"Well done brother." Elenquenwë whispered.

Focusing his mind on the entrance he searched for some traces of power, but nothing made his nerves tingle and nothing was to be seen as he spied the cliffs upwards.

"There is nothing near the cave entrance."

Climbing the rock face would doubtlessly leave him unable to react to the spider should it choose to attack, but delays would benefit none at all. Alcarmor swung from his horse's saddle and began the ascent.

Elenquenwë began his climb next. He wouldn't be the last to climb with those bulbous eyes lurking among the trees. The thought made him shudder for a brief second.

Angloth whispered words of comfort to his steed. Hopefully should the giant spiders choose to return the beasts would be able to defend themselves.
He waited for Ainare to climb before he brought up the rear. Slinging his shield over his shoulder, he began the climb, though something felt wrong about it.

Alcarmor's feet scrabble for footholds as he heaves himself upward. Several times he slips and has to regain his purchase on the cliff. However it is only a short ways up and soon he reaches the top. One last time as he heaves himself onto the precipice he nearly falls but, righting himself, he gains entrance to the cave. Drawing Silorme he peers into the gloom. There is nothing immediately to be seen. The light of Ainare's staff will reveal more.

Below there are frustrated murmurs and the two light thuds as Elenquenwë and Angloth fail to scale the cliff. Alcarmor quickly lowers a length of his elven rope and helps draw the others up. Ainare's staff pierces the gloom. The cave entrance broadens at the back and then splits into two passages, both heavily webbed. The air reeks inside.

Ainare once again extinguishes the light from his staff, allowing the gloom to once more invade and reclaim what was once theirs. In its place, Ainare softly sings a song of power, whilst Ainare lacks the beautiful lyrics and honey-tipped tones of his brother, the song is nonetheless not lacking power, impact of beauty as is befitting the nature of an Elven song. At its conclusion the runes dancing across Ainare's sword once more burst to life, imbuing not only the ability to destroy the shadow, but banishing it from his presence. Light shone forth from the sword in the manner that his staff had done-so previously, but not without a cost, the repeated drawing upon his ability had drained Ainare slightly.

"I have prepared what I needed, I suggest you do the same kinsmen, we should not tarry any longer then is absolutely necessary. The longer this foul spawn is allowed to draw breath is an affront to me,"

His pride hurt more then his body, Angloth assailed the rope and this time more carefully climbed to the cave entrance. Unslinging his shield, he stepped between the gloom of the breach and the rest of the group. "I shall be a wall of steel should the cave grow fangs. Onwards, where salvation lies for one of our kin," with a whisper, "hopefully."

Alcarmor peered closely at the two tunnels, attempting to see any sign of the monstrous spider's passing, or hear any noise which might indicate where the fiend or its captive were hidden. He remained tense and wary, and Silorme was unsheathed in his hand.

There is no sound from either passage, and the passages are too heavily webbed to tell it has gone either way. It is light footed in its own lair.

As they wait, indecisive, the spider's creaking laugh sounds in the darkness. "Come in, my pretties, don't stand there forever. Or are you too crippled by your fear?" it hisses. The sound seems like it comes from the right hand passage.

The spider's mocking laugh breaks the silence again and then all is quiet once more except for the sound of the Noldor's own quiet breathing. The cave entrance is still dark and no sound approaches either. The spider's brood are reluctant to attack. Or maybe they too are afraid to enter its evil lair.

OOC: Yeah, that's an easy decision :P

"You dare speak of bravery, who hides like a witless worm in a hole?" Alcarmor shouted back. He began to head down the right hand tunnel immediately.

As Alcarmor slashed his way forward, Silorme cutting the webs easily, Elenquenwë followed closely, preparing Telpëlussë for the upcoming fight.

The passage remains relatively flat, sloping only slightly downward as it bends around a moderate right to left to right s-curve. The webs slow the passage but Silorme's bright edge hew through them determinedly as Alcarmor forges ahead.

The passages opens suddenly into a more or less round chamber. It is covered with slime and web covered refuse. There are several web covered mounds upon the floor and other loose garbage from the beast's prior victims. At the far end of the passage the tunnel appears to continue deeper into the lair. The air is thicker here, but not overwhelming. A draft of outside air still reaches to this chamber, providing some freshness.

Elenquenwë waited for his brothers magical light, before he started to scan the cave. Alerted to the spiders ability to climb and hide, he surveyed the ceiling. Nothing. Then he focused his mind on the web covered piles, but no living was imprisoned in this cave.

The creatures insult paused him for a moment, his head bowed. "Hmph, you have spent to much time skulking web spinner, your dare lacks bite." With a sigh he followed after the others as they followed after the head long pace of Alcarmor.
Once they entered the chamber, it was a site to make anyone blanch. The rot, decay and filth lay strewn everywhere. Shadows lay everywhere in the gloom of the things dining room.
A thought came to him. Though he was unsure if it would work, he sung. Softly and quietly as if only to himself. Words of the strength of mountains to resist, of the Pelori raised to guard against Morgoth and of Taniquetil from which Manwe sits and see's all of Middle-Earth.
Raising his sword, he pointed it towards the deeper lair. "Onwards it seems, though watch our back. I do not wish a spiders bite unseen." Taking on some of the bravado of Alcarmor, he strode on.

