In my experience, this is one of those things you can either laugh or cry about
If you're crying about spambots, you're sort of doing it wrong.

Aside from the titles that Loremasters have (which we set for ourselves) and the ones that the Heralds get (which we set for them, though they can have it changed if they want), Ex-Lores and Ex-Heralds keep their titles after leaving. Tsanqar has one for his help designing and testing the code for the online campaigns, there's the Master Scrivener title (it used to be handed around a bit, though Elias has had it for quite some time now), and there's also a "Tactician" title (which a couple of people have, I think - it's handed out on occasion to people who are good at helping others with tactics for army usage). The 5000th member received a "5000th levy" title, though I don't know that he's around these days. Shandiar also possesses a title, and the "Pendragon" one is for Calarion's RPG. That's most of them. There are a few others, but they aren't in active usage for whatever reason.

And then, of course, there are the joke titles.

It was vivid enough for me that my mother had to wake me up to stop me from mumbling and twitching, believing I was having a nightmare." ~Giladis

"Think of the Loremasters as irresponsible parents. VictorK is the one you need to talk to if you want permission for something, I'm the evil parent that says 'no' and Eldacar is your grumpy grandfather who fought in some war and is scary and authoritative." ~Ruerl Khan

"And believe me, I like my websites like I like my boyfriends: wild, free, and unlikely to give me a virus." ~Sirist

Thank you for the overview. Seems like some good reasons to hand those out. On a similar note, I came across this place The Hall of Ancients. It looks like it hasn't been updated in a while. And no, in this instance, I'm not fishing for a place. I think there are many members who are much more qualified than me for a place.

Anyway, back on topic: from where I'm sitting it's been fairly quiet spambot wise the past week or so. Go loremasters (and heralds)!

No worries, none taken. Like I said, I definatly don't belong in there. I was just pointing out that no new addition has been made to it since 2006 it seems. There could be members around who do deserve it.

+3 for me today :)

The last one was best. Posted right above this topic. I thought it very fitting and it gave me a laugh. I thought I'd share it with you guys.

I was wondering, does the "notify me when this is dealt with" radio button do anything?

We used to do annual member awards (hence me being voted the best member as per my sig). One of these awards was a place in the hall, there are a few names that deserve to be there but aren't but the forums less community orientated than it used to be, so it's all kinda fubar now. Not that it's a bad thing but the website has just grown in a different direction..

You're right. I fear I may have been the last person to update that.

I'll leave it as an exercise for the longer running members to work out when they think that was.

In other news, the old library still has *so* much more stuff that never got transferred. I think the librarians may have got bored. Take their titles away! ;)

+12 more, for the Spambot Terminator (sounds less 'pro' spammy than Spaminator), or the Nagarythii Bot Stalker, or the Cothique Hunter(or Kraken/Leviathan) of Spambots.. All suitable.. to the eventual inclusion of Spam titles... [-o< Go on Eldacar, I know you want to.. :)

This time it was "wriguegrowl" for the reoccurring medical promblems we all have and some for the very popular female viagra that we can now buy online from mexico canada and uk.

Stupid bot posted in an Xmas, 10 year anniversary, Libarary, aswell as in its own topic and another one to which the name eludes me right now.. Some people just dont know how to program like they used to.

Anyway, what to the idea of assigning a member or members, to the task of hunting down these automated annoyances, to take some pressure off the ascended members that normally do it...?
Who normally gets rid of them anyway..? Is it just any/all of the Adminians, or do some others have the authority to dispose of them..?

EDIT: It's a pitty we don't have the same set up as the Night Walkers over on Carpe Noctem. That's a nice bit of customization/individuality there...
Sincerely,
Kitlith

I think I like Nagarythii Bot Stalker best ;) Although I am a bit hesitant about asking Eldacar for it. Who knows, he might actually grant us our wish and we end up with a title like "spam poodle" or something. He is after all said to be a bit grumpy... ;) (just look at Prince_Asuryan)

Is anyone actually keeping count though? I've had some last week and 4 again today. They were advertising an "asf converting tool", which sounds realy cool. Even though I have no clue as to what it would do.

