toran could have been a valuable asset in the kings court, did we really need to ruin them all? Sefian, to discredit all three princes could raise some unwanted questions." Gidras said with an ever so subtle change in his voice that Norein recognized as fear.

And rightly so as Norein was rather shocked at the speed Sefians hand moved and placed a strong grip to the younger brothers throat.

"Never question your elder, little brother... Toran was clever and to leave one of the three would raise even more questions!" Sefian said without changing his stern yet soft voice and finally released his grip.

"Besides, this all will be behind us once we gain the second half of the amulet."

The Commodore paced towards the stairs and to where Norein stood, as Gidras gasped for air and began to cough.

" Norein I have a task for you, come walk with me."

She wanted to shout and swing her spear, yet nothing came not even a flinch from her fingers. Only an involuntary turn as her body followed her foul master like a puppet.

He spoke as they walked down the stair case and opened his cabin chamber door.

" You will fly with your dragon to the Citadel of Dusk, there you will meet Calehir and those with him, as that is their most likely destination. Tell them what has happened to Dethadrin and about Anoras's treachery, this will gain their trust and will allow you to await on my arrival. You will know what to do when the time is right."

On his final words he closed the door and left her standing there in horror, the mirrored plaque on the door had the Commodores ingravings and had been polished to a bright sheen. Norein could see herself with a tear in her eye  before her body turned back up the stairs and out onto the main deck.

* *

Curse you, Gidras thought to himself as the coughing strained his throat and ached where his brothers grip had been... what had come over him?
He rubbed his neck with both hands and noticed the little blue hooded mage staring in his direction.

"You would be wise to listen carefully to your elder brother Gidras yesss, it is foolish to cross him." And without another word, Anoras left them as well and made his way down the spiral stairs, leaving only a hand full of officers to maintain the bridge.

Ledras was now pacing towards him and his eyes began to glow with a light red hue, he stopped only a few paces away and spoke softly.

" Shall I remind you of our arrangement as well? Keep your tongue or it will be your head that rolls first."

The demon glow in his eyes subsided and relinquished the fear that was gripping Gidras from within, before Ledras spoke again.

" Though that would be what you all seem to call merciful compared to what your close friend is experiencing, perhaps you could join him as well... Come I will escort you to your chambers."

The smile that followed was almost unbearable as it masked the demon's possession with an unnatural twist.