The passage bends away to the right from the back of the first chamber and continues to slope slightly down, not that it is noticeable, even with the light cast by Ainare's flickering blade. After a few minutes the passage splits. To the left it plunges into the gloom more steeply. The air down that passage is stale but less foul. To the right the same reek exists that permeates the whole cave, but this passage disappears around a sharp corner only a few meters ahead.

All his senses stood on edge as he moved as quietly as he could through the tunnel. "It will be far to soon that I shall come across another maze of tunnels," he thought to himself.
He could sense nothing, no deep brooding malice waited for them near. Carefully eyeing each passage, he noted the left did not smell so foul and the webs fluttered in the breeze old and abandoned. The right though, the stench of death still permeated the air and the webbing looked fresh and newly spun.
The path was clear, with a sign he motioned the others to follow him down the right passage.

The passage veers sharply ninety degrees around the right hand corner but Angloth's senses prove true and nothing lurks around it. The passage is sticky with the spawn's webs and every step is laborious The passage has a distinct bend to it, made evident by the light of Ainare's sword but no sign of the spider appears as, half a hundred paces later it opens into another broad, high ceilinged chamber. It is much like the first, strewn with refuse, reeking of blood and death. There are cocooned bodies on the floor of the chamber and hanging from the ceiling. Another tunnel leads out from the side of this room.

OOC: roll a Observe(Spot) test with TN13. Ainare's bane spell wears off.

Again his sense stood on edge waiting for some sign. Again he could feel no brooding malice or hatred nearby.
Looking around, he could see nothing but the same filth and squaller the creature seemed fond of living in.

Alcarmor swept his keen-eyed gaze about the room. One of the cocoons upon the floor looked recently disturbed, he noticed. Perhaps it contained the Noldo they sought to rescue? He sheathed Silorme and drew his belt knife, and began hacking at the thick webbing to reveal whatever it held.

Alcarmor pulls the strands of webbing back from the corpse's - for such it is - face. The face beneath is twisted in a rictus of pain and futile horror. The long dark locks of hair still visible around the distinctly elven face. It is indeed a Noldo. It isn't clear though how long this elf has been dead. It may well have been hours or days ago.

Alcarmor howled in frustration. "Show yourself, gutless craven coward! Murderer and deceiver, lier and filth-spawn! This outrage will be avenged! Show yourself, that justice may be done upon you!"

He drew Silorme again, coldly furious.

Angloth in turn came to look once Alcarmor yelled in outrage. Peering up constantly to keep an eye on trouble he bowed over the corpse. His face contorted in thought. "Calm yourself my lord, it, it may not be the prisoner we heard," though the conviction in his voice faltered.

"Perhaps you are right Angloth." Elenquenwë tried to preserve his hope.

"Well I feel we are close and no need to play hide and seek anymore. We should prepare for the worst."

Humming a fine traditional tune as a prologue for his tale, he changed pose to a more dramatical one. Lifting his hand above his head, his voice called out without fear, ringing clearly amongst webs, filth and death.

"Ungoliantë and Melkors deeds to drain Telperion and Laurelin in ages old will be revenged upon you this day. Their lights forever extinguished, it continues to live on in the crafts and spirits of the Noldor. No one can extinguish the flames within. Come face your doom!" So spake Elenquenwë through tales of old to renew his companions morale if need be.

The great spider's mocking laughter is even more distinct this time and clearly comes down the tunnel exiting the chamber.

"Come then," it creaks. "You will find me less craven up close, but I choose when I will meet the wrath of the Noldor." This last in a scornful tone. A shadow in the gloom flickers away. The beast was close but now draws away. As it scuttles off more mockery fades back to the group. "I will make you like your fallen kin."

The minstrel sensed the spider was moving away from them and then it's presence was gone from the cave.

Seeing how exhausted his brother looked and how draining magic could be, Elenquenwë neared him and soothed his tired spirit with words of encouragement.

The presence of his brother and kin alone was refreshing and allowed Ainare to draw strength from him, but that combined with his natural charisma and talents refreshed Ainare utterly.
"I sensed it too brother, the Spider flees the approaching tempest, we must press home our advantage, and utterly destroy this foul spawn of Ungoliant."
Attempting to refresh and coax the magic to return to his enchantment, the cob-webs, as if acting as an extension of the foul-will of their creator impeded his attempts, draining Ainare of his only too brief rejuvenation.

Signs of the spider's passage are more evident here, the creature has spun webs in its wake and this tunnel is stifling with the sticky mess and with its foul stench. It take several long and arduous minutes to fight through it all until the party once again comes to an intersection of tunnels. The passages continues straight ahead and also branches off to the right and left. The reeking odor is overwhelming in all directions.