Something I was wondering about, anyone know if the admins are subscribed to this forum and so get spammed by Ulthuan every time we post something here? That would be kind of ironic...

Back when I was a Lore (Why don't I have a Retired Lore admin rank?) I used to subscribe to Website Topics, as it was something I always wanted to monitor traffic on.

No way to tell if the current Lores do or don't sadly.

I don't keep track. The registration process does block a number of them (both from registering, and from actually activating the account), and still others are caught and eliminated before they actually do anything. I work on a scorched earth policy, so when I wipe one out it usually takes from half a dozen to over a hundred known spambot/adbot IP addresses and email accounts with it (even if they've never actually registered before at all).
Something I was wondering about, anyone know if the admins are subscribed to this forum and so get spammed by Ulthuan every time we post something here? That would be kind of ironic...
Even if it's only for a minute or less (it takes about that long to wipe out a bot), I check the site fairly regularly each day for new posts. I'm not actually subscribed, though, because I don't check my email enough to make it worthwhile.

Fair, I wasn't sure who was last to it.

Anarion, of various people, I am firmly of the opinion that you should probably have a place in that hall. I dunno if you have access to the Lore forum still, but if not, if you want to write up your own blurb (quite a long list of things you managed, I seem to recall) I'll submit it to the current crowd, see what they think. I still have a valid login (Sun's) to the system for editing the actual Hall, so I can actually put the page up fairly quickly.

Well, most of it was lies, but the bit "Burning Sun is a shadow account of Ricold" is, was, and will continue to be true. Sun is a "shadow" account of mine, and I ran it quite successfully for some years.

Various accounts that are all mine:
Ricold (archive)
Burning Sun (archive)
Jenenius (archive)
Ilithion (archive)

I'm fairly sure I have at least a few more shadow accounts over the years, but I'll be damned if even I can remember the usernames. I don't consider LOTT or Tourney to be "shadow" accounts, as I had my account name changed for those.

Lol. Don't fret too much Allerion. Ricold = Sun is the only big one that I know of. I think other lores have an extra account or two, a lot of them were used for testing my campaigns since I needed lots of users and wanted to limit actual people in the know. I am relatively sure that most of those were only used for that purpose.

And Ric, I am not bothered whether I am in the Hall or not. It is a relic of past years, just like the campaigns, and that's ok with me. I'm certainly not about to create my own entry for it.

the "Pendragon" one is for Calarion's RPG.
Out of curiosity do I qualify for this title? Been with Cal's RPG since the beginning. I think Luna has this one though I thought it was unrelated to the RPG, not that I think I deserve a titile anywhere near as much as a vet like Luna or all the vets and ex lores that are involved in OBSM.

cidracin: Why do you think I stuck that one up in the middle of the April Fools list? Sun generated a fair amount of (justified) scepticism when he first appeared, as he'd not been on the Warhammer scene before. The various Lores* all shrugged this off, and after a while, he settled in nicely. When we decided to do Shadow accounts for the April Fools joke, I thought it would be a bigger fool if I admitted the truth there, as no-one would believe it amongst a page of lies. Incidentally, the set up as presented in that thread is actually true. When I say part way down that the post by Ricold was actually made from Sun's account, it was. I didn't bother changing accounts.

*All the Loremasters (and possibly Heralds) at the time were aware of my duplicity and my request to keep the fact that I owned both accounts quiet.

Anarion: I'd create your entry for you, but I've been a few too many years out the loop to have even a chance of getting half your achievements right. About the only thing I recall clearly was turning you down for the old COL site because I didn't know you at all at the time. With hindsight, that was one of the bigger mistakes I made as you then got a job here and did a wonderful job.

Where's Calarion or Elias when I need them? About the only two people I know that are still around and have been for longer than I have.
